Fiorentina v. Atalanta: Preview
By: Ted | November 7th, 2008
This Sunday in Florence the Viola will take on Atalanta in a critical Series A matchup. Coming off another disappointing match in the Champions League, the team here has a golden opportunity to get their club back on track. With Cristiano Doni and Luca Cigarini both out for Atalanta, this is the perfect chance for Fiorentina to get three points.
This will always be a special fixture for me. Atalanta visiting Fiorentina was the first live match I saw in Italy. It was a cold, beautiful night in November (not unlike the one expected this weekend) and as I sat with my wife in the stands alternately watching the play on the field and the choreography of the Ultras, I knew I was hooked. This match looks to be extra special as both teams are quite strong this year and should come out fighting.
There is some bad news for the Viola, however, as it seems that Adi Mutu has suffered yet another injury and will be unavailable for the weekend. Adrian has had a frustrating year so far. Meanwhile Gianluca Comotto is also out, although reports right now indicate that Juan Vargas is back to speed.
Anyway, I still like the Viola in this match; they have played pretty well at home all year and are facing a team that is never quite the same without Doni. Fiorentina has had an up-and-down year and certainly has not yet had a game where they have just run their opponents off the pitch like they are capable of. In spite of not having Mutu, I think the return of Gila from his suspension combined with the lingering frustrations of Champions League play could wind up unleashing the Viola in a very positive way on Sunday. We shall see.

The game will not be shown here in the states on TV. Looks like another morning spent with the computer.
I will be back Sunday night with the wrap-up. Hope you are all doing well.

I heard today that Santana is taking a breather on this one…were looking at Semioli-Gilardino attack with Jovetic just behind them…sounds awesome. I’d put in Kuz over Donadel, but Pasqual has impressed the hell out of me these last few games!!! Oh we might get back Vargas for this one, the good thing is after this, we move to an easier schedule, no more games every 3 days. The boys need their rest.

I gotta question for you all, Stan Collymore said on Setanta’s football show during the week that if you want to win a league youve got to have quality up the middle, ie. Quality main striker, quality main central midfielder, Quality main central defender and quality GK.
I was wondering, based on this equation, how does everyone rate the top clubs, lets say Milan, Inter, Juve, Roma, Fiorentina and Napoli. Im going to do my own write up of this on my own blog but was interested to hear what you all thought.Posted from

Jovetic must to be involved in this situation. He is pure class and needs to play every game.

Anyone have a functioning stream? My normal sites are letting me down.
Oh, and, ESPN says:
Frey
Pasqual-Gamberini-Dainelli-Comotto
Melo-Montolivo-Kuzmanovic
Semioli-Jovetic
GilardinoPosted from

“Fiorentina continues to attack despite the double advantage”, according to La Gazzetta’s MBM. I’m so relieved — that’s exactly the attitude we need to have and what is so often lacking.

About time. This is what we want to see from the boys.

Gotta wonder how much a difference it makes to get Semioli on the pitch — he looked good tat last time he got in.

From what I can tell from Gazzetta’s MBM + my limited Italian, Kuzmanovic and Jovetic are linking up really well, although neither has quite managed to finish yet.

“Fiorentina continues to govern the game and to cross in the middle, Atalanta struggles to respond”

i think it makes a difference to not be playing a CL team as well.
hehe
but really, someone else said it before, you have to beat the teams you should

Exactly, slakas. I’m not comparing this to losing to Bayern, I’m comparing this to losing to Siena. If we can’t beat Atalanta (no offense to them), we have serious problems.

Melo’s distance shot is class…He plays the same way Donadel does, he won’t score much, but when he does he’ll do it from his house. Gila never lost his rythym, next…on to Cagliari!!!
Oh and I made get some flak on this but does it seem like we play better Mutu-less?

I don’t think we play better Mutu-less, it’s just that Mutu has been struggling with injuries recently and it’s better for him to actually recover than play with a crippled Mutu. The big problem is we have yet to find a front three that click this season.
