Late Inter Preview

By: Tim | March 15th, 2009

Another Sunday, another massive game for our Viola. I waited to put this up until all the other games were complete, so we could really see what the importance of the match would be. Genoa got a win yesterday, Milan thrashed Siena away, and our boy Giampaolo Pazzini’s double held Roma to only one point. Here’s the current table, showing us level on 46 points with Roma and 2 back of Genoa in 4th. Obviously 3 points would be pretty nice, and the challenge of playing Inter at the San Siro is even tougher when you consider the home defeat against Palermo last week.

Let’s talk about the opponents for a minute. Who knows what we’re going to get from Inter, honestly. They put forth a decent effort at Old Trafford on Wednesday, but it was obvious over the 2 legs that Man U were the better team. Mourinho was brought in to get them to advance in the champions league, rumors are heating up that he’s on the way to either Man City or Real Madrid, and all of these things might be combining to create a distraction for the Inter players. Plus, Fiorentina played Inter well at the Artemio Franchi in December, holding out for a 0-0 draw. And they’re still 4 points clear at the top over Juve.

Viola News

Obviously, this has been a week of soul searching for Fiorentina. Prandelli worked hard to build up the confidence of the team. Fiorentina need their swag back, and this game is the perfect opportunity to do it. Bassy’s not scared. The Gila Monster is ready to go. The fans appear to have switched their tone from overly negative to a stronger show of support. I’m fired up – this is a huge game and I think the team will be ready.

Lineups aka Blind Guess Dept.

For Fiorentina, no major injuries or suspensions will limit Prandelli’s choices. I think Cesare’s going to go back to the 4-3-1-2 with Old Man Jorgensen as the trequartista.

Bassy; Commotto, Gamberini, Dainelli, Pasqual; Donadel, Melo, Monto; Jorgensen; Gila Monster, Mutu.

For Inter, I’m going to take it from Goal. All I know is that they are weak in the center of defense due to injuries. Gila Monster and Mutu need to get on that.

Julio Cesar; Maicon, Samuel, Cordoba, Santon; Muntari, Cambiasso, Zanetti; Stankovic; Adriano, Ibrahimovic.

TeeVee?

2 weeks in a row! The game starts at 3:30 pm EST and will be broadcast on FSC.

Prediction

I’m always the optimist. I think we got this one – Fiorentina have all of the results in front of them and know what is required. I’m going to go 2-1. A goal from the ugly guy with the big nose for the bad guys, and, who else, Mutu and Gila moster for the good guys. Forza viola! I’m going to have to watch on DVR but I’ll check back to see what everyone thinks later on tonight.

I could have done without the second goal.

We played well, and if it hadn’t been for that missed cross from Mutu I’d say we deserved a draw.

    - Wasn’t my man Melo’s best day, but he does have more technical skills than I gave him credit for.
    - Damn it, we outplayed them today. We did. But, and we’ve talked about it before when we were on the winning side – good teams find a way to get it done when they’re not at their best. Inter did that to us today.
    - Bassy botched the first set piece, although in his defense he clears that ball 19 out of 20 times. It was unlucky that it hit Ibra and he just nodded it in at about 3 miles an hour.
    - We blew too many chances today, particulary Mutu. The first one was the worst – he chips that ball most times over the keeper, but he tried to go low. The second one was at a much tougher angle, but still it was a great chance. I didn’t like Gila sitting in front of the goal after that, complaining that he didn’t get the cross. I don’t like one teammate showing up another, not to mention he was marked pretty well.
    - Can they take ANY cosolation in that was their best all around game in what, 6 weeks? Longer? I hope they can.

    our fans aren’t passionate enough:

BAGHDAD (AP)—Police say an Iraqi soccer player has been shot dead just as he was about to kick what could have been the tying goal in a weekend game south of Baghdad.

Police Maj. Muthanna Khalid says a striker from the Buhairat amateur team was facing only the goalie during a Sunday match in Hillah when a supporter of the rival Sinjar club shot him in the head in the final minute of play.

Sinjar was leading 1-0 when the shooting occurred. Khalid said a spectator was arrested.

ouch. the beckhams needs some cheering up:

ROME (AFP) – AC Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati has been sidelined for the rest of the season after suffering a freak knee injury in the opening minutes of Sunday’s 5-1 Serie A rout of Siena.

In a statement on Monday Milan said Abbiati would undergo an operation on his right knee in the coming weeks, thus ruling him out for the rest of the season.

Milan, who are third in Serie A but 12 points behind leaders Inter Milan and five behind Juventus, said the “complexity” of Abbiati’s injury meant he would need three weeks of rehab before going under the knife.

Brazilian keeper Dida, who has been Milan’s number two since the start of the season, will step up in place of Abbiati, who injured his knee in a clash with teammate Giuseppe Favalli.

carton of smokes and a hershey bar

    another pertinent (sorta) owie

MUNICH, Germany (AFP) – Germany striker Miroslav Klose will be sidelined for “six to eight weeks” following an operation on his injured right ankle, his club Bayern Munich said on Monday.

After sustaining ligament damage at the weekend, Klose went under the knife in Switzerland. As he does not need to wear a plaster-cast, he can begin rehab immediately, said the German champions.

The German championship does not finish until May 23 but Klose will miss the lion’s share of the race for the Bundesliga title, as well as Bayern’s quarter-final clashes in the Champions League.

It means Bayern have lost another top player following injuries to Luca Toni (Achilles tendon) and French midfielder Franck Ribery (tibia). Lukas Podolski, who is soon set to rejoin FC Cologne, is currently Bayern’s only available striker.

Klose should also be sidelined for Germany’s World Cup qualifiers against Liechtenstein on March 28 and Wales on April 1.

That could prove problematic for Germany as Klose, with 44 goals in 88 matches, is Germany’s top goalscorer still in activity.
