Quick Post: Highlights and Andrea Della Valle’s Resignation

By: Tim | September 24th, 2009

Good morning – No time for a long one, but I wanted to post something brief so we could discuss the news.

Andrea Della Valle has resigned his position as president of ACF Fiorentina effective immediately. Here’s the Football Italia story, and here’s the official press release.

I’m not sure what to make of this right now. I’m dissapointed, because Della Valle was a very important part of the “Viola Project” that has brought the team to the top of Serie A and the Champions League, all while doing things in a fiscally responsible manner with a plan in place for growth in the future.

Sweet highlights from yesterday: (I didn’t realize Bassy made several good saves, Fiorentina really should have scored 4, and, yeah, Santana still can’t finish).

Youtube from Berlusconi’s empire.

Forza Viola and I’m anxious to hear everyone’s thoughts.

On a more serious note, I can’t even enjoy Juve losing after today, especially to a Fiorentina ripoff.

Do they? How much money have the spent on the past two transfer seasons, minus the money they obtained from sales? And do they have a salary cap?

I would note for all the complaints about Fiorentina not spending enough this summer:

They spent 14 mil. euro on Gilardino, 13 mil. euro on Melo, 11 mil. euro on Vargas, an 8 mil. euro on Jovetic in the summer of ‘08. They all turned out to be great deals and Gilardino, Vargas, and Jovetic are still vital members of the team.

But if you follow this team expecting them to spend $68 million every offseason, you’re a bit off your rocker. I feel like this gets lost in all the discussions about their transfer spending. Combine this year and last year and they’ve sold players for about $30 million and brought in players at about $70 million. It was crazy for people to expect big spending this summer.

I was always skeptical of the money sourced from Tod’s. Sure, my female friends recognize the brand almost as quickly as Gucci, but the Tod’s driving shoes on which the fortune was built have a fad-like quality to them.
This is a difficult time which could be dealt with by a marquee January signing and one or both of Vargas and Jovetic committing their future to the Purple. I had to take a step back instead of giving in to the knee-jerk reaction, and I think we should all take heart in what has happened over the past few years. If you factor in Melo money, I’d say we haven’t drained the Della Valles of much net cash. We are nearly self-sufficient, we’ve got a great coach, and we have talent in all age ranges. We WILL be a calcio institution. We WILL win trophies.

Well, a draw is best for us. No one like Juve winning, but Genoa are going to consistently be closer on points to us so (unfortunately) we can’t wish them the best.

And I agree with Jeff (again). The DVs stated last summer that they were giving Corvino two transfer seasons worth of cash to spend, he spent it well, and we have nothing to complain about. This summer was more of a normal summer for us. We can’t expect to get a Gilardino in every time.

I only had one problem with the summer, that was not finding a center back, and even then it was clear the club was looking. What annoyed people more than anything else was selling Melo to Juve, and I suspect Melo was pushing for a transfer no matter what he said.

if anyone has additions that i forget, please update:
    the last two years
    in:

    melo 13
    vargas 12
    jovetic 8
    gilardino 15
    zanetti 2
    de silvestri 8
    marchionni 2

    out:
    melo 20
    pazzini 8
    osvaldo 7

works out to be a 25 mil deficit. Does CL money cover that? Also taken into account our salary, which has been ~35 a year. Plus ticket sales, plus sponsors, plus tv money.

Can anyone crunch it all to get a bottom line for these 2 years?

I’m sure Melo is making a lot more than the Fiorentina individual player wage cap at Juve, so I’m fairly certain that yes, he did push for that transfer.

I’ve been waiting for Fiorentina to pick up a solid CB to pair with Gamberini for four years now. Every year they look. Every year they find nothing. Next summer, hopefully they’ll splash the cash on a good young CB from somewhere and we’ll finally have a solid backline.

Wasn’t Melo’s purchase more like $8Mil? That’s the number that was being tossed around when he was sold, to show how much the club made off him.

I thought we had already signed that Argentine kid from Boca Juniors, Munoz, the 18-year-old center back who was supposed to join the club in January. I guess not.

Okay guy…I know we dont talk gambling here but i just layed down this juice parlay on my online site:
    Inter -111
    Fiorentina +110
    Roma -118
    $50 pays $369

i learned not to gamble when i bet on the patriots to beat the giants in the superbowl.
but that looks like good value, mike b. strange that the roma match is given the worst odds, id take that as the weak point in your parlay.

    Mike,

Do you need all three teams to win? I’m not familiar with soccer gambling.

Because I would only comment that Catania, Sampdoria, and Livorno are all known for being particularly tough at home. Plus, our buys in purple always seem to struggle away at other Tuscan sides.

Here’s a positive I just realized, as bad as our defense is, it’s 100 times better than the one our old pal Ujfalusi is currently a part of.

    on the topic of ujfalusi…
he breaches contract, owes 875k. mutu breaches contract, owes more than he ever made in his life. i know i know, im beating a dead horse.

and to answer jeff’s question for mike b, those lines are for the stated team to win. even one draw of those three matches and he loses it all.

did anyone see the genoa match? was the scoreline indicative of the play?

i guess he had a precontract with sevilla before he went to atl madrid. convoluted bosman shenanigans where no one ever really knows what happened and what was just rumor.

Melo cost us 24.5million euro, Marchionni was sold to you at a valuation of 4.5mil, so net you earned 20mil from it.

Did I read Marco played well a few days ago?

And yeah, Nolan, the sad thing is he’s the best defender too. It’s like watching a clown show.

We now have a twinning of fans with Liverpool!

Marchionni finally was somewhat visibile against Samp, setting up Jo-Jo’s header with a good cross. He’s not a very exciting player by any means, he’s less dynamic than Vargas and Santana, but I can see why he could turn out to be a good buy, he’s a consistent crosser (much better than Santana in that regard). My expectations aren’t very high but depending on our formation he should be useful.

Regarding Pateti, yeah, “clown show” is the perfect way to describe that defense.

Liverpool? Gross, I’m not a fan at all, but I hate most English clubs.

I think that’s pretty cool – that twinning business. I think that violence and even hatred among fan bases is ridiculous. Then again, I’m a lover not a fighter.
