Fiesole Caldine 0 – Fiorentina 4; A Hot Tuscan Friendly
By: slakas | August 11th, 2012
Today in Fiesole, a small town 5 miles Northeast of Florence, Fiorentina played a friendly against newly promoted Serie D side Fiesole Caldine. It was a hot Tuscan afternoon, the temperature at starting time was over 90 degrees and the game was played at a fairly leisurely pace.
Making things more difficult for La Viola was the absence of many players, both for injury and International duty. Missing were Emiliano Viviano, Juan Cuadrado, Stevan Jovetic, Juan Manuel Vargas, Matija Nastasić, Mohammed Hegazy and Ruben Olivera.
Despite the absence of some of the regulars, other Viola, both old and new faces, made the most of the opportunities. Adem Ljajic and Haris Seferovic started in front and the two of them accounted for all four goals, a brace for each.
Newcomers Borja Valero, Alberto Aquilani and new Regista David Pizzaro also contributed mightily to the match, completely controlling the midfield, something this Viola fan hasn’t seen in many years.
Facundo Roncaglia held down the back line with Gonzalo Rodriguez and Michele Camporese, while Manuel Pasqual, wearing the Captain’s armband filled out the outside of the midfield, with Mattia Cassani on the other side in a 3-5-2.
Highlights

Yeah, honestly… If Carroll had scored 30 goals last season I’d given them the benefit of doubt, but that didn’t happen. What’s wrong with them?

-

Why does Football Italia keep mentioning “who would, by the way, surely leave Florence,” next to anything related to Jovetić?

-

Well I sort of get that they are going for a “British” identity (even though their best player is a Uruguayan who is clearly suffering by being surrounded by such a lack of skill), but all it’s leading to is overpaying for underachievers, since any marginal British talent is going to be overhyped.

-

Yeah but they didn’t have to pay astronomical amounts for these talents…

-

I’ve had soooo much less angst after deleting Football Italia from my favorites…

-

football italia is good for one thing and one thing only and that’s translating articles from other italian publications.
their own columnists are idiots and any story they generate is always bullcrap and usually juve centric and should be ignored

-

I think it’s more of, the American owners have tons of cash and say go get players I don’t care the fee. Fernando Torres, even during his scoring spree a few years past, was never worth 50 million..

-

I’ll agree with slakas on Football Italia with the singular exception of Giancarlo Rinaldi, who’s posts are always enjoyable and is a must-follow for English speaking Fiorentina fans.
Football Italia is best used as news-aggregator of Tuttosport, Corrierre Dello Sport, and Gazzetto Dello Sport.

I guess there was some kerfuffel at the Supercoppa Italiana. Napoli had three players sent off against Juve. Napoli did not come out of the locker room for the ceremony. Pictured is ex-man Behrami, and linked-man Gargano.

-

De Laurentiis was mighty pissed off, too. It’s funny.
That’s quite a neat retro font combo they’re using for the shirt numbers/names.

-

I do feel sorry for Napoli though, they’re lambasted left and right now.

-

With the font + shirt number Behrami looks like a wide receiver.

-

Also, it’s fucking not right to see him in a different shirt. Shitty. And we’ve thus far had no success in replacing his field function.

-

Actually, it was two players and the coach red carded
plus the red card suspensions carry over for Napoli in their first serie a match v Palermo, so they’ll be without Pandev, Zuniga and Walter Mazzarri in week 1

-

will Quagliarella join viola this week??

-

Again…
Apparently he’s “40% likely” to join Juve. Science!

-

Dossena has also now been suspended against Fiorentina for making an intimidating gesture at the referee.

-

Pandev will also miss the Viola match after given a two match ban.
Quagliarella is just a rumor at this point, but I thought aquilani was as well, so who knows.
The transfer window is open until the end of the month, there’s still time.

-

First meaningful game of the season:
August 18 v. Novara – Coppa Italia 3rd Round. I believe it’s at the Franchi.
Four days away. Can’t wait to see some of these new guys in somewhat meaningful action.

Supposedly Montella still really wants Gomez, and doesn’t want Cerci, who they are trying to sell.

-

time announced for Saturdays match, noon eastern.
also Fior will wear the new red and white jersey’s in tomorrows friendly

-

Remind me – which Gomez does Montella want?

-

Papu Gomez from Catania

-

gomez would be way better than cerci should do a trade plus cash
