Tuscan Derby Preview
By: Tim | March 21st, 2009
This will be a brief preview, unfortunately. I’ve had some computer issues this week so I haven’t been able to keep up with the Viola blog duties the way that I want to. Siena are coming to the big Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence for a key game for both teams. In addition to the local bragging rights, there is a lot on the line for both teams. Siena sit seven points clear of the relegation zone and will be hunting for additional breathing room and as Roma is being thumped at home by Juventus as I write this, Fiorentina have an excellent chance to distance themselves from a rival for the last champions league qualification spot.
Team News
Nothing major to report on this front for Fiorentina. I think Prandelli will stick with a similar lineup that he used against Inter last week – though I agree with several comments that suggested the 4-1-3-2 formation would perhaps be more effective with Melo playing in front of the defense and Old Man Jorgensen playing behind the strikers.
The next 3 matches for Fiorentina are massive. Next week is away to Atalanta and then the following that is a visit from Cagliari. Plain and simple, 9 points are necessary to keep the goal of 4th place within reach.
Lineups, aka Blind Guess Dept.
Fiorentina: Bassy; Commotto, Gamberini, Dainelli, Vargas; Melo; Kuzmanovic, Jorgensen, Monto; Mutu, Gila Monster.
Siena: Curci; Zuniga, Portanova, Brandao, Del Grosso; Codrea, Vergassola, Galloppa; Kharja; Amoruso, Maccarone
TeeVee?
Looks like no broadcast in the USA. As usual, we can discuss various streams in the comments section around game time, which is 10:00 am EST tomorrow.
Predicition
Siena have been a tough opponent for Fiorentina the past couple of years and I’m sure they will be motivated tomorrow to try and recover from the 5-1 hammering Milan put on them last week. But, I think that the tide has started to turn for Fiorentina. At the start of the year, Fiorentina were getting results without playing well. Then the slump kicked in. Now, a solid performance against Inter will hopefully lay the ground work for the upcoming stretch where Fiorentina must start racking up points. I’m going to say a 2-0 win for the good guys, with a goal each from the Gila Monster and Mutu.

Cesare Rubishes Roma Talk
Prands says he likes it in Firenze, and claims he wants to stay. He’s only 51? Man, he looks 60.

Sweet video of Rui Costa and Batistuta! Love the dramatic music background. It was appropriate for viewing the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, or watching Batistuta split two defenders with the flick of the outside of his foot. Hilarious.

It looks like Juan Camilo Zuniga is ours if we qualify for Europe…

Also, regarding Prands, you have to remember how much he’s been through with his wife. I hope this team can reward all he’s put in, he has deserved some of the criticism he has gotten but at the same time I wouldn’t trade him for anyone.

So excuse my ignorance Nolan, why is acquiring Zuniga contingent upon us qualifying for Europe? Does “Europe” inclued the EUFA cup? Is it that Z only wants to play for a team in the CL next year, or is it the extra cash that Fiore would generate by being in the CL?
btw- I would LOVE to see him in purple. Talk about filling a gap.

His agent said his desire is to play in Europe next season, and we are definitely not the only suitors, just the ones in the best negotiating position.

Any chance you guys are gonna be snapping up Almiron? I can´t wait to get him off our books.

Almiron hasn’t impressed too many people in Florence, alessio, to put it extremely mildly. I doubt anyone wants him to stay, much less to see the field while he’s still with Fiorentina.

Haha, I know, Tomas. Just dreaming!

Sampdoria are looking interested in Almiron…I think our priorities for the summer are Zuniga, Palombo, and (please!!!) Ivanovic…theres also talk were interested in Paolucci from Catania and Effedopulos (sp?) from Siena as a backup to Frey since Storari is going back to Milan.

How are any of the youngsters out on loan doing? I think Lupoli is progressing, yes? We’ll need some depth up front. What about the kid, di Carmine? Jan Hable looked like a player, any word on him? He’s still young. What about da Costa, is he getting time at Samp? What about our man “Cool” Papa Waigo?

yeah, i didnt think it was all that serious
Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino has returned to training for his side just days after straining one of his adductor muscles.
Il Corriere Dello Sport reports the prolific striker, who has scored 16 goals in Serie A this term, was involved in Wednesday afternoon’s training session. Although ‘Gila’ worked in the gym, his efforts were less than laboured in an attempt not to aggravate the injury.
The Italian hitman limped off during the 1-0 win over Siena on Sunday and his club confirmed he would be out of action for around two weeks.
However, the striker is adamant on thwarting the injury threat and the publication claims he could be back against Atalanta on Sunday week if his recovery continues to progress rapidly. Fiorentina are unlikely to rush their man back though.
Gilardino has carried his side forward this season and his aim will be to help ensure the Viola finish with a place in the Champions League. They are currently two points behind fourth placed Genoa.

I don’t think I ever wanna see Da Costa in Florence ever again…Di Carmine is having a fantastic season at QPR but says (and this also comes from a Florentine friend of mine who was a classmate of his) he wants to return to Italy…Lupoli looks destined to return to England with an offer from Newcastle, and Hable is asking for a transfer out…destination, France or Belgium on loan, same with Mazuch

both danes are up
Martin Jorgensen is now 33-years-old, but he believes he still has plenty to give to both club and country.
According to the newspaper Nuovo Corriere di Firenze, the versatile Dane has spoken out about his future.
“I was told I was not ready to come back to the national side,” he began, “But then the coach saw me play against Inter and changed his tune.
“It would be incredible to play the third World Cup of my career, but whatever happens it is fantastic to be here and to see that things are back as they once were.”
Jorgensen, who plays in midfield for his club, but is often used as a striker by his country, has come back after a long injury, and is clearly glad to be playing once more.
It was feared that he might not be able to play at the top level again, but Martin is proving his doubters and critics wrong.
When the Viola played Palermo, Danish boss Morten Olsen, said Jorgensen was clearly not in a condition to be able to deal with the rigour of international games, but much to the Fiorentina player’s delight, cap number 86 now seems on the cards and perhaps goal number 13 for his country as well.
