The Purple One is Back (I Mean Me, not Prince)
By: Ted | September 8th, 2008
Sorry about the extended break, everyone. With the hateful international week upon us, my wife and I took off for a little break on the beautiful island of Nantucket, which is just off the coast of Massachusetts, for those of you who are geographically challenged. (My wife, by the way, is the bomb. She always plans our vacations for when the Viola aren’t playing. Except when we vacation in Florence, when she plans our vacations for WHEN they are playing. She even gave birth to our son three days before the start of Euros 2008, assuring that I could watch every game live at home while on paternity leave. Okay, that was unplanned, but still.)
Anyway, while I was gone…not much happened. The big news is that our stalwart central defender, Alessandro Gamberini, hurt himself while playing for Italy and will be out for an extended period. (Perhaps twenty days, perhaps more.) He’s our best defender in the middle of the park and we have key league and Champions League matches coming up, so this hurts. God, I hate internationals.
There are also a few rumors floating around, including one that Pablo Osvaldo almost went to Spurs and another that the Viola might be in the hunt for Lukas Podolski come the January transfer window. Christ, we are already talking about the January window? Anyway, I will dignify neither of these silly rumors with serious comment.
So that’s all I’ve got for now. Like I said, its been a quiet week. Now that we are back on track, however, we have a big week ahead of us. The Viola travel to Napoli on Sunday (they may still play in front of an empty house) followed by their first proper Champions League match in the mid-week. Like all of you, I can’t wait.
So it was a nice break, but it is good to be back. I will keep you up-to-date with the news as we move towards our big week.

One of my players was vacationing this summer and played soccer with some Italian kids, who ended up giving him a scarf. On one side it says “Viola Ti Amo,” which we have figured out refers to Fiorentina. The other side has a motto…something about wobbling but not falling. Can you tell us what that is?
There is now a Viola fan in South Dakota!

welcome back!
The napoli stdium saga continues:
Napoli have confirmed they will appeal against the decision to shut down two large sections of their San Paolo stadium.Italy’s Lega Calcio ruled on Monday that the stadium’s Curvas A and B – which house Napoli’s ‘ultra’ supporters – would be closed until October 31 as punishment for the behaviour of their fans on the opening weekend of the season.
Before Napoli’s first game at Roma, a number of supporters vandalised trains and the central rail station in Naples before travelling to the capital. Once at the Stadio Olimpico, several Napoli fans were detained by police.
The Serie A club were also fined 10,000 euros as a result of the incidents.
A club statement read: ”SSC Napoli announces it has ordered lawyer [Mattia] Grassani to present an urgent appeal regarding the decision made by the sporting judge of the Lega Calcio on the partial closure of the stadium.”
The ruling has created a logistical headache for Napoli ahead of Sunday’s home game against Fiorentina, with tickets having already been sold for the affected sections.

Viola fans were banned from travelling to Napoli today, though many had already decided not to go.
Beaker, there are dozens of variations on those scarves, but the sentiment refers to our forced demotion to Serie C2 (the regionalised Fourth Division) following the bankruptcy brought about by our previous owner.
And now the Viola are in the Champions League . . .

ursus beat me to it. here’s the story:
ROME (AFP) – Fiorentina fans have been banned from travelling to this weekend’s away game at Napoli, according to Italy’s committee for the analysis of security at sporting events (Casms) on Tuesday. The move was first drawn up last week, but the disciplinary body has only now rubber-stamped the plans.
Casms also imposed restrictions on the sale of tickets to Bologna fans for their trip to Fiorentina on September 21 to one per person, with buyers needing to show a form of identity.
Several lower league matches have also been subject to restrictions.
The move comes just a day after Napoli were fined 10,000 euros (14,200 dollars) and ordered to close two parts of their stands for four league games after violent scenes during a match against AS Roma last month.
Italy’s interior ministry had also already banned Napoli fans from travelling to away matches all season.
Casms are also looking at the possibility of taking added security measures for Italy’s World Cup qualifier against Georgia on Wednesday.

not sure how reliable:
Fiorentina and Romania striker Adrian Mutu has retired from International football, according Romanian paper Libertatea. The prolific hit-man has had enough of coach Victor Piturca who recently claimed that Mutu would not have made a difference against Lithuania.Posted from

ouch lol – Milan returned to action tonight as they took on Swiss side Lugano. However, it was the same old Rossoneri performance as they succumbed to an embarrassing 2-0 defeat.

Piturca is under a huge amount of pressure in Romania due to the side’s recent poor results (and a 1-0 win over the Faroes last night isn’t going to help much). One needs to see the Mutu story in that context; the whole thing (and Piturca’s career as national coach) will be over by Christmas.

no, it was garbage.
Libertatea reported yesterday that the forward was furious with Romania coach Victor Piturca’s claims that the country would still have lost 3-0 to Lithuania at the weekend even with Mutu on the pitch. The Fiorentina star was said to have been so offended that he had decided to hang up his international boots unless the Romanian FA brought in a new head coach.
Mutu has now issued a response in which he categorically rubbishes these claims.
“Honestly I was very surprised to read that I was angry with the coach and wanted to quit the national team,” the 29-year-old stated.
“I can guarantee that I have never said anything like that and I’m absolutely not thinking about it. I haven’t argued with Piturca.”
Mutu made his Tricolorii debut in 2000 and he has since scored 29 goals in 64 appearances.
News that he hasn’t retired will come as a welcome boost to Romania, who have made a shaky start to their World Cup 2010 qualifying campaign. Last night the country limped to a 1-0 win against minnows the Faroe Islands
