Time to Take Care of Business against Torino

By: Tim | May 1st, 2009

Fiorentina’s weekly massive Serie A match is fast approaching. On Sunday afternoon, 17th place Torino will travel to the Artemio Franchi to face off with 4th place Fiorentina. It looks like it is going to be a beautiful spring afternoon in Firenze, so we will hope that Fiorentina can entertain the Franchi faithful with a nice home victory.

Mismatch

As I alluded to in the comments section of the previous post, this pits one of Serie A’s best home teams against the league’s worst road team. Fiorentina are tied with Inter for the second best home record so far this season, while Torino are the only Serie A team without a win on the road this season. Although, to be fair, Torino are coming off of a key 1-0 victory over Siena which puts them 1 point above the drop zone.

Team News

Marco Donadel’s shirt tug on De Rossi last week puts him at the limit, so he’s out for this game. Fortunately, this is mitigated somewhat by the news that My Main Man Melo will be back for next week’s game. The usual suspects are still out injured, with Santana and Mutu still nursing injuries. At this point, I haven’t seen anything about who Cesare has named in his 18 for this game, so I have no idea whether Old Man Jorgensen and his glass legs will be ready to go at this point. It looks like his fellow Dane, Kroldrup will be healthy enough for the bench.

Sunday’s match will be an interesting one to watch. Right now, Fiorentina are in the position they want to be in as far as qualifying for the Champions League. Win, and they’re in. The emotional victory over Roma last week was very important and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t slightly concerned that there will be a bit of a hangover from that result. And Torino, while not particularly strong, are a team fighting for Serie A survival. Plus, they have a couple of guys capable of scoring a goal, in Rolando Bianchi and that short bald guy who dribbles pretty good, Rosina. Either way, I think Prandelli will have the fellas ready to go come Sunday afternoon.

Lineups, aka Blind Guess Dept.

Torino: Stolen from Goal:

(3-4-1-2): Sereni; Rivalta, Natali, Franceschini; Diana, Barone, Saumel, Ogbonna; Gasbarroni; Bianchi, Stellone. Personally, I think goal are idiots for suggesting that Gasbarroni is going to play behind the strikers when Rosina is apparently healthy. Does this coach want to get relegated? At this point, Torino have exactly 2 dangerous players, Bianchi and Rosina. I can’t see them getting a point in Firenze without big contributions from those two.

Fiorentina: I see Cesare changing very little from the lineup he put out last week. The only real question is who will play alongside Monto in the deeper-lying midfield spots. I guess Jorgensen would be a good option, but we have no idea whether he’s fit enough for a start. I think Prandelli’s best option is to play Kuz there.

4-2-3-1: Bassy; Pasqual, Dainelli, Gamberini, Comotto; Monto, Kuz; Vargas, Jo-Jo, Semioli; Gila Monster.

TeeVee?

No dice this week. We’ll meet back here around 9:00 am on Sunday and do our usual exchange of various pirated internet feeds. Awesome.

Prediction

Let’s face it, Fiorentina are the much better team and Torino are simply turrible on the road. I’m going for a convincing 4-0 victory for the Viola. The goals will be spread around – I’ll say one for Jo-Jo, one for the Gila Monster and both wingers will get in on the action. One each for Vargas and Semioli. Forza Viola!

…The fact that both Criscito and Bocchetti occasional get stroppy enough that they get in trouble for it actually makes me me more attracted to them.

    I need serious help.

Trivial news but oh so awesome…

Tennis star Rafael Nadal: “I really enjoy watching the Italian championship…Roma and Fiorentina are my favorite teams”

I knew I liked that guy! I had read that Rafa’s a huge Real Madrid fan, as well as Mallorca (which is obligatory cuz he’s from there). I think he was a decent footballer as a lad, showed quite some promise, then focused on tennis exclusively around 12. His uncle Toni Nadal played at Barca, was capped a few times for the national team.

Now he roots for Fiorentina? That is awesome.

Not to ruin the celebrations, but it bears remembering this is the sixtieth anniversary of the Torino plane crash.

10 mil. is that all? must be rubbish

Several players were touted as possible candidates to join Bayern Munich this summer to replace Michael Rensing between the sticks after the young goalie lost his spot in the starting XI.

Uli Hoeness has now taken the time to rule out some of the touted glovesmen as possible additions.

“I know that Franck Ribery would like to see Sebastien Frey join the club this summer. However, Fiorentina have set a €10 million asking price, which is simply too much for us,” said Hoeness to Suddeutschen Zeitung.

That does seem too low for Bassy, sakas, but since we’ve transitioned into the midweek theoreticals; what would be a good but not crazy price? €12 million? €15 million?

Unlike the Real Madrids and Inter’s of the world, clubs like Fiorentina have to optimize their assets. I love Frey, but if some Euro giant paid stupid money for him, I’d have to let him go to bolster the back of the squad.

How is it possible that Bassy wouldn’t at least get 18 to 20 million Euros? 10 is a joke. Vargas was 13 million. He is starting to earn it, but that does put it in some perspective.

Hey, Mike R, do you have a link to the original article you got that quote from?

There was talk in the Florentine media a few weeks ago that Fiorentina was planning on putting recession clauses in the contracts of their players (the minimum amount they would sell the player for) — Frey was 15m euro, which frankly I thought was a little low.

here’s another pinch of salt to the stew:

Last season, Fiorentina made considerable expenditures in the transfer market to bring in the likes of Alberto Gilardino from Milan, Juan Vargas from Catania, and Felipe Melo from Almeria.

However, club sporting director Pantaleo Corvino has admitted that will not be the case again as the club only secured a budget of €20 million in 2008-09.

“The budget this year is not like last season, we must also consider the current economic crisis,” he revealed to Canale 10 program ‘Stadium’.

“To grow we must find opportunities that the market may present, but it will be very difficult.”

In fact, Corvino suggested that many of the incoming acquisitions will only be to replace some of the players that may be exiting the Florence-based outfit.

“Any further acquisitions will be only to replace those that ask us to leave, because they prefer another challenge than playing here,” he said.

well Storari is going back to Milan, Almiron is definitely leaving (and hopefully never touching a football again) Jorgensen hypothetically COULD retire, Donadel could make his way back to Parma, but Corvo won’t sell any of our big guns.

    backhanded slap at juve? lol
    (googled translation)

Speaking to the microphones to SkySport 24 Pippo Inzaghi, analyzing the championship, said: “Scudetto? It makes no sense for us to look ahead of Milan. We must think of the Fiorentina, by watching them in order to stay in the fight to get to the Champions. We that goal, we want to return to the competition and so we must look behind. “

    10 days for semioli:

Fiorentina announced that the diagnostic tests carried out this morning to Franco Semioli confirmed an injury distracted at first instance in the long adductor muscle. La prognosi è stimata nell’ordine dei 10 giorni. The prognosis was estimated in the order of 10 days. Semioli salterà dunque la trasferta di Catania ma potrebbe tornare a disposizione di Prandelli per la gara successiva con la Sampdoria dell’ex Pazzini Semioli then skip the trip to Catania, but may be available to Prandelli for the next race with the former Sampdoria Pazzini

pasqual leaving on a free next summer worries me. Other than that, as long as we get 1 or 2 quality defenders this summer i’ll be happy. Corvo should throw all 20mill in that area.
