Viola Two Points Off First Place! Also, The Viola Glossary

By: Ted | September 26th, 2009

Give me a break. I’ve been writing this blog for almost three years now, and we’ve never been this close to first after this many games. So I decided to have a little fun with the title of the post. Yes, I am writing it on Saturday night and the Sunday games haven’t played yet. So what. Give me my little bit of fun.

After watching the New England Revolution beat the Seattle Sounders at scenic Gillette Stadium, I came home and watched our beloved Fiorentina take three points off a feisty Livorno squad on the road. The match wasn’t pretty, and featured only one goal, shot by the kid I was devoted to ages before it became fashionable, but a win is a win. As I said in a post earlier this season, we are now winning these grim games that we used to draw and lose, the games where we are not at our best but are the games that very good teams always seem to win. Hmmm…..

Today was truly pretty grim. We pretty much started a B-squad as the club looks forward to their big mid-week match with Red-Everton, and Livorno controlled much of the possession, especially in the first half. But we won a penalty, My Precious converted, and thus I get to go to bed happy. So all is well in my word.

———————————————–

Also, Italy Offside enthusiasts will note that over at the Newcastle boards, Newcastle blogger Alessio has put together a glossary of Italian terms used in football. It’s very helpful for the beginner (and even the expert) and I recommend it to everybody. Allessio is a frequent contributor to our discussion boards as well. In short, he is a Newcastle guy, but I like him anyway.

Regardless, I thought I would help out readers of THIS blog by defining a few terms we use around here. They aren’t really technical terms, and they are not Italian in origin either. All right, they are just some bullshit jokes I use once in a while. At least now everyone will know what the hell I’m talking about:

Bassy: Affectionate nickname given to Viola netminder and resident genius Sebastian Frey, who not only should be the starting ā€˜keeper for France, but who also should be awarded the Nobel Prize for Keeping Balls out of the Net.
Beckham, David: The only human being ever to be rated higher on the ā€œDuche Scaleā€ than the Duche himself. This was once considered a scientific impossibility.
Beckhams, The: The name of the team that plays in Milan and wears black-and-red stripes. Team is named after their greatest-ever player.
ā€œBest Player in the World with a Nine-Year-Old Girl’s Haircutā€: This is how I used to describe Ricky Montolivo. Formerly an affectionate nickname. Now I sometimes think that there are nine-year old girls who are better than him.
Beautiful Florence: Self explanatory. How I always describe the most gorgeous city in the world.
Duche, The: Despicable Beckham midfielder Rino Gattuso, who once mocked the Gila Monster for no reason. One a scale of one to ten on the ā€œDouche Scaleā€, he is a 37.
Gila Monster: forward Alberto Gilardino, a monster who, instead of killing children, scores goals.
Great Man, The: Coach Prandelli, described for all of his attributes both personal and professional.
My Precious: Affectionate (perhaps too affectionate) nickname I gave to Viola midfielder Steven Jovetic after he played about ten minutes in the purple shirt. My affection for him is likened to Gollum’s for the One Ring. I was once mocked for my love of all things Jovetic, but I am now generally acknowledged as a far-sighted genius. At least in my own mind.
Lazio Practice Squad: How I once described the ā€œotherā€ team in Rome, the one that wears the red-orange shirts. Set off a serious of angry emails to me from angry unemployed Roma fans that live in their mom’s basement.
Newcastle United: A filthy group of criminals who style themselves a football team. They play in the otherwise pretty city of Turin and wear black-and-white stripes. Named after a much more impressive organization that plies their trade in the fine City of Newcastle in England.

Anyway, that’s all I can think of for my glossary now. If I forgot any obvious ones, just leave them in the comments sections. Everyone relax for a few days. We all need to be at full strength for Red-Everton. (Ohh! I’ll have to add that one soon!)

Forza Viola!

Brett…you’re talking about a man who used his post loss press conference, to propose to his girlfriend after getting knocked out of the Euro cup (and was hilariously rejected)

To get back to the formation issue, and I realize I am saying this out of too much sympathy for Montolivo, why don’t we try him on the right in a 4-2-3-1 in the position typically handled by Marchionni? That keeps Donadel and Zanetti in the defensive positions, and gives Montolivo a little more chance for some creativity. We wouldn’t miss much sitting Marchionni and Santana on occassion, and it might be what Monto needs to find himself. It is sad watching him. He is a shell of even what he was last year. You can see how tentative he is with his sad little passes and easy losses of the ball. I’d hate to see this continue.

Prandelli and Frey kicked off the “Run for Life” marathon in Florence today (basically a runathon for cancer) and Frey was interviewed: “Fiorentina is a big team among champions, we were great in Livorno and won against a strong team. In Florence I am very happy not just for the team but for the city. When you feel such a strong bond with the city its nearly impossible to leave. I couldn’t imagine myself happier anywhere else.”

good words from frey. we NEED him if we are going to do anything. i can’t imagine life without him.

Nick that seems like a good idea. but the question that comes to mind is how is his crossing ability? i know i’ve seen he provide some decent balls from the back flanks, eg. gila monsters second goal in the 4-1 Roma game last season.

I like De Silvestri’s upside. He’s athletic, strong, and showed some crossing ability. Sure he was shaky on some defensive possesions, but it’s already been mentioned its hard to be too critical of that given his unfamiliarity with his new mates and he hasn’t played a compbetitive 90 in like, a year? Don’t correct me, I don’t know how long it’s been, but it’s been a while. I was suprised he played the whole game.

We got totally lucky on that Dainelli yellow card. It should have been a penalty. We often complain that we don’t get the calls against the big clubs, but we were the big club that got the call against a small club in this instance. Maybe it all comes out in the wash (Gila was brought down earlier in the box without a call), but a bit of luck is nice.

On Montolivo’s pass to Marchionni, part of Marchionni’s job is to know where the opposing players are, and not just stand there to get poached. The problem is that he wasn’t in his stride, that he was too far from his support. In an earlier game, Marchionni showed up Montolivo in public, and I didn’t think it was Monto’s fault. So far I don’t like what I’ve seen of Marchionni’s attitude.

On 3 vs 4 central defenders, part of the problem is that our central pair need reinforcing, which Melo did a solid job of last year. This season we miss that, so we should make a virtue of necessity and just play three at the back. Pasqual, Gamberini, Dainelli.

On De Silvestri, I’m perhaps impatient, but he looked really fearsome going forward, and out of his depth in defence. I think he’d be better used in a more attacking role, and the 3-5-2 with him as one of the 5 could release him to play more attacking runs. Perhaps what I’m talking about is an attacking 5-3-2, with wingbacks rather than fullbacks. Vargas could play a little deeper, De Silvestri a little more forward, and Marchionni could sit on the bench.

that article sums up my opinions, and the author argues at the end that it is not aggressive enough for the top teams.

on prandelli’s 100th win: i like the ratio of 1.77 points per game. i found it interesting to go through recent serie a seasons to see how many points were necessary for 4th. 67 points per season was sometimes good enough for 3rd, and sometimes only good enough for 6th.

I hate the 3-5-2. Worst formation in soccer. It has a funny way of turning into an 8-0-2.

Quite frankly, if we ever get Mutu 100% healthy, I’d like to see a 4-3-1-2 with Vargas moved back to left fullback, Donadel as the d-mid covering for Zanetti and Montolivo, and Jovetic in support of Mutu and Gilardino. But I’m not sure we have a second striker to pair with Gilardino unless it’s Mutu.

OMG. Vargas at LB? Too many heart attacks from last year. Keep him up front. The difference between him at the start of the 08-09 campaign and at the end (and this season) is all about getting him on the wing.

3-5-2 or even 3-4-3 (think Cruyff’s dream team) CAN work, but more often than not like Jeff said it turns into 8-0-2. While Vargas and De Silverstri have the wingback skills that could translate to the midfield nicely, in order to actually be aggressive with a 3 man backline it helps to have pacey defenders, something we don’t exactly have a surplus of.

Also typical Melo, the man talks a good talk but something tells me he’s not the nice guy he pretends to be in the locker room, which could explain a lot about his playing style.

Nick, my one response to that would be that if we still have Comotto playing RB at this point, we essentially have 3 CBs on the pitch anyway. But you’re right. Vargas is a serious concern when played at LB.

i think jeff’s 4-3-1-2 is a better option when we need a big offensive push than what prandelli did last year against genoa. when we finished that game, we were playing a 2-4-4
