Udinese-Fiorentina preview
By: Dumitru | April 18th, 2009Today i watched Genoa collapsing against Lazio(thanks guys!!), wich means that a win against Udinese will catapult us into 4th place. This is the second time, in consecutive weeks, when Lazio is doing, indirectly, favours to us, after ending Roma’s realistic hopes of playing in Champs League next season.
Udinese is coming after a demoralising exit from Uefa cup at the hands Werder Bremen, the killers of italian teams in Europe. Curiously, Werder didn’t lose a match to italian opposition, this season, knocking Milan and Udinese from Uefa cup, and forcing Inter to finish second in their CL group. Combined with our losses to Bayern, this may result in the loss of a CL spot by Serie A to Bundesliga, wich will seriously damage the prestige and attractivity of the italian championship around the world.
Udinese will be tired, and they really have nothing to play for. Their season is over, and they are virtually safe from relegation. They have a good record against us, beating us twice last season, and, if you remember, they ended our 15 match undefeated streak last season, with Qualiarella and Di Natale on the scoresheet, if i’m not mistaken, chasing us thereafter, along with Sampdoria and Milan, in the race for the 4th place all season long. This season, they have been average so far, despite starting brightly, failing to cement themselves in the italian elite. We beat them, soundly, 4-2 at home, in the current campaign, with Adrian Mutu, Montolivo(twice) and Gila on the scoresheet for us.
Injured or suspended:
Udinese: Di Natale, Coda,Tissone,Ferronetti and, possibly, Alexis Sanchez are all injured.
Fiorentina: Adrian Mutu, Mario Alberto Santana and, probably, Per Kroldrup will fill the injury list for us, while Melo and Ricardo Montolivo are suspended.
Probable lineups:
Udinese (4-3-3): Handanovic; Zapata, Domizzi, Felipe, Lukovic; Inler, D’Agostino, Asamoah; Pepe, Quagliarella, Floro Flores.
Fiorentina : San Cesare will have to choose between 2 tactical formations. The last two games, he used a 4-4-2 formation. He could also opt for a 4-3-3 construction. There is also the question of who will play as starters. In a 4-4-2 formation, the lineup might look like this: Frey; Pasqual, Gamberini, Dainelli, Comotto; Vargas/Kuzmanovic, Donadel, Kuzmanovic/Almiron, Semioli; Jovetic, Gilardino. In case San Cesare opts for a 4-3-3, it will look like this:Frey; Pasqual, Gamberini, Dainelli, Comotto; Vargas, Donadel, Kuzmanovic; Semioli, Jovetic, Gilardino. There is also a weak possibility that we will employ a 4-3-1-2 formation with either Jorgensen or Semioli behind strikers.
FORM GUIDE:
Udinese (D D L L W) Fiorentina (L L W W W)
MATCH PREDICTION:
GOD/the Universe/karma/Whoever gave us the opportunity to reclaim the 4th spot, so, let’s not refuse this gift. I predict a 2-0 or 2-1 victory for us, based on our superior form and motivation, with Gila and Jo-Jo scoring for us, and, maybe, Quagliarella for Udinese.

I agree that Sanchez is a good player, I’m just not sure he can stand up if a wind of more than 20 mph comes by …

So if Kuzmanovic is disqualified for the next match, we’ll probably see a bit more of Almiron/Donadel.

vargas is gonna get a ban too if he keeps this up

I hate seafood! I can’t believe I just watch an hour and a half of the soccer equivalent to ‘the dump and chase’! Does fiorentina have any other plays in the book?

At least Monto gets back next week … I’ll post the recap tonight. I’m off for a run to get rid of the frustrations from watching this match.

It looks like Fiorentina is the team who played 3 days ago. No fight and slow to every ball. Embarassing display by Viola.

I don’t know if there’s anything worthwhile to take away from this game. Pasqual is better at crossing than Vargas, but Vargas is more likely to make ground than Pasqual. Donadel is not suited to a defensive midfield position, but we knew that. Jovetic can’t yet do a man’s job. Bonazzoli isn’t quick enough to be a real target man. Gilardino can’t manufacture goals, only poach them.
Almiron, Zauri made absolutely no impression on me one way or the other.
Semioli looked OK a couple of times, at other times I didn’t really notice him. Gamberini and Dainelli played well, I thought. Jorgensen’s ‘cup of coffee’ held some promise, why didn’t he start in place of Jovetic?
I’m sorry, but I’m back to Prandelli’s shortcomings – how on earth did he get a reputation as a tactical maestro? I just don’t see it.

I have to disagree with Irfan. I don’t think this was as bad as a previous game, but I’d have to go back over the comments to remind myself which one. I think it might have been the first game back from the Christmas break. There was also a game in November, when we dropped three straight, that was pretty bad.
All things considered, I wouldn’t be too harsh on this performance. It was almost our second team out there, and there were grounds for optimism after the first half. The penalty really broke our spirit, and the free kick that Sanchez won after Dainelli grabbed a handful of his shirt came too soon after our goal. Furthermore, Frey should have covered that. What was the wall for if he was still going to position himself in the middle like that?

he might not have set the world alight but i thought donadel was okay today, just a bad performance by the team as a whole. If anything, i think there was too much hype around jovetic when he arrived. Sure he will improve, but we should start to think of him as a player just like the rest, nothing special.

fra paolo, if you read my comment again, i did not say that was the worst performance i’ve seen. It was one of the worst and the 3-1 (they should have scored more)scoreline says it all.

I’m sorry but if we had already figured out that Pasqual-Vargas works well together, and we have Jorgensen on the side (who made a difference the second he entered) why did we start Almiron?????????
Almiron is the absolute worst thing that ever happened to this team

…I like pretending that we’ve been brilliant all season and we’re currently competing with Inter for the title. Oh, and that Juve is 9th.
Wouldn’t that be a nice reality?

Glad to see you guys are warming up in the best possible way for our “little” clash on saturday night.

I second that Nolan! Now I can study for exams
If I woke up to watch it I would be useless the whole day. Come on if we can’t beat Udinese when we NEED to get 4th place, we don’t deserve CL. Roma also won, their slowly gaining ground. We need Mutu and Melo, not a scraped up improvized team.Posted from

shit, i didn’t realise we have roma next. Judging by our last few performances, they could batter us.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!
The Federal Sport Judge is asking for an investigation into Vargas’ elbow against Obodo yesterday, risking 3 days of suspension…but NOT investigating Baptista’s obvious dive that earned Roma their non-existent penalty yesterday!!!

Again, why couldn’t it be Almiron that’s being investigated?!

I am convinced now that Almiron was the mole sent by Juve to screw up our season

It’s easy to curse our luck because it has been horrible, but still, even with injuries and outrageous suspensions we need to be able to defend!
