Palermo 1 – Fiorentina 3: The Hand of Gila
By: Ted | October 26th, 2008
Not only is the title of the post a lame pun, but it was used by goal.com before I was able to get it down on paper. For family reasons I recorded the game and didn’t watch it until about four hours after the match had been played. Thus, by the time the game was over, all of the reports had been filed, and I am left looking like a plagiarist. I assure you I did come up with “The Hand of Gila” during the match, even if it is a bit obvious. (Channel Four had “Gila Hands Fiorentina Win” which sounds like something Dr. Evil might say with his pinky finger on his lips.)
Anyway, the big talking point will be Gila’s handball, which opened up the scoring. And yes, if anyone is looking for the Viola fan’s perspective, I do of course admit it was a handball, just as Gila and the Great Man did after the match. But I also buy Gila’s excuse that he was pushed in the back and was falling down and did it unintentionally. I also am willing to buy that the shove was probably a penalty, even if it likely would not have been called. Anyway, these things even out over the season, as we all know. Little consolation for the Palermo fan, but it feels pretty good to root for Fiorentina right now.
Since my son went to bed before I watched the match, I was able to watch the game the old-school way and took about three pages of notes detailing the action. But honestly, over the last few weeks I have grown to like the format of bullet points marking my broader thoughts about the game, and so I am going to continue to use it here. Those looking for a more traditional match recap that simply describes the action have a number of good sites to go to that don’t need to be listed here.
• Aside from the handball Gila played very well today. His pass to Adi for the second goal was sublime, and he created a sense of danger every time he was in the box. In spite of the controversy he is now the leading scorer in Series A and has scored more goals than he did all of last season. He’s easily the buy of the summer in Italy.
• Mutu was great today, the man of the match, as he both crossed and scored with seeming ease. That is the Mutu that Roma wanted this summer and in fact so desperately needs now. Much has been made of his propensity to act like a prima-dona and his supposed “jealousy” of Gila, but they seem to be connecting as if they have been playing together for years. Between them they could have had three more goals.
• Longtime readers know of my thoughts on Santana, and my much more recent wish is to see Jovetic play in every game. Mario played well today, I admit; however, I was struck by the fact that his game is sometimes nearly perfect excepting the all-important final ball; whether it is a shot or a pass, that is where his talent seems to fail him. That’s what I noticed again today. He deserves credit for his important role in a big win, but I am still backing the kid to take his job.
• Donadel played in place of Melo today, and for much of the game was superb. However, he had two bad giveaways (one in particular in the 27th) that almost lead to a goal. If he hadn’t been saved by the defense, no one would remember his solid play and only the terrible mistakes. He needs to be more careful distributing the ball in those tight situations.
• On the whole the defense played well. They continue to have trouble with sidepieces, and I wish Gamberini had stayed closer to home on the lone goal the Viola conceded. But Palermo is a good team and, on the whole, they played well, even after Kroldrup came on for an injured Dainelli. And, as the announcer on FSC kept saying, Vargas played his defensive role very well this evening. Perhaps after his shocker last week he’ll now begin to come around. Perhaps he was inspired by his old derby opponents. I don’t know, but I like what I saw.
• Bassy is the best goalkeeper in Italy. I have said it many times and I’m just saying it again. Here’s tonight’s evidence. Towards the end of the match (I didn’t write down the time but it was around the 85th minute or so) a tricky cross was lobbed into the box, the kind that always causes ‘keepers problems. Bassy punched it out weekly, which led to another goal-scoring opportunity. I think he should have caught the ball, and could have done so. In other words, I think Bassy made a mistake. And it just shocked me. Shocked me. When you are looking slack-jawed in amazement because your ‘keeper has actually made a minor error, you know you have a pretty good goalkeeper.
Anyway, we have now won four on the trot in Series A, and sit a point out of first in the league. I am starting to feel pretty good about this team. And of course I know Inter is coming to town this week. You know what? Bring ‘em on! We’ve got to play them sometime, and I don’t care if Jose threw a hissy fit today because his boys played to a goalless draw. Bring ‘em on. Bring on Inter. We are Fiorentina, and we are waiting.
Forza Viola.

Huge win for us. Inter would be even more huge. Time to put those asses in crisis mode.

Ted, you are right about Gila and Mutu. They could have had well more than 3 goals between them. Particularly in the second half, Mutu had a number of stunning crosses that Gila couldn’t quite reach, and then there was the time that Almiron went “for he glory” when he had Mutu wide open on the flank. Could have been 5-1 or 6-1 if la Viola had made all of their opportunities. Not to complain, mind you…..

oh I think the hand was intentional, lol
but I also think all the tugging and grabbing and shirt pulling that wasn’t being called the whole match was also intential
AND I also think la viola would’ve crushed Palermo eventually regardless of how the first goal was scored
I didn’t get to see the CL match, so I didn’t get to see the comparison, but I think Vargas did a great job defensively yesterday
The announcer said it best.
“How can Frey not be playing for france”idiocy, that’s how
did i hear that right, Fiorentina had not won in Palermo since the 60s? that’s awesome

I agree Santana is a hard worker and can make things happen for the other forwards, but compared to the pure talents Osvaldo, Jovetic, and Pazzini (a great finisher despite what many say) he just doesn’t seem to fit. Does Prandelli think that Osvaldo or Jovetic with Mutu and Gila is too much?

i think that Mr Prandelli thinks jovetic too young to play full time YET, but ultimately who knows.
and i think osvaldo would be playing more except for whatever is going on off field.
Pazzini needs to STAY ONSIDE
and i think you really need them all to contribute and quit whining, although if we wash out of the CL then playing time will become even more of a premium

The handball was intentional…he propelled it into the net
However, the referee blew the call…But I agree, no reason to cry like a little romanista bitch, this usually evens out throughout the season

2 game ban for it tho.
DAMNMILAN, Oct 27 (Reuters) – Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino has been banned for two matches for scoring a goal with his arm in Sunday’s 3-1 win at Palermo, the Italian league said on Monday.
The league’s sporting judge said in a statement that after reviewing television evidence, it was clear the Italy forward had deliberately used his arm when he slid in for the opening goal in the 19th minute.
The statement said the act was punishable because it was “serious unsporting conduct”.
Palermo were furious that the goal was allowed to stand and even more livid that Gilardino ran away to celebrate.
“Gilardino deserves a five-game ban. He even celebrated, incredible,” the Sicilian side’s president Maurizio Zamparini told reporters before the announcement.
Former AC Milan forward Gilardino, top scorer in Serie A this term with seven goals, will miss Wednesday’s home game with champions Inter Milan and next Sunday’s match at Siena.
Post-match use of video evidence often leads to soccer players being banned for bad tackles or violent incidents which were missed by the referee. However, it is rare to punish a player for handball using replays.

Justice is served..In his time off, maybe he needs to enroll in some fair play classes

Well I guess that’s fair. Good thing Mutu seems to have regained his stride because goals against Inter are going to have to come from somewhere. Pazzini will have to play well (which he is capable of) and I wouldn’t mind a little bit of Osvaldo or Jovetic. I’d also like to take this opportunity to call out the midfielders – besides one goal from Kuz in the league this year, all the goals have been scored by Pazzini, Mutu and Gila. We’re waiting, Montolivo …

I can’t say Gila won’t be missed, but the ban is completely fair. Intentional or not, it was a handball.
Now Pazzo and JJ (and, like tmc said, the midfielders) have to step up. As much as utterly despise Mourinho, Inter is going to be a tough one. I have no doubt that we’re capable of it, but we really, really have to remember how to finish.

Well, here’s the 11 I’d like to see on Wednesday.
Frey
Vargas, Gamberini, Kroldrup, Commotto
Montolivo-Melo-Donadel
Mutu-Pazzini-Osvaldo(or Jovetic – I can’t decide)Posted from

Damn…
Good luck against Inter w/o Gila Monster.Posted from

I sincerely hope you guys will bring down Inter on Wednesday. I think Pazzini will make full advantage of his chance to shine.

I’d find a spot for Osvaldo in this one. He’s too good in big matches to leave on the bench. Maybe a diamond 4-4-2…

Gila’s suspension is rediculous.
Terrible precident.

Who would have guessed such a thing would happen before the Inter game?
Terrible precedent, at least Pazzini/Osvaldo/Jovetic will be fired up, knowing one of them could be a hero.

interesting…
Inter President Massimo Moratti believes that La Viola will be successful in their quest to overcome the suspension, as he has publically stated that, “Gilardino will be there Wednesday night.”
“I am convinced that Gilardino will not miss the Fiorentina-Inter match, as the disciplinary commission will reconsider their decision,” believed Moratti.
“They will come to realize that suspending the player is not the right decision. In a situation like this, the officials should have just cancelled the goal, and so it is not the player’s fault,” he added.

Nolan, I dont think it will take a hero. Inter effectively have no midfield. Yep, every single one of them but Dacourt and a primavera player is injured. Fiorentina could probably use this game as a rest for some of their starting 11 and it still wouldn’t matter.
There is talk of Chivu in the midfield. I am beginning to loose hope.

EVERY SINGLE NAME IN ITALIAN FOOTBALL IS SUPPORTING GILA!
Lippi, Ancelotti, Moratti, Galliani, Mourinho, Spaletti, and Matarasse are all saying that the suspension is unfair

(not sure of the reliablity of the report)
The court had ruled in favour of a two game suspension for the Italian international on Monday when sporting judge Gianpaolo Tosel dished out the punishment.Fiorentina wasted no time in appealing and both the player as well as his representatives were in Rome this morning trying to fight the ban.
However, after a long hearing, where Gilardino explained the incident, the court decided to refuse the appeal and they have upheld the two match ban.

i think mr prandelli will use this to fire up the troops even more:
Both Fiorentina and Gilardino have been attacked,” Prandelli told Fiorentina.it after the hearing.“Somebody has confused our fair play with cheating but I believe Alberto’s gesture was involuntary, as for the rest, we will not cause a stir.
“Gilardino will be fresh and ready for the game against Bayern Munich. We will accept everything with tranquility.”
The coach then spoke about the game against Inter and he believes it will be a test for his side to see if they are capable of challenging for the Scudetto this term.
“Inter? It’s a game which will show us what we can achieve this term and to see if we can hold down a place towards the top end of the league.”
