My Main Man Melo beats down Lopez, both banned 5 matches

By: Tim | April 14th, 2009

So I just recently noticed in the comments that the Italian league handed down its decision. The resulting 5 game ban is much worse than we feared when this story first came out after the match on Saturday. I actually cursed a little too loud at my desk, prompting my annoying and overly nosy colleague to ask me if everything was ok. I made up some excuse to get her off her back, but Cesare Prandelli must be holed up in his office trying to figure out how to address this issue.

The Great Man’s Options:

Ok, so Cesare has been shifting his formation this season, based on availability of players. There have been variations on a 4-3-3, a 4-3-1-2 and a 4-4-2. Either way, I’m going to take a stab at 2 ways Fiorentina can lineup their 6 attacking players for Sunday’s away match with Udinese. For both, I’m assuming that Pasqual has nailed down the LB spot, and that both Prandelli and Vargas are open to the Peruvian being deployed in midfield.

Choice 1:

4-3-1-2: Bassy; Back 4; Kuz, Donadel, Monto; Old Man Jorgensen; Jo-Jo, Gila.

Choice 2:

4-4-2; Bassy; Back 4; Kuz, Donadel, Monto, Vargas; Jo-Jo, Gila.

Choice 3:

4-3-1-2: Bassy, Back 4; Kuz, Donadel, Vargas; Monto; Jo-Jo, Gila.

Personally, I lean towards choice 1 for the following reasons. Jorgensen is an excellent, creative and massively experienced player. Donadel is a battler who will be equal to Melo in terms of breaking up the opposition play and his spirit will be an important inclusion in the fight for 4th place. Also, his assist on Vargas’ goal aginst Cagliari showed that he has at least some abilities going forward, even if they pale in compairson to Melo’s. Plus, Monto has not fared well when he’s been deployed further forward, making me think he’s not the best choice for the trequartista position. Of course, this assumes that Jorgensen is fit enough to play from the start of the game, which is far from likely considering his limited minutes this season.

Challenge to the Viola Midfield

As my buddy Paul likes to say, illregardless of what Prandelli decides for the lineup, some players are going to need to step up. For me, I’m looking to Kuz and Monto to take more of the responsibility on their shoulders. Melo has been the only Viola midfielder this year who has been consistently good. Without him for at least the next few games, Kuz and Monto are going to need to provide service to the forward and/or get a couple in the back of the net themselves. Otherwise, there may be no Champions League football for the Viola next season.

Forza Viola and go ahead and start disagreeing with my lineups in the comments. Or, we can just commiserate about punk ass Uruguayans baiting my Main Man Melo into a fight in the bowels of the Stadio Artemio Franchi. Also, if anyone has any insight on the appeals process, please let us know. Thanks.

This self-defense angle being thrown up by Fiorentina can’t be new info, right? Didn’t the powers that be already know all the facts before slapping homeboy with a 5-matcher? I struggle to believe that when presented with this appeal they’d say, “No shit? He was acting in self-defense? Well, damn, why didn’t someone bring that up before!? In that case it’s all good, fellas. Nice beat down, Melo. Peace.”

If we actually finish the season with European qualification, then we might as well aim to win the scudetto next year.

no, i doubt italy loses a spot. a lot of that talk centered around bayern munich going farther than they did.

even if they give chermany another slot, it’ll come from somewhere else.

there’s a lot of other spots out there they can give to germany.

portugul, scotland, and greece all have two, none of those leagues deserve two

I don’t see why the heat is coming down on Seria A so soon. Didn’t Milan win the damn thing only 2 years ago?

If you look at the last 6 finals, here is how the leagues did with respect to getting a team to the finals:

    England: 5 finals appearances
    Italy: 4 finals appearances
    Spain: 1 finals appearance
    Portugal: 1 finals appearance
    France: 1 finals appearance

Before cutting one of Seria A’s spots so quickly, you would think there would be a period of probation or something. I don’t think Italy will lose a spot.

    naw

still not worried. there’s a large point gap there.

one cherman team will bow out as they’re paired in the next round and the ukranian squads look better than either of them anyways (i watched three matches on tivo last night lol)

    Fiorentina: STEVAN JOVETIC

‘Jo-Jo’ has finally broken his duck and is confident there will be plenty more to come in the final games of the season. The Montenegrin netted his first goal for the club against Atalanta this month and, in Mutu’s absence, his contribution will be crucial in coming weeks.

Mario Alberto Santana has been missing from the Fiorentina line-up since February, when he badly injured his knee, forcing him to miss the remainder of the season from that point.

According to the latest reports, his operation was a success, and his current rehabilitation program is coming along quicker than expected, so all is well for the player at present.

“Everything is good at the moment. I’m starting to run again, but the road to recovery
is still a very long one,” Santana told the press.

“My goal is to return for the club’s summer retreat in July.

“The injury I suffered came at the worst possible time, as I had been playing well and on a consistent basis back then. Now it’s time to start all over again.

“It’s just apart of the game in my eyes, and I am confident of getting back to my best under [Cesare] Prandelli, who has reinvented me in a new role.”

Fiorentina will travel to Friuli this weekend to take on Udinese as they continue their pursuit for a top-four spot.
