Viola Thumped by Roma

By: Ted | September 20th, 2009

Christ, tough week for the sports fans in my house (and by that, I mean me and my 15-month old son; my wife could care less). I watch my beloved Viola lose on a shaky red card mid-week. I realize Kevin Garnett’s knee is still basically mashed potatoes. My old college basketball team is looking like its about to put up another year of mediocrity. Everything was supposed to be redeemed today, however, especially since my wife was taking the kid out for the day and I was going to get some uninterrupted time to veg and watch sports. So what happens? The Patriots lose, I lose in Fantasy Football for the week, I get bounced form my fantasy elimination league, and worst of all, in the MAIN EVENT of the day at the house, the one thing I had been looking forward to all week, the Viola loose to Roma. And loose ugly. Shit. Time to flip the calendar tomorrow, for all of us, and start another week.

I’m not sure what to say about today. Things did not look good. I feel like we simply couldn’t control the ball in the middle, and that the midfield was one step behind everything. We really missed Felipe today. I feel like the backline was actually pretty game, but they’re always on their back heels because of the problems in midfield and Gamberini, especially, is always trying to do too much to cover the errors of others. Regardless, however, I am not going to bitch too much about today: we simply got beat up. We’re going to have to get better, somehow.

Here are a few other thoughts from the game:

• I am done with you, Marchionni. I am done. You cross the ball like a blind man. You are a zero threat in the box. You scare no one. I am through waiting half a season for players to “come around.” We do too much of that with Fiorentina. He is a bench player at best. Make the move now. (Even if I hardly like Santana any better. And I don’t.) With ether of them up front on the right, you will not beat the good teams in Italy and certainly not the big clubs in Europe. Marchionni is quickly becoming my anti-Jovetic.

• Mutu hasn’t shown me much so far. Yes, I know he’s hurt, etc. And I was certainly the first to applaud the Great Man last year when he refused to sell him to Roma. We needed to keep him if we were going to be a Champions League-caliber team. But…have we held on to him too long? As my English friends say, past his “sell-by” date? This bears watching…

• I like Zanetti, personally and as a player, but he is not an adequate replacement for Melo. And neither is Donadel, when he plays. (Donadel has his strengths, but he is not a midfield destroyer.) We’re going to need to figure this out right quick.

• Montolivo. Ricky, my boy. Did you play today? Did you play a game of football? Or did you stand in the field again, looking at all the men in the colorful shirts, and watched the pretty banners wave and wondered where all the smoke was coming from? I wonder, Ricky, because you seem to be just like my son, and he is a little baby. Sometimes he does wonderful things, and seems incredibly precocious for his age; almost a genius. But then he can become distracted, say like when Grover comes on Sesame Street. He loves Grover. He drops everything and just points at Grover. You remind me of my son, Ricky. (By the way, Ricky: generally it is not good to be compared to an infant. Just so you know where I am going with my little analogy.)

We have Samp and Livorno coming up. Boy would I like to see 6 points from the next two. I am discouraged right now, as a true fan should be after a thumping. But take heart, everyone. The next match is always around the corner. Forza Viola.

I only saw part of the game (ended up actually going to play with some friends) but I really can’t say i’ve been disappointed with Donadel this year, hes been one of the few very bright spots. My question is WHY? Why trade an in form Jovetic for Mutu? Why an in form Jorgensen for Santana? WHY? Prandels absolutely lost his mind today.

Not to be the Debbie Downer of the group, but it looks like ADV is giving up the presidency, this does NOT mean that the Della Valles are selling the club, as DDV told Prandels last week but it comes within a major shakeup of their company Tod’s. According to violanews the new president will be Mario Cognini another executive within the company. On thurs they are calling together a meeting to decide if we are going to get a green light for a new major training facility.

And with notoriously slow Florentine construction policies I don’t see the red tape clearing any time soon.

For the love of god they started building the TramVia (a new public transportation system) in Da Vinci’s time…and every time I pass by it, I see two interchangable guys “working” one is smoking, and the other one is having coffee.

    Alessio, I’m from Long Island.

And this uncertainty about club management does not sound good to me. I can’t see Prandelli sticking around if things are shuffled.

I had to laugh when I heard Mike R’s description of the work being done on the TramVia project. It reminded me of my impression of the Sagrada Familia “project” in Barca. There were about 20 construction workers lounging around, smoking, looking at girls. No wonder it’s not done! Holy siesta, Batman.

I was holding out hope that Ricky Monty, with all of his promise, would develope into our Iniesta or Xavi, but I’ve stopped hoping. Geez. On my fuzzy stream, I couldn’t really tell who was who, I only had to rely on the announcer to ID players (as well as their positions on the pitch). I wondered aloud about 40 minutes in – is Monty playing?

The Roma shellacking is one loss, and to add more silver to that lining – it was away from the friendly confines. C’mon Mutu, wake up. Prands, put Jo-Jo in for 90. Adiamo, Viola!

I’ve heard so much about our wonderful youth system. Maybe it’s time to start easing the children into Serie A. Given, one loss does not mean that a complete paradigm shift is necessary, but yowza, what a loss. I foresee this summer being a firesale: goodbye old players, hello Primavera. Eff.

Santana yes Pasqual no…well unless Prandelli can stop using Gobbi on the left during CL games…I like Gobbi alot, but defense just isn’t his place

Pasqual is hardly a problem, he’s not exactly a difference maker but you’d be surprised how rare it is to find a fullback who can both cross and defend. He’s been mediocre so far this season but in his defense he can’t play at his best when we have a black hole in the middle of the back line.

In happier news, Matteo Renzi (Florence’s mayor) has given the greenlight for Fiorentina to build their new multimillion euro training facility to be located in the Castello area, right next to the airport. All thats required now is a vote from the city commission and we are good to go.

And Lucca Brazzi, our man in Firenze, will be on hand to make sure the city commissioners vote in our favor. “Beviamo alla nuova facilità!”

Honestly I don’t think we need to knock down the Franchi…just renovate it, modernize it, we are already the first club in Italy to take down the barriers and this week they removed the panes of glass from the visitor’s section.

According to the plan, the facility will have a hotel, restaurants, shops, and the Fiorentina museum.

mike renovation is only gonna delay the inevitable. a new stadium is required because franchi is old, has athletic tracks and you can’t really develop anything around it, like a shopping center for example.

I agree, seen nothing from marchionni, put santana or even jovetic or jorgensen there. I was also against selling semioli, didn’t he set up like every goal against roma at the back end of last season? Any way, he’s gone now, but someone needs to give marchionni a kick up his ass (and one for monto too).

I’m not sure about the rest of you, but I don’t think the 4-2-3-1 works for us. Too few attacking options other that trying to put it into Gila. What about trying a 4-3-3? I think this year our problem has been less with the defense and more with midfield control and offensive anemia. I guess a 4-3-3 deosn’t solve the midfield problem (although it coudl help Montolivo), but maybe a change is in order:

    Commotto – Gamberini – Dainelli – Pasqual
    Montolivo – Donadel – Zanetti
Santana – Gila – Jo Jo

The biggest problem with 4-3-3 is I’m not sure if Vargas would work in it, and he’s probably been our best attacking player outside of maybe Jo Jo so far. Certain players on the team are definitely more suited for 4-3-3 (Monty and Santana especially), while others are more suited for 4-2-3-1. It’s frustrating really.

i had forgotten about him. Okay, then how about this as a front line:

    JoJo – Gila – Vargas.

I don’t understand why Prandelli deosn’t mix it up more, both as to personnel and formations. The problems with our current formation are recurrent.

    Maybe a 4-2-3-1?
    Frey
    Commotto Gamberini Dainelli Pasqual
    Montolivo Donadel Vargas
    Jovetic Santana
    Gilardino

The challenge is to fit Zanetti in somewhere. The only real solution I see is a three man backline, but that opens up a whole different can of worms.
