Fiorentina: News, Notes and Nonsense
By: Ted | July 8th, 2008
God, I hate the off-season. I miss watching my club every week. I thought this summer wouldnāt be that bad, since we had the Euros, which turned out to be really fun. But now thatās over and Iām left surfing the ānet every day for rumors of my team. I canāt wait until things get started again; if I watch one more āclassicā match on FSC Iām going to break down and start caring about baseball again. Anyway, in the meantime, hereās whatās been going on at our beloved club since the weekend.
First, a couple of fairly impressive signings were announced. First, former Torino captain Gianluca Comotto signed with the Viola to help strengthen the back line. I like this addition; everything from his experience and his leadership to his defensive versatility will be useful next season.
The Viola also signed a highly regarded young Brazilian forward named Jefferson. Heās one for the future, although some of the reports Iāve read say he has the potential to become a very strong player. I wonāt pretend Iāve ever seen him play, but the Great Manās track record on signing young people suggests that it could pan out, so I am all for seeing what young Jefferson can do.
According to Viola Bigwig Corvino, thatās it: he says the Viola wonāt be signing any other players this year. Itās undeniable that theyāve spent a bunch of money and dramatically improved the squad for the upcoming season, all without losing any of the most important players at the club. We will see if this is indeed it, or if there in fact will be more signings over the remaining days of summer.
One thing thatās for sure is that regardless of whether the signings actually stop, the rumors will not cease until the transfer window closes. The latest one, for this week, is that Fiorentina will sign Interās Nicolas Burdisso in order to get more help at the back. Interesting, but this one has a long way to go before it becomes fact.
Finally, on a sadder note, it looks like Papa Waigo is set to leave the club, to destinations still undetermined. Look, things are going to be tight on the front line with Gila, Mutu, and a cast of supporting players fighting for playing time, but I liked the freakishly long-legged Papa Waigo and wish him well wherever he winds up. If for no other reason, he must be remembered fondly by Viola fans for coming off the bench in the Juve game (notice I donāt have to explain WHICH Juve game Iām talking about) and playing like a man. Papa, you should never have to buy a drink in the worldās most beautiful city every again.
Iāāll be back soon. Hope you all take care and, like me, try to keep it together until the matches start again.

I still believe there will be more signings, a cb and possibly Diogo Luis Santo a stricker who his club have confirmed that a italion non milan club had a 9m bid turned down and that it would take 11-12m to buy him and it is believed that it was Fiorentina who made the bid and that they are still interested. We have 6 forwards when papa leaves and 3 forward places, Gilardino has to settle, Jefferson is a great prospect but a loan could due him well and i dont think he will see alot of first team action, Stevan JovetiÄ is good but is young and in a new country plus Diogo is top talent i would love to see him sign

Oh, please, PLEASE no Nico Burdisso. As someone who (mostly unwilling) watched every single Inter game in the second half of last season, I can attest that he is AWFUL. Possibly more awful than Matrix, which at this point is saying something. The only positive note, if such a signing were to occur, would be that he’d be the last in a long(ish) line of defenders, so (hopefully) wouldn’t see much playing time.
I’m marking down the calendar until 8 August, when the Olympics start. There will only be a little bit of football (starting our very own Monty), but at least there will be other interesting sports to watch.

Ted, the other day I watched Milan vs Inter classic and almost went back to baseball, but found something else on GolTV. IT’S ONLY JULY!!!!

I would secretly laugh at Fiorentina if they managed to get Burdisso. (It would be quite a waste of money). Other clubs like Lyon are also interested in him too (a fact that constantly eludes me.)

Yeah these ‘classics’ on FSC are killing me as well. GolTV is repeating stuff too, the same (I guess Argentina’s league) match has been on every day now for the past week I think.

BASEBALL! That sounds like someone needs an intervention. Nothing is so bad, so desperate that baseball is the answer. Look at it this way, at least your team is actually moving during the mercato season. Aside from youth players, my team (Inter) has not make a single solitary transfer! As I have already hashed over all the rumors, I am thinking that I will have to start making things up just to get something up on the board. YIKES!

Comotto is usually pretty solid. A nice, relatively inexpensive way to get solid experienced depth. Nice signing.

And he is Roman.
Whats not to love?

Lots of stories today that Frey has agreed to extend his contract through 2013. Should be done today or tomorrow.

aren’t you guys pretty weak at right back? Is Jorgensen really gonna play that in the CL, he will get butchered.

I thought Comotto was from Torino… whatever, it was still a smart signing.

Comotto is actually from Ivrea, which is indeed in Piemonte (and the Provincia di Torino). I assumed that Daniele was referring to the fact that he had once been giallorosso (and is therefore blessed in D’s books, unless one’s name is Chivu, etc.).
Jorgensen is not the greatest right back in Viola history, and will need help against top flight Champions League opponents, but even the most Viola-made among us realise that they aren’t going to win the thing (this season).
It’s also possible that Prandelli may try Comotto there, with Gamberini and Koldrup in the middle (and Vargas on the left, of course).

Comotto is a bit of a nutjob, that’s what’s not to like about him.

Really, alessio? I haven’t heard anything about Comotto’s nutjobby-ness; I’d be interested to hear what kind of personality he has to offer. The only things I really know about Comotto are a) he’s a solid player; and b) he has fabulous hair.
Frey’s contract extension is one of the most relieving things I’ve heard in a long time. In my opinion, he’s one of the greatest goalkeepers in the world right now, although since he’s at Fiore I realize most people don’t notice this. Those three point-blank saves within a minute he made against Ibra in the first Inter-Viola match last season carved out a little Frey-shaped space in my heart just for him.

His bitchy attack on Del Piero was funny more than anything, he couldn’t dream of cleaning Del Piero’s boots, but the best one was when he threatened “Open War” on Torino if they didn’t let him go to the Viola. Considering he’s from Turin, and had been with the Granata for a decade or so, that’s pretty lowbrow.

Storari to Fiorentina on loan from Milan.

And this year’s jerseys have just been introduced in a ceremony that got almost 15,000 to the Franchi.
You can see them here:http://www.acffiorentina.it/it/Default.aspx
I am not a fan of the gold trim on the Viola, which they had said last year was just an 80th anniversary thing.

In all honesty, I am not a fan of del Piero, and if someone gave me a microphone and a national television audience I’d launch a bitchy attack on him myself. I don’t know what Comotto said specifically, but I’d probably agree with it. And Torino treated him atrociously after he got injured, so as far as I’m aware, they started the “open war”. That said, it does look like he’s not too sensible when it comes to watching his mouth in front of cameras, so hopefully Fiorentina will put a stop to that.
The kit thing — you know, I’ve never understood while “kit reveals” are such a big deal, especially in Italy when every team has very defined colours. It’s like I was saying about Milan — look, they’re going to have vertical stripes, of red and black. And the Viola’s? Are going to be purple. In fact, everyone’s kits are more or less going to look exactly the same as they have always looked. So what on earth is the big deal. *rolls eyes*

Maybe I didn’t pay enough close attention…but can you tell me how it’s different? The three look the same to me. I like them though, especially the red one.

There is more gold trim on the Viola one and less trim on the other two. That’s about it.
The entire thing is an opportunity for Lotto to try to sell some replicas, which is a much more difficult thing to do in Italy than in Britain.
Trust a Juventino to like the red one. I’ve never understood its purpose. Tanti anni fa the Viola used to play the entire season in Viola, as it doesn’t really clash with anyone else’s colours in Italy. I’d be quite happy with the Viola and the white, and basta.

Si, Comotto was once la Roma.
Not Roman in the heritage sense!
