A Dialog Between a Father and Son

By: Ted | September 29th, 2009

SCENE: A 34-year-old man and his 15-month-old son sit together on a couch. The boy holds a stuffed duck named Mr. Quackers. They have both just witnessed their favorite football team, Fiorentina, dismantle another football team called Liverpool in a competition called the Champions League. Following the final whistle in the match, this is what they discussed…

FATHER: And that, my son, is what being a sports fan is all about. You’re very young, and you don’t understand all this, but you just witnessed a very big event. It’s not quite as big as some people say, of course. I have already heard one person say that it is the greatest win in the Viola’s history. Of course it is not. This team has won scudettos and cups, you know. There have been bigger matches. But we beat a very good team, with very good individual players, in a European competition. So it is very big.
Yes, I know what you are thinking. The media hype that surrounds these English teams is ridiculous. No team is as good as the English hype. Nor is any Italian team as bad as the Anglo-centric press says. But hype aside, Liverpool is good, and their captain Steven Gerrard is very good, and their wonderful striker Fernando Torres is very, very good. Great, perhaps. Although our central defender, Alessandro Gamberini, was even better today. As I said, today is a special day.

SON: [Pointing to his stuffed duck]: Duck!

FATHER: Indeed. But, as I was saying, this is what being a fan of sport is all about. Not all days are as good as this one. You have already sat through too many grim 1-0 losses to the Romas and the Samps. But that is what you must do to be a true fan. You cannot just appear for the wins. You must suffer through the losses, to truly savor the wins. And tonight is a time to savor. The entire team played magnificently. I have no complaints tonight. The defense held a very strong team. The midfield controlled the ball. We scored twice. The first half in particular was perhaps the best half I have ever seen my team play. It is a wonderful feeling.

SON: [Pointing at his father]: Daddy!

FATHER: Yes. I am your Dad, and I love you above all others. There is no one near you.
But I confess I have paternal feelings for that boy Steven Jovetic as well. He is only 14 years my junior, and I have only watched him since he signed with out favorite team, but I feel like we have watched him blossom from a boy with promise to a man who dominates football games. Never mind his goals, although he took them with the cool of an assassin. But note, instead, how he dominated the match from beginning to end, how he sprinted from the first minute to the last, and how he above all terrorized the experienced defense of Liverpool. I am proud of him, not just because I have backed him for so long, but because he has grown and transformed into something else. He is becoming a great player before our eyes.

SON: [Incoherently]: bababababababab

FATHER: Of course I will not overlook the other members of the squad. They played as a team today, and I am proud of all of them. Our defense kept them out. Zanetti played like the wily old lion that he is. Mutu ran and ran and ran. I have criticized Marchionni and Montolivo in the past, but they were part of the team tonight. I have nothing bad to say of them.
And the coaching. You know my thoughts on the Great Man. However he prepared them in the first half, it worked. They destroyed a team that, in theory, had superior personnel. Fiorentina just took them apart. In the second half our boys sat back and defended, and you saw that it made me nervous, but it worked. We kept them out. I would trade the Great Man for no other manager.

SON [Saying his favorite word]: Truck! Truck!

FATHER [puzzled for a moment]: What? Ah, yes. You are right. We are back on the Champions League “truck.” The group is now wide open. And if one thing is clear, it is that we can beat anybody. We can beat anybody in the group, anybody in Italy, and perhaps anybody in Europe. We showed it in the first half tonight. We control our own destiny now.

SON [Pointing at the stuffed soccer ball they had kicked around together at halftime]: Ball!

FATHER: Your right, son. It is a simple game. Just men kicking a ball around, trying to put it in a net. So simple and so complex. And yet it brings us so much joy, this simple act. We suffer and suffer, and agonize and scream, and in just 90 minutes it is all made worthwhile. I’m just glad I was able to watch it with you. You’ve never been to Beautiful Florence, of course, except that you have. Your mother carried you through the streets of that most beautiful city before you were born, as she and I again visited the beautiful churches, and the museums, and the wonderful restaurants. You even visited the Artemio Franchi, the same place where the game was played tonight. You don’t remember it of course, but you were there with me.
And therein lays the true beauty and power of football, the power to bring a father and a son together, to watch and cheer a team that plays a match thousands and thousands of miles away. You will understand this all much better when you are older, my son; for now I am just glad we could be together to watch this.

SON [Says nothing, just sits holding his duck].

FATHER: I guess I am being silly talking to you like this. You are still just a baby. I just like talking to you. What could I expect you to say?

SON: Well, sorry I was so quiet. I was just thinking about how we have to beat fucking Lazio this weekend. What were you saying?

    if liverpool takes 4 points from lyon and we dont lose points against debrecen, i can see us beating lyon in the last game. what a revenge would that be!

    i think 10 points might not be enough for this group. it’s a good probability that us, lyon and pool will finish all with 12. i can hardly see debrecen geting any points.

    Tomas — when the Fellowship of the Ring movie came out, I was on a Tolkien messageboard that ran the “pants” meme, which is, take any line from the movie and replace a key word with the word “pants”. (E.g., “Gondor has no pants. Gondor needs no pants.”) It took weeks before anyone realized that the American posters and the British posters were getting two completely different images out of it.

    On topic, is the final CL table decided on head-to-head or goal difference? I can never remember.

    Tie-breaking criteria via wikipedia source:

    Based on Article 7.06 in the UEFA regulations, if two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria will be applied to determine the ranking:

    1. higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question;
    2. superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question;
    3. higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question;
    4. superior goal difference from all group matches played;
    5. higher number of goals scored;
    6. higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question, as well as its association, over the previous five seasons.

    We are very close to Pandev and Ledesma…everything depends on Mutu’s future with the club

    bringing pandev and ledesma would distress the team. imo we should wait till the summer, if we are to bring anyone. ledesma would have some logic, but pandev? he’s 26, so naturally he would want to be in the first team, wich would conflict with jo-jo’s playing time. mutu is almost 31 and i dont think he has a problem letting jo-jo play more often, plus he’s proven.

    ferrara planned on building his midfield around melo and zanetti? interesting. would have been a formidable partnership. im sure juve fans are happy to see marchisio play though.

    Well like I gather the article says, Ledesma would probably be a smart move either way, instantly giving us depth in our midfield that’s been missing for years. I would not object to Pandev depending on Mutu’s fate; I have no interest in dumping Mutu for no reason but between his health and financial issues his fate is uncertain.

    The only reason why the team looks organized now it’s because jovetic is playing. If it wasn’t for jove we would have been the team from last year, strangling every match with very few chanced on target. So, bringing pandev or ladesma would straiten the team, not otherwise.
    But, i agree that if would be pandev or mutu, no other way.
    I was for selling mutu before the start of this season, i still do, because i don’t think he will find his rhythm again in fiorentina, jovetic has taken over. But, also i think they will wait till January or maybe june to see if mutu can start scoring and be himself again. If mutu himself couldn’t come back, he won’t sit on the bench as substitution to jove.

    Never count Mutu out. He is the one that carried this team on his shoulders for 3 seasons. If it wasn’t for him, Fiorentina would not be where it is today. When Chelsea dumped him, and nobody would even look at him he proved all his critics wrong and came back. I know he is older now, but if his financial problem is fixed by next year he can still play a solid 2 years for Fiorentina. We all know he has what it takes to come back, he is very strong mentally. But not even Mutu can come back if this fine doesn’t get resolved, I mean what’s the point of kicking a ball around if your bankrupt and ur life is ruined. He has a family and 3 kids. But if the fine is resolved, I see no reason why he can’t be like Totti and play until 34.

    ok, we are seeing things differently. When Chelsea dumped him, juve got him and played him as a substitution all the time. Then we bought him to partner toni, which was fine but not great and as expected. I wouldn’t agree that he carried the team the last 3 seasons, that is not true.
    It’s not the financial problem i am talking about or i am taking it into consideration, that has side effects for sure, but it’s more like what kind of fiorentina would you like to see? I can see a stronger and more competitive without mutu and playing jovetic all the time. Of course if we lose jove then we should have kept mutu heh.

    Would putting Jovetic permanently in the starting 11 maybe help seal him up a little longer. Isn’t that a way of saying “We believe in you as being a big part of our teams success” with out saying it? Even though they should tell him too haha

    over the preceding 3 serie a seasons, Mutu had 46 goals in 76 appearances. maybe he didnt carry us, but we would not have finished as high as we did in any of those seasons.

    I’m more interested by the Ledesma angle than the Pandev one. Sure, we’re going to have to replace Mutu at some point in the next couple of years. However, bringing Ledesma in would give us another central midfielder, and that muddies the waters. Who would be the odd man or men out? Zanneti is good, but he’s old, fragile, and slowing down. Montolivo is good once every ten games, but worthless for the other nine. Donadel is scrappy and tough, but limited. Ledesma would start for us, but where and for whom?

    what mutu has done is far behind us. All respect for him. we have a new situation we have to deal with. at some point prandelli will have to make the cut. if he doesn’t play jovetic on regular basis, the kidd is gone (maybe he shouldn’t have let the bird fly so soon haha) and you must play mutu in the starting XI.
    one question: If mutu and jove were playing in real madrid or barcelona, who would be in the starting XI?
    we need to play jovetic now, it’s always better sooner then later.

    lui, i agree with you that jovetic is better than mutu right now. but selling mutu would be dumb. we have a ton of matches to play this year. jovetic and mutu will split time. lets be honest, no way pandev comes to firenze. and lets be honest, none of our other strikers have anywhere near mutu’s quality.

    lui, you’re missing the whole point. if, theoretically, mutu is gone and pandev comes in, do you think he will accept to be jo-jo’s reserve? he’s 26, he doesn’t have time to wait. given that we play 4-2-3-1, there’s room for only one offensive midfielder, cause i truly doubt prandelli will prefer pandev over genuine wingers like vargas or marchionni. sure, if we play 4-3-1-2, there’s room for both, but what happens to vargas then? he sucks at defending. mutu, on the other hand, is almost 31 and probably understands jo-jo will gradually take over.

    Dimitru, i wasn’t really going for pandev, i was discussing mutu. If we sell mutu we have to buy a striker, so anyone understands the situation. If pandev go for big club, he won’t be in the starting XI for sure, in our team he can get more play. It shouldn’t be pandev, it might be someone else, maybe younger.
    All i could see by now is that without jove in the game, we have none, and mutu’s pride is hard to handle.

    form is temporary, but class is permanent. jovetic has great potential. he is in a great run of form. his class is unestablished. he will have many chances to establish it. should problems arise, and i know the great man sees when form is suffering, mutu should and will step in. sorry for being so contrary, but i just refuse to let mutu be written off. and when has his pride ever been an issue? the last time i remember was at chelsea, and his issues with mourinho. if anything, his apparent happiness with staying at fiorentina over the years, in spite of options to leave, points to adi having his pride well under control.

    Its funny…when I heard we we’re buying a 18 year old straight off the bat the first thing I thought was “Oh god hes going to end up at the Primavera level and we’re never gonna hear from him again”
