Fiorentina-Milan recap and a light retrospective analysis of our campaign
By: Dumitru | June 1st, 2009So, on Sunday, we lost 2-0 to Milan, at home, the last of the countless losses we suffered at their hands, courtesy to goals scored by the speedy brazilian duo of Pato and Kaka, and the little duck is developing a worrying habit of scoring goals against us, being guilty of getting on the scoresheet in each of the last three encounters. I remember like yesterday, how last year he daggered our purple hearts, by scoring a late and the only goal, in a match we clearly dominated, just after substituting a very angry Seedorf, as Milan overtook us in the table and my inner voice was telling me we won’t be able to reclaim the 4th spot. Fortunately, i was wrong, as, with the help of Napoli(Napoli-Milan 3-1), the Universe and a late goal, away, against Torino, by Batiposer(for wich i absolve him of all his later sins), Fiorentina managed to fight back and qualify for CL.
The game had a lot at stake, as, had we won by a two goal margin, we would have achieved direct qualification to the group stage of CL. It was supposed to be Gila’s revenge against his former club, but, it wasn’t meant to be, and, although we lost, we had the honor to play the last game of Ancelotti’s Milan, the team that dominated European football for the last decade. As of next season, Paolo Maldini, the impecable milanese capitano, will retire, while Ancelotti will depart to Chelsea, where he will take over a team badly wanting to prove ManU that they are not done yet. Also, it’s very likely that Kaka will leave the calcio world for Real Madrid, as Florentino Perez is planning a new Galactico era.
Before the begining of the season, i thought we will finish 5th, as it seemed to me that playing both in Serie A and CL was too much for our young and inexperienced team to reallistically compete with Inter, Milan, Juve and Roma, so finishing 4th should be considered a success, but i dare to say we could have finished second, have we improved our record against bigger teams(Inter, Juve, Milan). It seems like we have an inferiority complex against established teams, and that has to change if we are to challenge for scudetto one day. I know that losing is part of the game, but 12 defeats in one season is a bit too much.
Our season was a eventful one, with lowlights(Lazio-Fiorentina 3-0; Fiorentina-Lecce 1-2) and highlights(Genoa-Fiorentina 3-3; Fiorentina-Roma 4-1), and San Cesare proved, once again, that he knows how to righten the ship in crisis situations. The most important thing is that we are establishing ourselves as a top 4 team, that plays regularly in CL, and that will attract players of higher calibre to Franchi, and i’m sure our transfer mastermind, Pantaleo Corvino, is working on that as we speak. It will be a long, rumour filled summer without calcio.
That said, Forza Viola and happy summer, everyone!

remember this was only gila’s first season playing regularly for fiorentina, you would think there is a good possibility he will be top goal scorer next season.

Miguel Veloso, creative defensive midfielder of Sporting Clube Portugal, it’s a perfect substitute to Felipe Melo.
Veloso it’s a great great player…Very completed!
There’s really no way to describe him!
I like to see him in Fiorentina AC! Forza Viola!Posted from

I agree MAD; although it would be nice to give a better account of ourselves against the elite teams, we could have finished 3rd, maybe 2nd by just beating the teams we’re supposed to beat at home, and not losing on the road. Simple eh? Of course, that’s a perfect season where you proved the bookmakers right every week and as our gambling addict slakas can attest – that kind of season just doesn’t happen. Shit happens, in fact.
I’m very happy with the way things went this year. When the lads were playing like rubbish back in Jan/Feb, then Mutu went down, then Melo was suspended, there’s no way I thought we’d be 4th, with a last day chance to do higher. Great stuff.
My wish list is; Jo-Jo keeps his head on straight, Monto finds his game, Vargas keeps his, we get a CL-quality center back, the RB from Cruzeiro works out, and we get some attacking depth up front (cuz we’re gonna need it).

If you take our end of the year squad and add a (hopefully) healthy Mutu and Santana, things are already a lot better.
That being said we need to work on the defense. Comotto did a respectable job on the right but I don’t know how much left he has in him, and either way Gamberini needs a new partner, Dainelli served this club admirably but he’s on a steep decline and our defense has been a liability for way too long. I really hope we keep Pasqual, when he returned to favor he did a great job and is much more balanced than Vargas, who has proven to be a great midfielder anyway and will hopefully push Kuz to pick up his game.
Hopefully Jo-Jo stops his Osvaldo impression also.

we are linked with ambrosini, the veteran milan midfield workhorse. apparently, milan are reluctant to give him an extension. i would love to see him in a purple shirt. he’s such an underrated player and a great character. he has tons of experience and will be of great use for our squad.

For some reason I hate Ambrosini, yes he’s a vital piece for Milan and has often been an unsung hero, but there’s something about him I can’t stand. i don’t want anyone considered too old for Milan to be playing for la Viola anyway.

he’s a really nice guy, nolan. i remember i went to a match beetwen italy and moldova(italy won 1-0), and he was the only one to give autographs, the other players from italian NT gave the ’superstar’ attitude to everyone that asked for an autograph.

I would like to see us target getting into the knockout round of the Champions League for next season. Given the Fiorentina budget and the age of some of our top players (eg, Mutu, who is only going to get slower), that’s a realistic goal, and if we got that far, who knows what might happen?
For that, I think we definitely need to strengthen the defence, either through the addition of another Felipe Melo defensive midfielder type or a good central defender. This should be a long-term signing, so we can compete in the 2010-11 CL as well!
But, it also means we need a third striker, perhaps an older player as a single-season ‘rental’, to provide depth up front so there can be some kind of rotation for Serie A games. Someone more Gila than Mutu, and a big guy, as I always felt we looked a little weak in front of the opponents’ goal mouth.

Real Madrid have agreed a €65m fee with AC Milan for Kaka, according to reputable Spanish radio station Cadena SER.

Gilardino is invited to “adopt a grandmother” night…they thank him for donating a new machine which “revitalizes” the people of the retirement home. At dinner he sees the staff being overly mean to the retirees and when the time comes to demonstrate the machine, they first ask the old man who goes inside and comes out feeling rejuvinated and energetic…when Gila goes inside it immediately starts throwing suds, the man accuses Gila of having messed with the controls and asks him to please be more courteous, the other man pushes Gila back in the machine, suds him again, and then he realizes its all a joke. Theres also a great Punk’d where an escaped convict hides in Mutu’s car after a tv show.

Is that Jo-Jo’s real profile? Gotta love what he’s a fan of (except Sheva)
Also why are we supposedly “very close” to Panucci? Didn’t we learn anything from the Vieri experiment?

According to the Corriere we are very close to signing Edgar Barretto, 24 years old Paraguayan midfielder from Reggina, fantastic left foot

Looking at Jo-jo’s profile the only other viola I found on there was Seculin (third goalkeeper)

Jo-Jo got his hair done for his Facebook page! How cute. I will give him props though. It’s a much better ‘do than the Howard Stern look he rocks during matches.

Has Jonathan, the 23-year-old Cruzeiro defender been signed yet? I guess Roma’s interested now.
