Ajax 1 – Fiorentina 0: A Few Thoughts

By: Ted | February 19th, 2009

Today in Beautiful Florence a very ugly game of football was played, with the visiting team from Holland eaking out a one-nil win vs. the home side. Since the game was a UEFA Cup match, it is the first leg of a two-legged tie, with the return to be played in a few weeks in Amsterdam. Because of the away-goal rule, we will need a 1-0 lead after 90 minutes to go to extra time, and will otherwise have to score a couple of goals on the road. Yuck.

I’m disappointed to report I didn’t get to see the match, so this isn’t really a recap in any real sense. I certainly meant and wanted to see it, but I was just too busy with work. (Damn these matches that happen while I’m at the job!) I did try to have a stream on in the background while I banged away on some other stuff, but it shit the bed on me twice in the early going so I just gave up. Anyway, for a traditional match recap (written by some one who has actually seen the match, presumably) go here.

I wanted to see the match for a number of reasons, aside from my (hopefully) healthy obsession with the Viola. For one, I like Ajax, although I think I may like the Ajax of Brilliant Orange and old football videos featuring Johann Cryuff more than the actual, current Ajax, and for another I actually like the UEFA Cup. I was pretty much a neutral about the competition until last year when, of course, Fiorentina went far. I came to appreciate the knock-out competition and the chance to see the less publicized, but still very strong and hungry, clubs like Ajax or Zenit, or whatever. (Pretty much anyone except Rangers.) So anyway, I was looking forward to this.

I’m not going to sit here and pontificate on a game I didn’t see, but all the match reports I later read suggest that the Viola dominated for long stretches of the first half but simply could not put the ball in the net. The club has had trouble scoring all season (especially in the games played without Mutu, who played today) and it seemed that in this match our weaknesses came home to roost.

In the last few weeks we’ve gotten a few results that maybe we haven’t totally earned. I’m certainly not complaining; sometimes the ball bounces your way and sometimes it doesn’t, but I’ll always take it when it does. But there has been different ways of thinking about these results: on one hand, it has been said (by me, among others) that good teams need to grind out points when they’re not playing their best. So there’s nothing wrong with the last few results. On the other hand, some other people have suggested (including me again, being contradictory) that good teams actually don’t get in that position all that often and only have to grind out points once in a while. So it should be more of a concern.

Well, there is obviously a little something to be concerned about here, because (depending on how you think of it) we’ve played a few less-than-par matches in a row, and today were unable to grind out a win against a team who (from the match reports, at least) seemed inferior to us. It’s something to think about.

Now, do I think we can get a 2-0 win on the return? Most certainly. And by game day I will probably have talked myself into a 5-0 win. But I do hope they stay in the tournament, and show in Amsterdam the heart that was on such obvious display this past weekend.

Tim and I will both be back soon with the coming weekend’s game. Hope you are all well, and Forza Viola!

I think what I’m worried most about right now is our morale. Multiple people, myself included, have said before on this blog that one of Fiorentina’s main weaknesses — perhaps their most major weakness — is their lack of calmness when it comes to getting caught up in results. They get overly excited with a few good wins, and overly depressed after a bad loss or two. (From what I read in interviews with people like Prandelli, it’s a problem with Fiorentina fans, too. And that’s certainly true on this blog.) I don’t know whether the problems post-match in Genoa affected them through this match, although given what happened I wouldn’t be surprised if it did. And what I’m afraid will happen is that a (probably justified) feeling of anger and despondency coming out of this match will carry through to Chievo on Sunday.

Of course, there’s nothing we can do about it except sit around and hope Prandelli talks them out of it.

Not Monto, Mutu, or Frey? I’m slightly surprised.

I don’t think any of our boys are going to be swayed by huge paychecks and crap football. Well, unless Mutu is going to be forced to pay that extortion to Chelsea, then he’s kind of going to have to be swayed by huge paychecks, crap football or not.

Man City can go ahead and get over themselves …

If a player has a choice between champions league football (Viola will finish 3rd, ahead of Roma in 4th and Milan in 5th) with Fiorentina and no European football with City, what do you think an ambitious player would choose? If someone makes a decision strictly for monetary reasons, the Viola would be better off without the mercenary. If I were Corvino, I would ask for a King’s ransom for either Gamberini or Melo. Kuz, well, I’d put him in that category if he could shoot straight.

Work has been busy today so it looks like the preview of the game against Bassy’s little brother and the rest of the flying donkeys will go up tomorrow morning.

I think Angharad’s observation is interesting, but I am not sure if I see wild swings of CONFIDENCE, per se, with the team. I do see it on this blog and among the tifosi, but is that the problem at the team level? I do think we get tactically outcoached and more often than not I don’t see the sense in Prandelli’s personnel decisions or tactical choices. What I do think the team lacks is maturity — it often goes entire halves failing to build up play an dsimply relying on Commotto or Vargas racing down the wings and lobbing hopeful crosses into the box. We saw a lot of that yesterday, which disappointed me because I had thought it was on the wane. The question I keep coming back to is whether that stuff is a function of panic on the part of a youngish team or a function of poor game coaching. I don’t really know, but I am becoming more worried that it is the latter. What do you all think? Is it heresy to say that the Great Man is not so great? I know NickyViola, when he appears on this forum, has made the same points forcefully and I find my self starting to agree….

I think he just has much less of a deck to deal from now then he did last year

never thought i’d miss liverani as well as ufalusi, but i think we do.

monto’s not cutting it and no one else in the midfield is stepping up

now, ultimately everything goes back to the coach anyways, so yes you can blame him for the youngsters not stepping up quickly,

but you could also blame him for the grass not being cut correctly if you really wanted to

    i’ve asked this question before.

    who will replace him.

who wants to come to a small market team who spends 1/4 of the euros of an inter with ungrateful fans who scream for their coaches head

he took you to the CL last year, remember?

You could analyse the tactics etc but remember this, we have matched the top teams that we’ve played against but just could not kill them off, and i put it down to the players. Watch the likes of kuz, monto, jovetic closely and count the number of bad passes/tackles/positioning and thats where the problem lies as far as i can see it, not to mention all those chances gila has been missing recently whereas those behind him just can’t aim for anything but the stands. Dainelli and kroldrup look half asleep throughout and so on and so on. So its the players that need to find their form quick otherwise we’ll miss out on champions league to roma.
