Neapolitans in Town
By: Tim | October 23rd, 2009
So, the team eager to announce its arrival this season with a big hollywood-style unveiling organized by owner Aurelio De Laurentiis comes to the Franchi on Sunday. You know, the “sleeping giant” everyone wants to see towards the top of the Serie A standings. Maybe to break the dominance of the Roman and Northern sides, maybe because of Diego Maradona nostalgia, or maybe because they just want to see something different this season. Whatever the reason, these guys stink right now, and have not even come close to living up to expectations. They’re already on their second manager, having moved from a guy who was a failure at the helm of the Azzurri to a guy who has never managed better than a 6th placed finish and would probably have to consider his finest achievement as a manager to be avoiding relegation with lowly Reggina for 3 consecutive seasons. So why am I a bit nervous about this match?
I’d like to be fully confident in the Viola taking home all 3 available points on Sunday, but for some reason I’m petrified of a letdown. Even though Napoli have lost to every decent team they’ve faced up to this point {Palermo (giving them credit as being decent even though I’m not sure that’s the case), Genoa, Inter and Roma}. Even though Napoli’s only result against a half decent team was a 0-0 with Udinese. Even though Napoli’s only wins are against relegation fodder (Siena, Bologna and Livorno). Even though they’ve lost every single away match.
I guess I’m worried because we know that Quagliarella can score from anywhere. Also, they’ got Lavezzi and Hamsik, who, despite their penchant for losing passports and god-awful tattoos, are the exact kind of short, pacy, shifty and creative players that could give Fiorentina’s defense fits. Plus, there’s the fact that Fiorentina played a difficult away CL match in Budapest on Tuesday while Napoli were able to stay home, rest, train and try and figure out what the hell their new manager wants out of them.
Viola News:
Nothing major is happening with the Viola. Marchionni is still out, and I’m not sure if Dainelli will be ready to go from the start. Also, we’re likely to see Mutu start on the bench due to the need to rotate the squad and the fact that he went the full 90 for the first time in quite a while in Budapest. Also, Jo-Jo is rested and ready to go. Its also possible that Gobbi may get a start on the left sided attacking role since Vargas may need a rest as well. I’m hoping he starts because Napoli’s recent switch from a 3-5-2 to a 4-4-2 leads me to believe that they’ll still be vulnerable down the flanks. And we all know that Vargas is our best way to take advantage of that. Also, I think its time for LDS at RB.
Lineups, aka Blind Guess Dept.
Viola: 4-2-3-1: Bassy; LDS, Gamberini, Kroldrup, Gobbi; Zanetti, RickyMonty; Santana, Jo-Jo, Vargas; Gila Monster.
Napoli: From Football Italia: De Sanctis; Campagnario, Rinaudo, Contini; Maggio, Gargano, Cigarini, Hamsik, Aronica; Quagliarella, Denis.
TeeVee:
The match begins at 10 am EST Sunday morning, on account of the Europeans changing their clocks earlier than we do. Unfortunately for Serie A fans, FSC is airing the Scousers against Man U at that time, so we’ll be scouring for internet streams.
Prediction Time:
Despite my aforementioned apprehensions, Fiorentina are plainly the better team. I’m going for a 3-1 victory with goals from Jo-Jo, Gila and Vargas. I see Quagliarella getting one as well.

That reminds me, that Ujfalusi guy has an uncanny resemblance to David Gilmour.

Frey does not need a hair cut. His hair is second only to his amazing goal keeping skills.

We have two days to mourn… if all goes well in two days, that is.
Have we played Castillo? Would be good if we have some good replacement strikers.

Maybe ADV is bad luck?

Come to think of it, there were no victories in the last three Serie-A games… That explains how Milan catches us up.
To be fair, there were Lazio and Juventus. But then again, came Napoli. I mean Napoli.

things are not that bad. the team is simply mentally exhausted after the frenetic game with debrecen. we will bounce back soon.

It’s not just Debrecen. The boys have been playing a lot of games between league fixtures, CL fixtures, and international fixtures. It doesn’t help that, as the only Italian club succeeding in the Champions’ League, there’s a whole lot of focus on them. That’s got to be exhausting. I’m just praying that we get to the winter transfer window intact.

And why would there be three fixtures in a week again? That + international week + CL = energy drain.

Iaquinta is out with a knee injury. That is tough for him and Juve but thankfully Italy have already qualified for the world cup because then Gila would be expected even more to be the scoring threat for the national team making him more gassed.

You really need to stop blaming mutu/gila/jojo, it’s the lack of service to these guys that’s worrying. Yes our defence is bad, but our midfield is even worse, every game we get over-run in midfield. As a result, the defence is more exposed, and our attack get’s nothing from them also, apart from vargas’s crosses from the left. Monto out, donadel in… You listening prandelli? And how about ledesma in january as a permanent change?

when, if ever, does it become prandelli’s deficiency? we score in CL against teams that are tactically less astute, but in the domestic league, we cant put up the numbers.

It’s all about the depth. We have just enough quality at the top to be competitive in either Serie A or the Champions’ League, but not both. This is being painfully exposed. Hopefully it will lead to reinforcements (Ledesma would be nice) across the board in the coming months. Also, where the hell is Nacho? Sure, he’s not going to be a star, but let’s at least see the guy.

The problem with our midfield all season has been Montolivo. I know we all want to see him make it, but he’s not suited for the deep midfield, he’s willing to work hard but he’s not a particularly good defender; Zanetti is a much more capable playmaker in the deep role and Donadel offers more protection and strength. Ledesma would fit in the 4-2-3-1 nicely.

Admittedly, I didn’t catch the game, but really guys, was it THAT bad? Good teams have tired sub-par games. Napoli is a hugely talented squad even though underachievers. If we don’t get 4 of 6 points against Genoa and Udinese (tough games), maybe the hand-wringing can legitimately begin, but this all seems a bit overwrought.

it could have been worse…….Frey literally had about 7 great saves

I agree. The thought of 2 or 3 points of out four games is quite depressing.

Link of the day: River Plate’s Diego Buonanotte is linked to Fiorentina, Juve, and Napoli.
As a River Plate fan let me tell you, I’m a big fan, he’s brilliantly skilled, but he’s also frustrating inconsistent. I’m talking Monty style frustration, where you see the talent but it fails to produce reliable efficiency. As skilled as he is, at River he has been at times as frustrating as Monty and Santana are for la Viola. Granted River is in much worse shape than we are, so with less pressure he might be more able to perform. He’s also 5′2″, and while Argentine is known for producing very small and very good players, this is 3″ smaller than Maradona and 5″ smaller than Messi we are talking about.
File this one under not happening.
