The International Break is Over, Parma come to the Franchi

By: Tim | November 20th, 2009

RocketWell, jet lag, returning to work and an oncoming cold aside, it is damn good to be back. Especially with a tasty Serie A matchup to look forward to tomorrow. I’m planning to do a post about playing a little calcio on the beach in Essaouria on the Atlantic coast of Morocco during my vacation (still have quite a few pictures and videos to sort through), but for today, let’s stick to the big Fiorentina – Parma matchup tomorrow night at the Artemio Franchi.

I suppose you guys don’t need me to tell you about this, but things are looking pretty good at the moment for Fiorentina. Our boys are back in the top 4 (though the standings are quite bunched with only 4 points between 10th placed Napoli and 3rd placed AC David Beckham), and have 9 points from the first 4 CL group stage matches. Lyon come to town on Tuesday for a massive match (a win in that one guarantees Fiorentina a place in the knockout phase of the CL), so Prandelli will have to work around some availability issues and rotate his squad a bit to get results both tomorrow and on Tuesday evening. And, there is that trip to the San Siro to face league-leading Inter next Sunday. So, needless to say, Fiorentina come out of the International break with quite a daunting set of games to look forward to.

Team News:

Cesare Prandelli has said that the following guys will not be available tomorrow, due to injury or illness: Gamberini, Mutu, Jo-Jo and Kroldrup (who came back with a bit of Bronchitis from Denmark, but will be good to go on Tuesday). This means we’re looking at either the vaunted Dainelli-Natali CB pairing, or having Comotto or Donadel play at CB to deal with the injury crisis. At any rate, I’m crossing my fingers that ex-Viola man Valeri Bojinov will not make his old team pay due to our depleted CB situation.

There are many members of the current Fiorentina squad with ties to Parma. I think the list is complete with Prandelli, Mutu, Marchionni, Bassy, Donadel and the Gila Monster. Of note for Parma, besides Bojinov, is their defensive midfielder, McDonald Mariga, as the young Kenyan has been linked to Fiorentina and is quite impressive in the center of the field.

Lineups, aka Blind Guess Dept.

Here are Prandelli’s choices:
Agyei (numero di maglia 26), Avramov, Babacar, Castillo, Comotto, Dainelli, De Silvestri, Donadel, Frey, Gilardino, Gobbi, Jorgensen, Marchionni, Natali, Pasqual, Santana, Savio, Vargas e Zanetti.

Here’s my guess: 4-2-3-1: Bassy; Comotto, Dainelli, Natali, Pasqual; Donadel, Zanetti; Vargas, Santana, Marchionni; Gila Monster. Here’s hoping we get a look at young Savio as a substitute.

For Parma: 4-1-3-2: Mirante; Zaccardo, Panucci, A. Lucarelli, Castellini; Mariga; Morrone, Dzemaili, Galloppa; Amoruso, Bojinov

TeeVee

This one will air live on FSC, beginning tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 pm EST. Sweet.

Prediction Time:

I think the Viola will get it done at home. 3-1. Goals for Gila, Donadel and Vargas for the good guys and one for Bojinov as well.

Forza Viola and its good to be back.

    We struggle to defend the counter normally, but without Gambo, we were exposed. Do they have no speed, stamina, positioning, which? Our back 4 kept getting caught out, again and again. Make an adjustment, for chrissakes.

    Our biggest concern is getting healthy, not the result of this game. With all of our personnel out, I would have been happy with a draw, but I’m not suprised at the loss. Does it suck? Sure, but c’mon, we’re at mile 9 of the marathon. Back off the ledge, folks. Come back inside, have a pint of the bitter, and let’s start stressing about Tuesday. :-)

    Udinese’s extra kit that they are wearing today against Juvemerda is our exact jersey with a black triangle under the arms. Thanks Lotto.

    well… if we win the CL, we get automatic qualification next year haha. anywho, i honestly expected europa zone with no gambit and no mutu/jj. to answer Tomas, dainelli-natali has no speed. they’re great in the air and they have decent positioning.

    and this is a great article:

    If I’m a central defender with no speed, I’m not gonna venture too far forward, like our lead-foots do. Know your limitations.

    we play the offside trap. it comes down to poor personnel for the system. its also why i wasn’t too thrilled about us chasing luisao. from what i’ve seen of the selecao, lucio cleans up the mess that luisao’s slowness leaves behind much like gamberini does with dainelli.

    Like their opponents, Lyon had something of a calamity at the weekend. Playing on Saturday evening against Grenoble, a side who had previously won only one point from a possible 36, OL were held to a 1-1 draw. To make matters worse, they led 1-0 when Laurent Courtois of GF38 was dismissed.

    if lisandro worried me in the first leg, then a CB pairing of dainelli and natali tomorrow will make me worry even more. not to mention bastos. pjanic, gouvou etc.
    Maybe we should have held onto da costa (i think we never gave him a decent chance), he’s playing for the westham first team and scored at the weekend.

    I can’t say I have much confidence with that back line and without Jo Jo…oh well, let’s see what we are made of.

    What are the scenarios for qualification? Cheating Frog bastards are in, clearly, but how many points do we need? Assuming that the Scousers beat Debrecen, where does that leave us?

    I thought that if we tie Lyon we can go to Liverpool (assuming they beat Debrecen) and lose by one goal maximum and still advance because we would be level on points but have the higher aggregate score against them?

    Heres the tiebreaking criteria:

    1. higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question;
    2. superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question;
    3. higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question;
    4. superior goal difference from all group matches played;
    5. higher number of goals scored;
    6. higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question, as well as its association, over the previous five seasons.

    Sorry for the delay – I’ll have something up later this morning. Trying to catch up from my trip and my computer at home doesn’t work – sorta cuts into by blogging time. Very nervous about the game today.

    Yes, I think we are mathematically allowed to draw (but please do win) Lyon and lose to the Scousers in England, provided that;

    i) we don’t lose by a three-goal margin, or,
    ii) we don’t lose by a two-goal margin *and* not scoring. A 1-3 lose would still send us to the knockout stage.

    But let’s keep this as simple as possible and beat Lyon. They had a bad week too.

    Yes i would just like the win as well! ha. I like the feeling of “win and you’re in.” Hopefully the boys are feeling hungry because they are so close that it will push them even further and harder for the win.
