CL Wrap-Up and Udinese Preview
By: Ted | November 7th, 2009
As with my last post, this one will be really brief. As I’ve explained, I’m going through a real busy patch at work and Timmy is on vacation, so this is largely just to give us all a place to post thoughts, etc.
—————————————
First off are some much-delayed, and not very ground-shaking, thoughts about where we stand in the Champions League. After an inspiring second half explosion vs. Debrecen on Wednesday, we now sit on 9 points, second in our group, and 5 in front of a highly regarded Liverpool squad. We next play Lyon in beautiful Florence. Lyon, of course, is in first, it could be argued that they could be a little comfortable seeing how they’ve been great in the competition so far, and they will be on the road. It is not unthinkable that we could get three in that match, which puts us safely into the next round. We will see, but it is certainly a date to circle on your calendars.
———————————–
On the Domestic front we have Udinese on Sunday.
Here are some blind guesses as to the starting line-ups:
Udinese: Handanovic; Basta, Zapata, Coda, Lukovic; Inler, D’Agostino, Asamoah; Pepe, Corradi, Di Natale.
Fiorentina: Frey; Comotto, Natali, Kroldrup, Gobbi; Montolivo, Donadel; Marchionni, Santana, Vargas; Gilardino.
For the Viola Dainelli is suspended, while Gamberini and Adrian are out with injuries. Apparently Frey, Zanetti and My Precious are all iffy, although I believe all three could ultimately play.
Right now it looks like the match will NOT be televised on American TV, so make sure your computers are fired up and set to stun.
I see a 2-1 Viola victory on the road.
——————————–
IF I get to see some of the match (I didn’t see much of the game on Wednesday because I was at work) I will try to get some thoughts up later. Sorry about how little I am putting up now; once I get the next issue out the door (I edit a magazine) I should have a little more free time.
In the meantime, hope you are all well. Enjoy tomorrow’s match. Forza Viola.

I don’t know what the French handball looked like, but Pazzini’s was not the high point of Italian soccer. His was waived off though.

just for the record, i think henry’s hand is the worst.
paz’s hand was in a friendly, meaningless.
gila’s was a league game, certainly had implications, but there was 40 odd other league games to make up the difference for either squad.
henry’s was with the world cup finals hanging in the balance, with the hopes and dreams of an entire country hanging in the balance.
just despicable and so clearly and utterly french

Yeah, I guess that was pretty bad, especially with what was at stake, as you say, slakas. He looked like a basketball player trying to control a pass. The WC without France would miss something, but how they got in was shameful. I feel bad for the Irish.

Same Thierry Henry whose dive against Spain in 2006 won France the game.
Once a cheat, always a cheat.

my evil twin, skippy, is starting to love it, however, because every time henry or france gets mentioned by the british announcers, the scorn will be hilarious.

lol
The agent of Fiorentina centre-back Per Kroldrup has revealed his client will soon start looking for a new club if the Gigliati don’t make their intentions clear.
The 30-year-old will be out of contract next summer, but Fiorentina have failed to offer him an extension.
“The directors have yet to contact me,” agent Ippolito Gallovich is quoted as saying on GoalCity.
“It’s not up to me to decide on a contract renewal – it’s up to the club. The player’s wish is to stay, but it takes two parties to reach an agreement.”
Kroldrup arrived in Tuscany from Premier League side Everton and is now left to ponder his future.
“I think he will have a wide margin in which to make his choice, particularly if he sees out his contract,” explained the representative.
“I don’t see that many free-agents available in that role.”

The quote I love from Henry is:
“I will be honest, it was a handball. But I’m not the ref,” Henry said. “I played it. The ref allowed it. That’s a question you should ask him.”
Just brushing his part of it straight to the ref. He is still responsible as he deliberatly stuck his hand out to control the ball to his foot. It’s like he’s saying it’s ok to play to break the rules and if the ref doesn’t call it, its fine. He is pretty much saying, ‘Ya I cheated, but he let it happen, go get him.’
I bet even Arsene Wenger ‘did see’ this call.

At least Henri didn’t try to deny it. I’ll give him a little credit for that.
Lippi is claiming that Pazzini told the ref to disallow the goal he knocked in with his hand. If that’s true, even though it was a friendly – respect!

Paz did that in the purple once, too. Ref called a penalty on (Catania? Cagliari? Forget who we were playing. It was definitely a minnow) for elbowing Paz in the box, and Paz told the ref to wave it off because the player actually elbowed one of his own teammates instead.

that is simply outragrous of henry! the guy has no ethics. fucking cheat! i’ve lost all respect for him! that like saying it’s ok to cheat as long as you don’t get caught. it’s not ok at all you fucker! he might involunteerily, but still, he should of told the referee right away. there’s no excuse for something like that!

um, just for the record, i seem to remember gila saying the same thing or something similar.
glass houses
are we gettin a preview?
did everyone come back from international duty without injuey?Posted from

Yeah, I think the Italians should take the high road when it comes to pointing fingers at anyone’s lack of ethics. Glass houses, indeed.
Gobbi’s contract is up in the summer. He’s a loyal Viola soldier, but an upgrade would be nice, especially if they hope to win trophies. Can Corvino upgrade with what they pay him? Thoughts?
