Good Melo News!
By: Tim | April 29th, 2009Felipe Melo’s 5 game suspension has been reduced to three games! This means that he’ll be available starting with the trip to Catania a week from Sunday. I think the reason the court reduced his suspension was that Melo’s attorneys threatened them with a vicious slide tackle from the Fiorentina midfielder if the suspension wasn’t reduced.
This is fantastic, and obviously I’ve made my bias clear, because he’s arguably been the best player in purple this season. He will be around for the last 4 games, provided he can hold his nerve and not accumulate too many cards in that time.
Also, many thanks to Slakas for the image used in the post. Back to work for me.

Unrelated story: My middle son plays footie on a rec team, and his coach looks like he still plays, sports Adidas Sambas, and generally appears to be a lover of the game.
Anyway, he will be gone this weekend, so I’m taking over the reigns (my football coaching debut, this could be huge). They are 7-year-olds, so it’s just for fun. So I ask the coach, “So what formation do I put them in and how do you handle substitutions?” He says, “Well, I pretty much play everyone at all the positions.” I say, “Sweet, Total Football!” His coach gives me the blank stare. No reaction, nothing. I was all proud to show off my world football chops to a guy I thought was hip. I was expecting a knowing look, a chuckle, SOMETHING! I got nothing. I was…deflated. LOL

Great news! Melo is the man…he has easily become one of my favorites, I love fighting midfielders who actually have decent ball skills to back it up.

in other news, is this news or just bluster
MILAN, April 30 (Reuters) – The Italian soccer league could split in two after a meeting of Serie A and B presidents on Thursday ended without agreement over future financial arrangements.
“We have created a new league for Serie A,” Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini told reporters after the meeting in Milan.
The Italian professional league is made up of the top flight Serie A and the second tier Serie B.
Presidents of second division clubs have been at loggerheads for months with their Serie A counterparts over how wealth is spread within the league. Several Serie B sides have recently encountered financial problems.

Regarding Pazzini’s comments about his time in Florence: Yes, it’s irriting, unprofessional, petty, etc, but really, has anyone earned the right to talk trash about his old team more than he? He had a limited role at Fiorentina, and since he was shipped out, he’s gone absolutely wild. He’s scored at a faster rate at his new club than anyone in Serie A while at Samp. You may not like him (or even want to strangle him), but you gotta tip your hat to his goal scoring run. Who knew he was that good?
Should he keep his mouth shut and act like a professional about it? Probably, but the temptation to gloat is overwhelming for some people, and at this point in his life Pazz doesn’t have the character to resist that temptation. With so much to gloat about, a lot of me-first, pampered athletes in similar situations would likewise be unable to take the high road. That said, I still think he cheapens himself with those comments.
The only comment that I take issue with is that he tries to characterize his role at Fiorentina as being “altruistic,” team first, facilitator, etc. Bullshit. When he was on the pitch, Pazz was squeezing off shots as frequently as Mutu and Gila, guys who were actually putting the biscuit in the basket, unlike Pazz. While it’s true that the attack in Florence did not focus on him and I’m sure that at Samp it does – he cannot with a straight face say that he was Mr. Unselfish at Fiore.
Good luck, Pazz, but shut your pie hole.

Tomas, that is like saying Milan fans should bow down to Gilardino. Let’s face it, maybe he just needed a change of environment but he is also now playing for a team with less pressure considering their current standing,

i dont blame him for gloating.
i would expect nothing else from him, that’s why he’s a fuzz head
he’s a little self absorbed little twit who thinks every thing should be given to him on a silver platter and now that he’s gotten it, he’s going to rub everyone’s nose in it.
he just better hope he keeps it up tho, fame is fleeting in this sport
and also it just would’ve been more prudent to wait until after our fixture, especially with melo coming back
mooowahahahahahahahahahaha

Nolan – I didn’t say we should bow down to Pazz, but that a tip of the hat is not inappropriate. They are not equivalent gestures, my man. I’m just saying you can’t deny he’s been on fire. But since you brought him up, Gila, with the season he’s had, could likewise try to taunt Milan for shipping him out, but to his credit he has not (at least as far as I know). You gotta respect a guy for that, for being professional, for being a man about it. It’s a business after all.

Pazz is one ungrateful fucker, fiorentina made him and were very good to him, and he had all last season to prove how good he was but he flopped big time. He’s only scoring because of cassano’s brilliance. I think cassano will leave samp very soon for a bigger club (juve want him) then we’ll see how well he does. His current scoring rate won’t last very long at all, i’m sure of it.

*staying out of the Pazzo argument because everyone knows where I stand*
I think we need to start donning our distrustful-of-everything-the-media-reports transfer season hats already, especially when it comes to Mutu. We all have been following football long enough to know that 95% of what is reported in the media regarding who is talking about buying who from whom is bullshit. This is going to go double with Mutu, who is a) the player big clubs are most likely going to want from Fiorentina; b) the player probably worth the most to Fiorentina in terms of sheer monetary value; and c) the player most likely to leave out of necessity if the Chelsea extortion ruling goes against him (we just can’t pay him that much). A lot of clubs are going to be nosing around him, and more than that, the media is going to be gleefully making up stories about him (stories about him transferring, I mean, not stories about him knocking up Gambit’s girlfriend). So we shouldn’t be rewriting next season’s roster every time a report appears in the press that Mutu is “on his way to [blank]“.
And that’s probably good to keep in mind when reports about anyone at Fiorentina being on their way anywhere appear, as the long, dull summer comes upon us. Until I hear it out of Corvino’s mouth, and confirmed by Prands and both Della Valles, I’m not believing anything.

PS No one actually believes anything goal.com says, do they? For English-language news of Serie A, C4’s Football Italia page is better, although they still have the distressing habit of reporting rumours like they’re facts.

Channel4 is a little more fair…and they actually check their sources, I like them because its not InterMilanJuveRomacentric…they actually focus on the issues of little teams, and even report Serie B and Lega Pro scores.

And concerning Mutu…its been the same problem with every striker we’ve ever had…Batigol was reportedly on his way out every year he played.

The way I see it, regarding all of these rumors, is that what the hell else are we going to talk about all summer? The window is still closed at this point, and what Fiorentina does this summer regarding the squad will be hugely influenced by whether they can hold onto 4th place. But it is a fact that this summer may be the last time to sell Mutu at a high price, and his durability has been declining the past couple of years. It also feels weird to say at 29, but he’s 30, which is getting a bit long in the tooth for a non-AC Milan player.

fuzz head should take notice.
he’s honest, but he doesnt rip anyone and then goes onto praise the best player on our team.
Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino believes he was undervalued by AC Milan during his three seasons at San Siro as he reflects on his days with Rossoneri.
Gilardino didn’t enjoy the best of times with Milan during his spell there and joined the Viola last year. He has been outstanding this term in Tuscany, but he is still feeling bitter with what happened at San Siro.
“Did I feel undervalued in my last few seasons? I did a little yes, but the numbers are on my side. I won a Champions League and an Intercontinental Cup, but I am disappointed at having been used too little,” Gilardino told Sky Sport Italia.
“However, things have changed this year and I have found trust here which is important for a striker.
“[Adrian] Mutu always says I score great goals, but I am not as classy as he is.”
The hitman has hit 18 goals this season as he chases the Capocannoniere award.

Yes, that’s the way to do it, Gila. Not vindictive, just honest. You can’t begrudge a guy for being disappointed at not getting any PT. EVERYONE wants to contribute, if not get a “leetle taiste of the glory” (to quote Nacho Libre). Plus, he said he benefitted by being at AC Milan, threw them a bone…I think he was honest yet diplomotic, not playing the part of the jilted girlfriend (read: Pazz).
