Fiorentina 2 – Atalanta 1

By: Ted | April 5th, 2009

Today mighty Fiorentina defeated a feisty Atalanta club 2-1, coming back from being a goal down, and signaling to the rest of Serie A that the race for the fourth and final Champions League spot is far from over. The win, on the road, was particularly impressive, seeing how Atalanta is a solid home team and the good guys were beset by injures.

(I always have a surge of nostalgia when I watch Atalanta. They were the first team I ever saw the Viola play live. Curiously enough, I also saw them playing Fiorentina when a young man named Giampaolo Pazzini got a start in place of an injured Luca Toni. He got a brace, and I predicted big things for the kid. Does anyone know what happened to him?)

In his preview of the match, Tim hoped for a draw. I think that was all any of us were hoping for; with Gamberini, Melo, and Adi Mutu all missing the game, it seemed realistic to hope for a “grind-it-out” 0-0 draw, especially with the scoring woes the club had been showing us in recent weeks.

Instead, I was impressed with the Viola’s attacking flair. I admit: I did not see the first half; my little boy has been a bit sick this weekend, and taking care of him this morning came before the game. But I liked what I saw in the second. Gila seemed back to his old opportunistic self, the player we all wondered at in the first half, and the player who convinced us we could live without Pazzini. My Precious, who sometimes receives a lot of stick on these boards (some deserved, some not) continues to do what made me really start to like him in the first place; he runs right at defenses and creates havoc. (I was happy to witness his first goal for Fiorentina, even if it was not the greatest penalty I ever saw.) Semioli was quietly effective out wide, and while neither Monto nor Kuz is playing they way they should, they did seem to play the game with a bit more confidence this week. Even the back line, mangled with injuries and suspensions, looked OK. This was a game that gave me hope.

As I said, I was primed to have a tough weekend. The worst news of the lot was that Adrian Mutu’s knee swelled up badly after the internationals, and that he is scheduled tomorrow to have what is being alternatively described as either “exploratory” or “keyhole” surgery. Wrap it up any way you want to; if the phrase has the word “surgery” in it, I am officially worried. I’ve heard a lot of things over the last few days, most of it not really backed by facts, but word on the street is he’s out somewhere between four weeks and the rest of the season. Christ. More on this when we get some decent info.

In the meantime, we hold onto 5th place, two behind Genoa and three in front of Roma, who both won this weekend. We’ve got Cagliari at home next, chased by Udinese away and then the big one vs. Roma at the Artemio Franchi. We’ll see what happens this week with Adi, but tonight I go to bed optimistic. We picked up a tough and much needed three points today. That’s all we can do. If Prandelli can bring this beat up (both physically and physiologically) club back to the Champions League next season, perhaps more people will start nodding knowingly as I refer to him as the “Great Man.”

Well damnn. Ivanovic HAD to score 2 goals against Liverpool right before Firentina were about to buy him. Now hes def not coming to Florence. Fiorentina would look like a different team with Ivanovic in the line up. Lets just make it to CL and we’ll get reinforcements this summer!

i got my mutu jersey from a guy in thailand off of ebay.

took about 2 months to get here (he sent it by rowboat)
but it was half as expensive as the retail stores.

if you’d rather just go retail, then you can get one here for $70 US, you can add any name and number for a nominal fee

When I wear my Fiorentina jersey in Denver, people don’t know what it is. “Is that a biking jersey?” “Is that a racing jersey?” Good lord, no.

A guy who refs my kids basketball and soccer games saw me wearing it and yelled, during the bloody game “Fiorentinaaaaaa!!” It’s cool when a fellow hipster recognizes. The world comes together. *sniff* It’s beautiful.

Di Silvestri is one of the most sought after Italian defenders, hes represented the national team at all levels and was one of Lazios most prized defenders…i’ve watched him for a long time, hes a pretty good investment. My guess is with Di Silvestri and Giovinco, were basically trying to build the U-21 in Florence. Its a shame we lost Nocerino and Palladino a couple summers ago.

Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli has warned his side not to allow themselves to be distracted against Cagliari as he demands nothing less than three points from the game.

The Viola welcome the Rossoblu hoping to keep their hopes of attaining fourth place alive. Fiorentina are just two points behind Genoa, and a win could see them leapfrog the port city side who face a tricky tie with Juventus.

Prandelli has underlined the importance of staying focussed on tomorrow’s game rather than think about anything else. The coach believes his players have what it takes to show their mettle and rise to the challenge.

“Cagliari are a strong team who know how to play football. We must not rush our game, we have to maintain balance,” Prandelli told the club’s official website.

“I am happy because the team has been training well this week. Cagliari will come here under no pressure so they will play more tranquil.

“Sometimes certain tensions stop teams from expressing their best football.

“Cagliari are a good side and the results speak for themselves. They have something more up front in respect to other sides.

“The important thing is to have conviction and the spirit of the group.”

OMG – wtg, is it april fools day again?

My Girlfriend Is Not Pregnant By Adrian Mutu – Fiorentina’s Alessandro Gamberini

Fiorentina defender Alessandro Gamberini has lashed out at the Italian media after reports claimed his girlfriend was expecting a baby fathered by team-mate Adrian Mutu.

The stopper is furious and he has rubbished the rumours as false and without foundation in what seems like something straight out of a soap opera.

“There have been difficulties this season, but here in Florence people have over-stepped the mark with totally unfounded news,” Gamberini told Il Corriere Dello Sport.

“People said my girlfriend was expecting a baby from Adrian Mutu and that I was furious to death with him – but that’s not [true at] all.

“I also heard [that coach Cesare] Prandelli is not the same man and that he doesn’t speak to us.

“But I will tell everyone that it’s best just to laugh off these shocking rumours.

“I can guarantee everyone that none of this is true. It’s best to leave these things aside.”

Fiorentina clash with Cagliari this weekend as they continue to chase a Champions League berth.

    PS ted

prandelli’s a “great man” regrdless of our results this season.

Adriano’s former coach Cesare Prandelli says the troubled striker needs help.

Fiorentina boss Prandelli, who coached Adriano at Parma from 2002-04, says a helping hand is what the forward needs.

“At Parma, Adriano was very motivated, he was in the right environment with many young players,” Prandelli told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“He made a lot of sacrifices, I remember he was a sensitive young lad. I had him at a particular time in his career.

“He listened to my advice with the aim of always improving. He was particularly sensitive, he suffered a lot from his father’s death.

“Right now he is suffering from a depression crisis and he needs help. He needs to rediscover the desire to train, the love of the football pitch.”

Giovinco is a Dynamo with velcro on his boots and a blistering shot. Any team should love to have that kid on the roster. He’s a Torino native. I don’t see him leaving the Old Lady for money or a starting position.
