Following the goalless draw against Steaua Bucharest, Fiorentina’s fans whistled and booed their team off the pitch at the Artemio Franchi stadium. Coach Cesare Prandelli slammed this behaviour in a post-match interview, and praised his team’s spirit.

“We had some difficulties, but we still kept a clean sheet which is important,” he said. “The team showed spirit, this is what’s important for a team to grow.

“Steaua had a better condition than us, but I liked my team’s character and determination. When you play against a team that presses high up the field, it becomes difficult to pass the ball around.

“We tried hard, but often resorted to crosses or long balls to get around them.”

On his late attack-minded changes, bringing in Zdravko Kuzmanovic and Giampaolo Pazzini, Prandelli said: “Fifteen minutes before the end it was right to run a few risks, but Steaua only came close to scoring when we made a mistake in defence. Overall, we had some chances but the daw is the right result.”

On the fans’ reaction after the match, he said: “In three years we have achieved a lot, the club weren’t in the Champions League for eight years, so I believe this team should always be applauded.”
