I’m not going to recap the game. I’m too down right now to do it, and have no desire to live through that hell again. Instead, here are just my quick thoughts on the match.
1). Rangers is everything that is wrong with football. Here in the United States a lot of people think football (soccer) sucks; they think it is boring, defensive, and lacks anything remotely related to grace or athletic ability. In other words, that the sport is little more than a bunch of morons kicking a ball around, waiting for the 0-0 draw that would end the game. Fiorentina is the antithesis of that belief; Rangers are the poster boys.
2). Conversely, one of the great things about football is that it is more reflective of life than any other sport; in no other game could a team that was so outclassed in imagination, athletic ability, and pure skill drive a better team into the ground by playing negatively. But in football we have unfair results. Just like life.
3). I’ve got a new second-favorite team. Tomorrow I’m going out to buy a Celtic shirt. I wonder how many neutral fans of the game will join me.
4). I’m more proud then ever of the Viola. Monto, Mutu, Pazzini, Gamberini and the rest all played like men tonight. They went out and played the beautiful game when Rangers packed 11 men behind the ball. They went over the trenches and charged the enemy, even in a losing cause. I will never forget this season, and the players that made up this very special team.
5). Bobo is obviously done playing football at the top level. There’s no need to beat this into the ground. Let’s just acknowledge it and move on.
6). I‘ve never been less scared of an opponent than I was tonight vs. Rangers. All week I worried about the away goal, but ten minutes into the match I realized the Scots weren’t trying to score one. From minute 1 to minute 210, they were playing for penalties. Hell of a way to play football.
7). Can you tell I’m bitter?
One last anecdote and then I’m going to bed. Midway through the game my Dad came over the house and began watching some of the match with me. My Pops is not a football fan (he’s a baseball guy and raised me to be the same) and is always baffled by soccer. After watching the teams play for a few minutes, he asked “Is the white team [Rangers] even trying to score? Are they even trying to win the game? I don’t understand why you think this is fun to watch…â€
And I didn’t have answer to give him.
More tomorrow. And now, more than ever, Forza Viola.

Three things:
1. If you want to talk about catenaccio, you might want to learn how to spell it first.
2. Fiorentina really, really should have finished better.
3. For all that, they were AMAZING last night. I can’t think of the last time I saw a team try so hard and with such grace to gain such a closely-defended goal.
I’m bitter too, but I recognise the fact that they could have won this with a bit more precision, and they didn’t have that.

Ugly football. The Italian game is ugly. Cattenaccio, fan violence, drug cheats, bribery. The comments of some folk here are pathetic. La Viola failed to score against Rangers in 210 minutes. Blame yourselves, not Rangers. Rangers beat you. You lost because you were not good enough.

And by the way Fiorentina were totally disrepectful towards Scotland and Rangers. We do not have your money. You lack dignity and you deserved to lose.

It’s sad to see Celtic fans trying to hijack every opportunity, even a Fiorentina website to belittle Rangers. I am a true blue Rangers fan, and have watched Rangers for over 40 years. I have seen the skill of Laudrop and Davie Cooper, I’ve watched the sheer grit of Bomber Brown, and while I would love Rangers to play the sort of silky football which we all knew Fiorentina are or were capable of, our team is all about guts and determination just now. There are no world stars, but there are 11 players who will fight to the death for each other. Fiorentina have some fabulous players, but at the end of the day, they didn’t score, and didn’t have the nerve at penalties. If any of the Fiorentina fans and players are honest, I am sure they would have been delighted to have played ugly football and still won, rather than silky football and lost. It’s sad that there have been a few managers who have stood up and said Rangers play negative or anti football, but the fact is, they are in the final. If you ask me I’ll take win ugly any day over lose pretty. As for Celtic… they deserve no comment, so I wont.

Ugly football! Hell it was a beautiful game for me, I can’t remember the last time I ate my fingernails down to my elbows and then end up dancing around the living room for joy…….c’mon you Gers!!!!

So ugly a style that required you to hire an Italian to rear the ship..Good luck this summer at Euro, oh wait…

“As for Celtic… they deserve no comment, so I wont.”
-I won’t comment on the irony of this comment…“It’s sad to see Celtic fans trying to hijack every opportunity, even a Fiorentina website to belittle Rangers”
-Yes, Rangers fans have never had a history of ever celebrating Celtic’s defeats or ever going on a Celtic website…hmmm Dignity eh?Posted from

It doesn’t happen very often, but I actually agree with Matt. Rangers go on Celtic boards and celebrate Celtic losses, and vice versa, all the time. It’s part of the Old Firm hate-fest that makes the rest of the league dislike both of them so much. This isn’t anything new.

im an intermilan fan,i just want to say that fiorentina played better but too prediictble,i watched the game and as neutral fan i deserve a medal,as for vieri,is a miserable man,he never score when it matters, and i got experience as an inter and italy fan!!!remember when he missed in front at the goalkeeper against KOREA over and over again, yes he scored the first but he missed the most important.good luck in the final.

I had the good fortune along with my friend to purchase tickets for the game in the Poltrone b section of the stadium. While we were not dressed in Rangers colours, it was obviuos we were rangers supporters.
Yes Fiorentina palyed some good passing football but you have to accept that Rangers are not as techically adept as Fiorentina, but that’s football.
I’ll take this opportunity to thank the many very friendly and decent Fiorentina fans we met, with the exception of a young, I was going to call her a lady, female, who subjectedus to a torrent of abuse stating “your nothing but a f***n* pub team” etc…..Those around including her boyfiend/ husband (possibly her carer) looked very disappointed and embarrassed at her outburst.
To finish, we may be a pub team, but if Carlsberg made pub teams, then we are the best pub team in the world.
Don’t be bitter Fiorentina fans, support Rangers in the final.Follow Follow!!

Forgot to mention the young female had a very obvious west of Scotland accent, she was definately not Italian! The closest she has been to Italian was a pizza from Pizza Corola in Buchanan Street, Glasgow! Thought I’d better clear that one up!
The best welcome Rangers fans have ever had…Thank you Firenze!Posted from

lol @ the rangers fans making sweeping generalizations about all italian people, and then trying to take the moral high route with this conversation. THAT is irony
Rangers did destroy the spectacle of football in this tie, but they’re not here to entertain. they’re here to win. I’m disappointed, but this has just taught fiorentina a few lessons about cup competitions, finishing, and one bobo vieri (who should never take a penalty kick before mutu)

reading these comments coming from rangers suporters sounds hilarious.rangers has like the most trophies in europe, isn’t that right?and yet you just sit back and defend in both legs.it’s not like you were playing chelsea or manchester.and i’ll tell you something else:if this game would have been played ten times in a row, rangers would not win a single one.you were lucky ,that’s it.

Some of you guys really don’t get it, do you! Fiorentina did not have the ability during either leg of the tie to break down a team that has a good goalkeeper, a fantastic defence, a mediocre midfield and a pretty average forward line! The Fiorentina coaching staff knew Rangers would play this way, did they not view the Rangers v Barcelona match in Glasgow? They must have realised Rangers would play this way! Stop bleating, build a bridge and get over it.
Yes Rangers have won more national trophies than any other country in the world. So WE ARE WINNERS!!!!! You don’t become winners by letting other big teams from better leagues in the world dictate how you play……..That is irony!!FORZA RANGERS!!!!!!!
Fiorentina fans and *supporters should get behind Rangers and cheer them on to win the UEFA Cup. Logic dictates, now there’s a strange concept for football fans and supporters, that the team who defeats you should be the team you want to win the trophy…….No?
Well it could be worse, at least we are not Juventus!!!!!!!
*Supporters attend matches, fans generally sit/stand in bars and watch the game. For the fans, you should get along to some matches, you may even enjoy it!!
WATP
This has been fun. I thought paranoia was a west of Scotland trait but I see it’s alive and well throughout the football world!
AsI said WATP

to Ginandorange: You arrogant f*nny. I searched google for a review of the game, came across the title of this article, thought it was a great article and thought it was brilliant that I could leave a comment.
I didnt hijack the board to slag off rangers - the article already did that.
Fio should have won the game but they had their boots on the wrong feet.
The main jist of the article and all the subsequent comments is: Would you rather watch a team that plays attacking sexy football or a prodominently defensive, sneak a goal, wait for penalties team.
Thanks for your comment, not only will 100,000 people be celtic fans due to your style of play, they will be convinced to switch because they dont want to be associated with the likes of you.
I really hope you play like that in the final (and remaining game of the season) and your rivals all get 93 minute winning goals then you will take your blinkers of and see they whole point of this article.

Rangers won the only way they could, fiorentina have a vastly inflayed transfer budget due to the cash they receive from italian t.v,rangers have to rely on homegrown scottish players who make up in sheer guts and heart from what they lack in ability. You know nothing about football and the great tradition and history behind Glasgow Rangers so I suggest you stick to your glorified rounders(baseball) like the rest of your compatriates

“For those of you wanting the all-white Zenit St Petersburg to conquer Rangers in the final, it’s worth pointing out that they are a club supported by the most racist fans in European football (even worse than the Spanish!).”
So Rangers fans singing “Nakamura ate my dog” at Celtic Park doesn’t have a particularly racist tone in your mind?

errr… as a non-Old Firm fan I dislike Rangers as much as anyone, but the (albeit offensive - not once did I say Rangers’ fans were angels; in fact quite the opposite)jibe at Nakamura pales in comparison to wearing KKK masks at matches and hanging toy monkeys from nooses and refusing to accept signing black players.

Good point evilbaronjax, the Nakamura song is more of a cultural mistake than racial, with Korea not being a million miles away from Japan. At the same time it is just a bit silly!
If I can I would like to return to the premise of this web page / blog, that of Rangers winning a match ugly and as a result 100000 new Sellick fans have been created in the process.. This is also a bit silly as almost every Sellick fan I speak to claims that the UEFA Cup is not worth winning…How times change!!ps just got my ticket for the UEFA Cup final…very happy!!

We won. Simple as that.
Of course I can’t remember the last time Italy sucked the life out of a world cup nad defended a none too convincing 1-0 lead.
That is football. Tonight we go to the final with our heads held high. Join us in supporting the greatest footballing tradition in the world that is Glasgow Rangers FC. Follow Follow!
