A Question for Viola Fans

By: Ted | April 29th, 2008

201561_hp.jpgI was speaking to my good friend recently and he asked me a question I had actually been thinking about for a few days:

If I had to choose only one, would I prefer that Fiorentina win the UEFA Cup, or qualify for the Champions League?

It’s an interesting question. Of course the Viola still have the chance to get both prizes, and as fans we don’t have to choose one or the other. It is really just a hypothetical, but it gets to the root of what we want most as fans.

On one hand, it makes a lot of sense to hope that Fiorentina gets the CL spot. It will probably be better for the club in the long run, in terms of making more money, and will certainly be a blast for fans of the team next year. Making the Champions League would also vastly improve the team’s chances of keeping this very likable and interesting group of players together. Frey and Mutu (for example) might be offered more money elsewhere, but the lure of playing in the Champions League will be strong. (This is true particularly in Frey’s case, since his main suitor will likely be Milan; if the Viola make the CL, that means Milan will not.) There are even rumors that Coach Prandelli might leave after the season (God forbid, and thankfully he has refuted them) but regardless he would surely stay if he had the chance to coach in the CL next year.

However, if I absolutely had to choose between the two, I would choose the UEFA Cup trophy. While qualification for the Champions League is wonderful, it is still fleeting, while a trophy lasts a lifetime. And there is no feeling quite like winning. I would like a trophy to commemorate what really has been a very special season on the banks of the Arno.

As I said, of course, we don’t have to choose. We can just root like hell for both. But what do you think? If you had to choose, would you take the trophy, or CL qualification?

I’ll be back tommorow with the Rangers preview.

You should win the UEFA Cup so the stinking Huns don’t win it!

    Forza Viola!

i hope that fiorentina make a breakthrough. they play with class everytime i’ve watched them this year. who knows…they pull a decent draw if they get the cl spot and maybe they make it through the group.

If it was my team, I’d be with you - I’d want the trophy, but practically speaking, the CL might be more important, depending on the team’s current finances, etc. Still, you’re right - trophies are forever.

this week is like arsenals week. it could go terrific, mediocre, or collapse. with the derby of milan this weekend, this is a great time for fiorentina to build a 5 point cushion.

I would take the UEFA Cup, if only for sentimental reasons. Who knows, it might just persuade Prandelli, Mutu and Frey to stay. Correspondingly, finishing 4th in Serie A does not guarantee a spot in the group stages of the Champions League (and if we exited in a qualifying round, some star players may depart before the August deadline). Call it a pessimistic attitude, but our lead over Milan is effectively just one point owing to their superior goal difference, and they have the luxury of fighting on just the one front. Hell, I even see a UEFA Cup victory being a more realistic outcome anyway! Nevertheless, we won at Cagliari last year, so fingers and everything else crossed we win the fight on two fronts!

Its a great question. I kind of have a soft spot for Fiorentina, so I’d like you boys to make the CL next season so I can talk about you a bit more! I think in terms of the long term stature of the club, it has to be the CL. Its always nice to pick up a trophy, but if someone doesn’t break the top 4 in Italy, there’s a bit of a worry that a ‘Big 4′ gap will devolop rather like the Prem, and no-one wants that.

I want to face Toni in the uefa Final…that would be an epic match. Regardless i think the Viola will keep the 4th spot in champions league and will win the Uefa cup…you just can’t pick one…being a Viola fan and what this club has been through, with being in the 4th division and climbing out way back, we deserve both!!!
With the CL, it will bring us a heck of alot of money to spend on excellent players and with the Uefa cup, it will bring the team joy and accomplishment, and giving all our young players confidence for the future!!

    Forza Viola!!

I like the idea of qualifying for the CL, but the money argument is an interesting one that doesn’t seem resolved. I suppose it is dependent upon how far along la Viola progress in the CL. If we don’t make it out of qualifying, it isn’t much of a payday, is it? And then how does that compare with an UEFA Cup trophy, combined with UEFA qualification again next year?
