Viola Need 1 Point to secure 4th vs. Nearly-Relegated Lecce

By: Tim | May 22nd, 2009

I’m checking in from the couch for a short Friday night preview. I’m laid up with a sprained ankle from my football match on Wednesday night, and I’m keeping this bad boy elevated because I have to head out of town tomorrow morning.

This are going well in Florence, as Fiorentina are riding high on a streak of 7 wins in 8 matches. The primary goal, locking up 4th place and the Champions League qualification spot that goes along with it is within 1 point. So, on Sunday, a clean sheet against a bad offensive team that has conceded the most goals in Serie A will get you to 4th place. Of course, as we have been discussing, the potential to move up the table to second or third still exists, but a win at the Stadio Via del Mare will be necessary to achieve that. Lecce are all but relegated, and will need to win their last 2 matches to have any hope of surviving the drop into Serie B.

Lineups, aka Blind Guess Dept.

Viola: At this point, Cesare is not going to be pulling any surprises. Comotto comes back off of his suspension, Dainelli is trying to be fit and Kuz will miss through injury. Other than that, it is just the usual guys who are out. I’ll assume Dainelli makes it, if not we’ll see Kroldrup.

Bassy; Comotto, Dainelli, Gamberini, Pasqual; Melo, Monto; Semioli, Jo-Jo, Vargas; Gila Monster.

Lecce: I’m taking this from C4, because its a bit late and I’m not going to pretend that I know much about these guys, except that at one point they had Vucinic and Bojinov.

Benussi; Esposito, Fabiano, Stendardo, Giuliatto; Zanchetta, Caserta, Giacomazzi, Edinho; Castillo, Tiribocchi

TeeVee?

This game will be broadcast on delay by FSC on Sunday afternoon at 4pm EST. Because of the fact that this is one of the last 2 rounds of the season, all games will start at 9am on Sunday (except of course for the Lazio match which already took place due to UEFA’s need to get the Olimpico ready for the CL final on Wednesday). In all likelihood, I won’t be able to watch the match live because I’ll be at a party with my in-laws-to-be at some point on Sunday. If people find pirated internet streams, post them here. Otherwise, good luck avoiding the internets until 4pm.

Prediction

I think the Viola will lock up the 4th and fully relegate Lecce. I’m going with a resounding 3-0 victory. 2 for the Gila monster and one for My Main Man Melo.

Forza Viola!

Is Beckham still playing for Milan? This might sound like a silly question but I’ve done everything in my power to not pay attention to that circus, but if they are still forced to accommodate Beckham than our midfield can eat them alive.

Ye gods. I’m very late to this party, but that match was really appalling, except for the 90th minute, and Frey’s heroics. I can’t believe what a dumbass Melo is.

And I have to say, I really enjoyed scrolling through all the comments and finding Angharad’s hedgehog scattered among the rants, speculations, etc.

    Man, I love you guys.

I’m not sure exactly as I didn’t watch, Torino is claiming that after the pretty intense end of the game, Thiago Motta told them to shut up, sparking a fight. Who knows if it’s true or not but I wouldn’t be surprised. I was disappointed at Motta’s attitude this year, I was happy he finally had a successful season after such bad luck, but he’s been acting extremely arrogant at every chance he gets. I’m curious to see how he does on Inter, I hope he can stay healthy, but when he was fit enough to play he was a bigger red card machine than Melo at Barcelona.

    Lazio was Mussolini’s team.

    Mussolini was Hitler’s buddy.

Lazio supporters revel in a reputation for being fascits.

    Nazis are German fascists.

    q.e.d.

If you don’t like Peron of Argentina (as opposed to Peroni of Itali), you can make the same complaint about Racing Club de Avellaneda.

And Franco was a big sponsor of Real Madrid. Atletico, also had connections to the regime, though.

It’s difficult to be a fan of European football without finding political booby traps. Don’t let’s get started on the ‘Soviet’ teams.

Alright, do the same with Roma since it was formed by the Fascists.

Question: If we paid you 2millon for Almiron, on the condition he cannot be loaned out, sold on co-ownership or full, would you take him?

    (I’m pretty bored)

fiorentina was supposedly started by a fascist, i think wikipedia says. and i find the politics of clubs interesting, even if its completely irrelevant. so fra paolo, humor me with the soviet teams? alessio, i wouldnt take that money. give me giovinco along with almiron, and we can call it a deal…

I am just curious here, is this a statement of “fact” or is this just someone slagging another team?

speaking of Batiposer…am I the only one who would like to see Bologna in Serie B just so he learns not to question authority ever again? I think theres a clear reason Corvo decided to send him to Bologna.

i still have good memories with osvaldo, especially that goal against torino on the last day of the season… i guess the real problem was not his attitude, but the fear of being a reserve for long term to Mutu. the arrival of jovetic further complicated the situation. he’s not exactly young(23 or 24) and he, probably, felt that it’s better for him to go to a smaller team where he can play regularly and make a name for himself.

The reason Osvaldo lost respect with me and alot of fans is he demanded too much, he demanded we love him as much as Batistuta…even going as far as to take his number and his goal celebration (it was a brilliant homage against Juve, but when he was taking it again against Parma, thats when the eye rolling started) and then he completely dropped in form meanwhile taking pot shots at the team for not having more trust in him (like a more annoying version of Pazzini)

Hey everyone, i am coming late to this, and perhaps it has already been sorted out, but a friend says there is a way for Fiorentina to finish 3rd. The link explaining it is here: http://www.violanews.com/news.asp?idnew=36669. if you read italian better than I do, maybe you can sort it out.

What I gathered form the above link (and I honestly don’t get how this would work out) is that if Juve loses to Lazio at home this weekend in addition to Milan losing to us, we only have to beat Milan 1-0.
But if Juve wins, and Milan loses, we have to beat them 2-0 to go into third?
    Hmm..I don’t really get it.
Maybe someone else can do a better job of understanding this

you have to win by two goals no matter what. Its head to head that seperates teams on equal points in italy.

Juve has beta head to head against Milan and Fio, Milan beat Fio 1-0 at home first game. If its 1-0, then milan have beta goal diff. so fio have to win by 2 or more, its that simple
