Anybody see the Lyon offside liveblog? If you want the ultimate definition of irony, look at 4:27

Great post, but one correction. If you guys win the CL, they should nominate Frey for sainthood. S. Sebastiano, patron saint of Firenze!!! (it just may happen, think Porto in ‘04)

I’m so proud of this team. We still need more consistency in Serie A but I have loved every minute of it since this project began and the best is yet to come.

I just watched the game – man what a heart pounder. Good god. The fighting-for-our-lives defense at the end was typical for us, and we’re not that good at it. At times like that Jo-Jo is a big help because he can handle the rock in transition – a valuable skill. That said, the first 75-80 minutes I thought is was a good team defensive effort, Frey didn’t have to do anything. Obviously, he saved our bacon 3 or 4 times at the end. Hey, a win is a win is a win, and that’s all we needed, not a work of art. Now let’s spend that damn cash!!

One more thing about de Silvestri (yeah, I want to see him more too, a fast, young athlete running the field): he blocks more crosses than anyone on our team. Watch him next time, the opposing wingers struggle to get in front of him to swing balls in.

De Silvestri is looking like another Corvino steal. I was excited about him but his mix of athleticism and skill is already making a difference. Comotto has been respectable but he was never going to be a starting RB on a top tier team. We are basically a CB away from having a solid backline.

Tough indeed. But our ace left defender has been doing well, so I’m not worried.

Ted – I’ll second your nervousness after the loss to Lyon in the first CL match. Especially since we knew Gila wouldn’t be available for the Liverpool game. I thought we’d be in with a shout when it came time for the match at Anfield, but to have the qualification wrapped up before that is really tremendous. 4 consecutive wins in the CL is really a tremendous achievement.

I’m still basking in the glow. To read the comments of the players, you can tell they are very proud, and thrilled.

I have been singing the Fiore anthem – at work! People think I’m nuts (well, they already did anyway).

Kadainja – nice observation of the ‘Pool schedule! They will definitely field a B team for that match; to conserve energy and also to spite the Frenchies who did not get their back at the Franchi.

Question: Was anyone but me surprised that Vargas took that penalty? I guess I had never seen him take one, not with Mutu or Precious on the pitch. I guess Prands figured Vargas was the one with the most steel in his balls for that defining, knee-knocker moment. He bet on the right horse! The bulldog hit a good one, man. Even had the keeper guessed right he would not have stopped that.

Tomas – I figured it would either be him or RickyMonty (who if you remember from the penalty kick shootout against Everton in the UEFA Cup is a cool customer from the spot as well). But no argument from the result. For as many goals as Gila scores, he doesn’t appear to be anywhere near the top of the list on that, which is a little surprising.

Has anyone noticed we have scored the same amount of goals as Real Madrid thus far? We are (temporarily) in joint first place for goalscoring…12 goals, the best of the italians

Nah. We scored more than Real I think (temporarily). True, we are joint first place for goalscoring, but that’s with Arsenal.

Now if only we concede less.
