Fiorentina v. Reggina: Preview

By: Ted | October 16th, 2008

This morning I woke up, fed my son, and then as always went overt to the computer to see what was new in the world. I read about last night’s presidential debate and tonight’s big baseball game featuring my hometown Red Sox. Something, however, was nagging me, sticking like a thorn in the back of my mind. “Didn’t I used to watch soccer in the old days?” I thought. Thinking even harder, I remembered that I used to follow a team in that pretty city of Florence after I first visited there and watched the club thrash another club called Atalanta with two goals in the last eight minutes. “Yes,” I thought, “I did used to love a club from beautiful Florence. They were called….Fiorentina.” So I went to a Calcio website I like to visit and, low and behold, these Fiorentina guys are playing a match this Saturday vs. Reggina. “Wouldn’t that be fun to watch,” I thought, “for old time’s sake.”

All right, I’m kidding. The international break hasn’t been quite that long. My four-month-old hasn’t grown up and gone off to college. But it still feels like a hell of a long time. When the break first started I was actually a little grateful, as I had been spending a ton of time watching the many Fiorentina matches and then writing about them. I needed to spend a little more time with the family. But nuts to that, I’m jonesing for some football. It’s nice to have the boys back.

This Saturday the Viola take on Reggina in Florence. Good news for us in the States because Saturday games are televised here. Good news for Fiorentina fans in general because Reggina is not off to the best of starts and the Viola have been strong at home. The boys have also been strong in recent matches, winning their last two without giving up a goal. (Albeit vs. Genoa and Chievo, but still.) After the hammering vs. Lazio a few weeks ago a bunch of us said that the boys had to take maximum points from their next three games to be back in the race. We’re two-for-two so far, and other win on Saturday will but us in fine position after the first part of the season. A thumping win on Saturday will convince me that the early losses (on the road) to Lazio and Napoli were just bumps in the road and that we are back to our winning ways. I’m starting to feel good about how things are going this season.

It will be interesting, however, to see how the Great Man plays things this weekend. As everyone who has ever worn the purple knows, we have another little match this coming Tuesday vs. a team called Bayern Munich, which features a former Viola player who still holds a place in many of our hearts. What kind of team will he put out for Reggina, knowing that he really needs a point vs. Bayern after the earlier CL matches were a bit flat? It will be interesting to see. It seems as if the team is fairly close to full strength (apparently no one was hurt at the internationals, thank Christ) so he does have a bit of flexibility. To be fair, most everyone should also be pretty well rested. So we shall see.

Recent Form

Fiorentina: L W L W W

Reggina: D L L L D

Starting Line-Ups (AKA, The Blind Guess Department)

Fiorentina: Frey; Comotto, Dainelli, Gamberini, Vargas; Kuzmanovic, Melo, Montolivo; Santana, Gilardino, Mutu

Reggina: Campagnolo; Alvarez, Cirillo, Valdez, Costa; Vigiani, Barreto, Carmona; Brienza, Di Gennaro; Corradi

Who’s NOT Playing?

Antonio Giosa and Emmanuel Cascione look to be out for Reggina. Martin Jorgensen and Per Kroldrup look iffy for the Viola.

Prediction

Fiorentina is enjoying the home cookin’ this week (presumably wild boar, one of my favorites every time I’m in Tuscany) vs. a feisty but lesser club. I like their chances. A lot. I say the Viola win 3-0.

TV Situation

Here in the states, the match will be televised live at noon on RAI and on tape delay at 4:30 on FSC. (all times EST.)

It’s good to be back, everybody. I missed you guys. Hope all is well and that everybody is looking forward to the weekend. I will be back on Saturday night or Sunday with the recap. Forza Viola!

Vargas’ 180 minutes on a bad ankle this week probably mean Gobbi will play on the left, don’t you think? And do you know something awesome about Mutu’s health the rest of us don’t, or are you just being optimistic? I don’t (yet) believe the Romanian shouts about surgery, but it seems like he and Gila might both be sitting this one out, especially with Looooca and friends looming.

A few of my sources (i.e. random websites I routinely check) suggest Mutu is Ok and wants to play this weekend. I don’t know. As you see from the subheading, they’re just “blind guesses,” and it’s not made any easier by the fact that I write these previews days in advance of the game. For all I know Prands is going to start Batistuta up front and Rui Costa in the hole.

My guess is Mutu and Gilardino are going to be rested ahead of Tuesday. I’d like to see Pazzo up front, Osvaldo with him, and then Jo-Jo just behind them. Gobbi is probably going to be over Vargas (if anything Vargas can be subbed in the last 20 minutes) Its good to be back, even though theres been some really rough reading from the international camps (Kuz to Milan, Prandels to Juve, Osvaldo to anywhere) lets go out and show we are still a unified team!!!

What’s the story with Pasqual? Does Prandelli have a daughter because, if so, Pasqual must have hit that.

Pasqual used to have a rocket of a right foot during the Toni days…now he just sits in the back and can’t even complete a pass anymore.

I hope Mike is right and that Gila and Mutu rest this weekend. It is Reggina afterall — do they even have a point? And unless Prandelli is purposely playing mindgames with Pazzini and Osvaldo, why wouldn’t he start thoe guys? Gila has been starting just about every game and it’s gotta be super frustrating for Pazzo and Osvaldo to see so little time. We need the depth they provide and I’d hate to see them go during the January window.

I don’t think he’s purposely playing mind games with Pazzini. He is with Osvaldo, though. The petition obviously pissed him off.

Sorry, NickyViola, what was the petition? I know Osvaldo’s been whining and hat there have been reports that he’s been moaning in the locker room, but I’m not sure I know about tis exact reference.

nice – although nick sabin said the same thing lol

Prandelli: I Will Not Join Juventus
Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli has distanced himself from joining Juventus and he admits he has no intention of leaving La Viola…

The former Bianconeri man has been heavily linked as an alternative to Claudio Ranieri if he recieves his marching orders from directors at Vinovo.

However, Prandelli has pulled out of the running and he insists he will not join the Old Lady because he wants to see out his contract with the Gigliati first.

“I want to win in Florence,” said the coach.

“Juve? I will not comment on this because I have respect for this city and Fiorentina fans. I have a contract to respect and I want to make this team win and improve.”

The coach then had a few words on the visitors to the Artemio Franchi tomorrow afternoon when Reggina come to town.

“It’s the most important game of the season for us and we want to win it. We have to take three points,” added Prandelli.

“Reggina will fight but we have to be ready. It will not be easy but I want the right spirit from my side.”

I’ll make up for her abject failure to objectify attractive Viola players, Steven: Have you ever seen Vargas without his shirt on? BEST SIGNING EVER.

*coughs* Now, about the football: the squad list for Reginna has been released:

Comotto, Da Costa, Dainelli, Donadel, Frey, Gamberini, Gilardino, Gobbi, Jovetic, Kuzmanovic, Melo, Montolivo, Osvaldo, Papa Waigo, Pasqual, Pazzini, Santana, Storari, Zauri

Semiolli and Kroldrup are officially hurt (Kroldrup was injured in Denmark training), Jorgensen’s only recently released from the hospital, Vargas (as Martha said) played 180 minutes for Peru on a hurt ankle, and Mutu is probably a great deal more hurt than anyone, including himself, is admitting.

I certainly expect Pazzini to start up top instead of Gila; if Prandelli still starts Gila instead after two international games and with Bayern in three days, I will seriously begin to wonder if he’s trying to drive Pazzo away. And I really hope he’s not, because I like Pazzo, and want to see him in purple for many years to come.

Osvaldo I don’t know about, because while he’s probably the natural replacement for Mutu he hasn’t exactly been making friends in the backroom with the way he’s been running off at the mouth lately. I’d like to see him too, because again, I like Osvaldo, and would like to see him stay, but I won’t be surprised if Prandelli decides not playing is appropriate punishment for complaining about not playing.

I’ll give you pretty good odds that Jovetic will start, though.

Papa Waigo is there???? wow…we are digging deep for this one…

I think Osvaldo is demanding more respect, after all, he did beat Juve, and he got us into the Champions League, I really don’t wanna see him go. Plus I met him when I was in Florence this summer, hes a really nice guy.

Hey Nick. Prandelli wanted to sell Osvaldo this past summer but publicly said he wouldn’t after a petition asking that he not be sold was circulated and signed by several thousand Viola fans.
