Halfway through the CL Group Stage, Things are looking good for the Viola

By: Tim | October 21st, 2009

I exchanged emails with Ted earlier, and it turns out that neither of us were able to see much of the match yesterday, so this recap will have to be brief. I did see the highlights last night on FSC, so I’ve seen all of the goals. In a very entertaining and open match, Fiorentina defeated the host Hungarians of Debrecen by a 4-3 margin. Here’s the Football Italia recap.

Group Standings:

Lyon: 9 points, +6
Viola: 6 points, +2
Scousers: 3 points, -2
Debrecen, 0 points, -6

Things are looking very good for our boys at this point. The last 3 matches, in order, are Debrecen at home, Lyon at home and then away to the Scousers. Wins in the next 2 matches would certainly see Fiorentina through to the knock-out phase of the competition, but the most obvious priority at this point has to be beating Debrecen again at home. Let’s face it, they have a few decent players, but they can’t hang with Fiorentina when the Viola are playing anything like thier best game.

Negatives from yesterday:

Up to this point, Fiorentina had neither been scoring nor conceding many goals, no matter what the competition. Debrecen saw this match as an opportunity to go for a win, and they pushed men forward right from the start. It was not ideal to give up 3, though I’m really more angry about the first and the last goals. The second, while Comotto and one other Viola player could have been tighter to that guy, was simply a tremendous shot. Tip your cap to him and move on. But the first and third resulted from NO marking on the first and lax marking on the 3rd, from a set piece towards the end of the match. Concentration needs to remain strong at that point to ensure that no points are given away late in the match.

Positives:

4 goals. 3 points. 2 for Mutu. 1 road win in the Champions League. 0 minutes played so Jo-Jo will be fresh for the Napoli match. Also, Bassy was sharp and kept the boys in the match as usual. Sharper than Iker Casillas and Dida from what I hear. I’ll take it.

Also, I’ve been thinking this for awhile, but haven’t said it, but Dainelli has been playing pretty well. I’m concerned because in the linked recap it mentioned that he left in the 55th minute with a fitness issue. If he can stay relatively healthy and Prandelli only uses him for 1 match a week, I think he can be pretty effective. Between Natali (didn’t see him play at all yesterday), Kroldrup and the baby Argentine Christmas present who arrives in January, hopefully Cesare can get some results and some solidity at the back.

Plus, Santana had a chance to score and he didn’t mess it up, so nice work on that one Mario! Still, please stay late after practice and work on your shooting.

Also, this is a game that Fiorentina would have lost or drawn last year. I’m not sure if what has been happening is down to experience, improved confidence, the emergence of Jo-Jo, the addition of the level-headed Zanetti instead of the batshit insane Melo, or what, but I do like it. Cesare seems to think that the team is getting its swag right. I’ll agree with the Great Man.

Looking Ahead:

The matches start coming up quick for the Viola now, with 5 more before the next international break. Sunday sees the boys home to Napoli, next Wednesday is away to Genoa, 11/1 will be home to Catania, 11/4 Debrecen come to Firenze and then 11/8 is away to Udinese. Cesare will have to be smart about keeping his players fresh, but there should be plenty for us to talk about.

More Friday about the Napoli match. Until then.

Genoa is getting trashed and Roma missed a penalty. What is with the weight of Italy’s European hopes resting on our shoulders? As much as I like everyone being forced to acknowledge how awesome Fiorentina are, I do wish we weren’t carrying the burden of Italy’s UEFA co-efficient alone.

And David Villa got red-carded. Probably for eating someone. Strange as it might seem, I really adore that man.

Well, Werder drew and Hertha lost, so Germany’s co-efficient didn’t get a tremendous boost from this round. And Bayern and Stuttgart both lost, and Wolfsburg drew, so they’re not doing too hot in the CL, either. Germany’s the one we have to worry about taking Italy’s fourth CL spot away.

Roma equalize in the death of stoppage. I was following along with their offside blog and before that goal everyone had given up after the penatly miss and then after the goal everyone suddenly regained hope of a draw haha.

How can you not adore David Villa? I’m a hetereosexual man whose Spanish club of choice is Barca, and I’m still basically in love with Villa.

So yeah, is everyone finally realizing that Fiorentina kicks ass? I like to pretend Zanetti and not Marchionni was part of the Melo deal, because it really makes us sound like we ripped Juve off.

I agree – it’s odd that The Yellow Submarine is getting thumped “by all comers,” as slakas says. Villareal are stone dead last in the La Liga table. Amazing.

It’s the wonderful way in which he attempts to break the kneecaps of everyone taller than him, Nolan. You can’t help but love someone who is just that fierce.

Melo’s really not settled in at Juve yet, is he? Ah well, at least he’s pulling that massive salary Fiorentina wouldn’t give him.

I just read what i wrote earlier, and I’d just like to clear up that I’m not an idiot i swear, haha. What I said made it sounded like i think Belgium is the same as the Netherlands. I thought slakas thought they were Dutch, so my bad haha. Sorry for the off topicness.

How long do we have Zanetti for? 1 or 2 years?

“Nolan? Zanetti for 1 mil isn’t ripping Juve off?”

Either way it was a fantastic deal, it’s just people thought it was the end of the world when we sold Melo despite Melo being an immature mercenary who did nothing to improve us.

Nolan – that’s unfair on Melo. I’ll agree that his actions this summer were geared solely to cashing in on his excellent season last year at Fiorentina.

However, his contributions were crucial, especially considering his role in the fact that Fiorentina gave up only 35 goals last season in Serie A, behind only Inter. Up to this point, our boys are tied for the best defensive record with Bari and Inter.

I think Zanetti’s experience and ball retention have paid big dividends this year – especially in the CL matches. Melo is not nearly as experienced of a player, and I think he showed that in last year’s CL matches and in the fact that he’s made several big errors at Newcastle this season.

Opinion question/answer…do u think juve would get 25 million for melo at the end of this season? or does it look like we got the better half of this deal

That’s a good question Mike. I mean, Melo is 26 (27 in June) so he’s got several years to be at top level. If we’re talking right now, today, I’d say that it would be tough to get that price again.

But, what happens if he’s in the first 11 of the WC-winning Brazil squad next summer. He’s starting right now for Dunga and it is always a chance that Brazil will win.

I think Corvino did very well to get 23 million Euros plus Zanetti for him. I’d have to say its unlikely, but possible, that more would be on the table after this season.

Told you guys Zanetti was class…and Marchionni for 4.5mil isn’t a bad deal. Once he gets some consistency in him, he’ll produce better.

To say that Melo did nothing to make us better is a bit of a hyperbole. Let’s be honest. He was good last campaign. The tifosi practically rioted when he was sold to Inter. Part of that reaction was because of where he was dealt, but there is no reaction at all if he truly sucked. He was good, better than he’s playing right now. That said, let’s hope he remains in a funk.

Goal.com predicts a 2-2 draw with Napoli. Rubbish. I say 2-0 or 3-1 to the good.

i like marchionni’s defense and i like the way he presses forward with the ball, but his crosses are 80% merda

ok, here’s what the confusion was

the third lille goal was scored by Hazard and the announcer shouted out “he’s the king of belgian football”
    (because he’s from belgium)

it all went downhill from there

odds for betting are based on the moves by the betting public. the betting houses want to make money solely on the juice, so when more people bet fiorentina to win, the draw and napoli to win odds move to be more attractive. so in a way, gambling odds are like a huge poll. i think its really cool, but i’m a total stats nerd.
