Old Pal Pazz Hits the Road

By: Ted | January 15th, 2009

I only have a few minutes today, but I wanted to officially report, “Fiorentina Offside” style, that my man Giampaolo Pazzini has been sold to Samp. In return we apparently got 9 million Euros for him, as well as a season-long loan of Emiliano Bonazzoli that includes an option to buy. Thus we get a decent player and some dough in return for a kid who, a few years ago, was thought of as one of the up-and-coming strikers in all of Italy.

Generally, most Viola fans wish Pazzini the best of luck. At least as long as that luck doesn’t interfere with our luck, anyway. Pazzini always struck me as a team player, a good kid, and a guy who hustled and wanted to do well for the team. Whenever he missed a chance to score (which was uncomfortably frequent this season) you could see the look of pain and embarrassment on his face as plain as day. Many think he will be rejuvenated by playing with Sampdoria, particularly as he will be fed by nutty ole’ Antonio Cassano. That surely won’t hurt him, but I also think Pazzini was a player that thrived on confidence, and playing for a new club that obviously believed in him should help him almost as much.

As for Bonazzoli, well, I don’t know too much about him. I watched him play for Samp a few times but didn’t think much either way. He can play in the hole behind Gila, so apparently he could start this weekend, and he knows the Great man and his system fairly well since he played with him at Parma. We shall see, I guess, how he does this weekend.

I should be back tomorrow for a preview of an odd game; apparently Fiorentina is going to play David Beckham in a football match. One would assume our highly skilled team could defeat a single man in a football game, but that would enormously underestimate Beckham’s magnificent and sublime skills. No word yet on whether the Beckham’s will actually field 10 other players to assist their star man as he defeats us single-handedly, but I expect not.

One final note; this week is the one-year anniversary of me writing for the offside. That doesn’t really look that impressive in print, but you have to remember that you measure offside years in dog years, so it seems like seven years. But it seems like seven fun ones.

Hey Ted, Anthony here from the Sevilla offside and just wanted to ask a quick question. There’s rumours floating around Spain that your Senegalese striker Papa Waigo could be on his way to AndalucĂa sometime in the January transfer window. Do you know anything about this? And is he any good? We’re currently lacking goals for and we need another option to turn to. If you know anything about this or can tell me anything about him drop me a line at the Sevilla page. Gracias.

Last spring I had a couple of dreams in which I watched Fiorentina. This team had a young African midfielder playing down the left. He didn’t look like anything special, but he looked… useful. He was named Papa Waigo. But I don’t believe he exists in real life.

I don’t know how the Seville papers became privy to my dreams. Must be some kind of secret CIA technology they’ve got hold of.

    Corvino is getting scary…

He wants to sell Osvaldo, Semioli, and Papa Waigo

that leaves our attack made up of Mutu, Gila, Jo-Jo, and Bonazzoli…and Bonazzoli isn’t eligible to play in the UEFA Cup…are we thinking clearly here?

Is there financial trouble after all? We should keep Ozzy until the end of the season, especially if Mutu is injured, and while the other two aren’t exactly secret weapons it’s nice to have an alternative to Santana and Jo-Jo on the right.

I’m also confused as to why everyone we are linked at is a midfielder, when it’s the place where we already have the most options.

Anthony – the peanut gallery didn’t exactly answer your question about “Cool” Papa Waigo. Yes, the cat’s got much game, in addition to one of the best goal celebrations in Europe. However, as you’ve deduced from the toungue-in-check comments, he hasn’t played this year. When Mutu was hurt last year, and Papa was reluctantly pressed into service, he impressed. Hell, it seemed he was the only guy who could score for us. He also played very well in helping La Viola defeat Juve last year. We have been wondering on this blog, even hoping, that we’d see some of him this year, although we are not hoping to see as much of him during his post-game celebrations.

yeah, papa waigo is young, has a lot of pontential, but hasnt played a lick and I would wonder how much he could contribute right away to any squad, but he’s got to play to get better, I guess.

anyways, he’s no beckham. guess ted is right, 11-1

CARNAGO, Italy (AP)—David Beckham will start in his San Siro debut for AC Milan on Saturday against Fiorentina.

“Beckham will play from the first minute,” Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said in his weekly news conference Friday at Milan’s training center.

Beckham also started his first official game with Milan last weekend, playing 89 minutes in a 2-2 draw at AS Roma.

The former England captain is on loan for two months from the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Beckham is hoping to stay in shape during the MLS offseason and maintain his spot on England’s national team under coach Fabio Capello.

Ancelotti said he was pleased with Beckham’s performance against Roma.

ps i hear that mutu may be back sooner that originally expected, so perhaps we don’t have an issue in front after all.

pps most of the stories linking us with midfielders are garbage. corvino will do what corvino does and i doubt that goal.com or that ilk even has the slightest inkling of what that might be. personally i think we need defenders more than anything

Thanks Tomas, from the way you described him I’d love to see him in Sevilla. I guess just wait it our and hope for the best. We need some goals, that’s all I know.. If he can provide them and is willing to join us (of course if a deal can be struck) then I’m happy.
