Viola Win, and News and Notes

By: Ted | November 10th, 2008

Yesterday in beautiful Florence the Viola defeated Atalanta 2-1, keeping pace with most of the big boys in this year’s highly competitive edition of Series A.

I was up early and ready to watch the game, but never saw the match. It was not televised here in the states and it seemed impossible to find a decent stream. I ended up watching Inter on RAI, where at least they cut away to show each of the goals in the Fiorentina match. I was nervous after Atalanta pulled one back in the final minutes, but kudos to the boys for getting three points when they needed to. I don’t want to say too much about the match, having not seen it and all, but by all accounts the team played well and looked solid from back to front. Felipe Melo had a sweet run which led to the first goal, and the young man who is now Officially My Favorite Fiorentina Player (see picture, and not the fat guy on the right) crossed the ball nicely after a sneaky run to Gila, who got the second to continue his absurd scoring spree. (Could Gila get 25 in all competitions this year? Do I hear 30?)

Here are a few other thoughts from the weekend:

• Has this been the most crazily competitive year in Series A recent memory, or what? At the begin of the season I thought that if one of the big four (out of Inter, Milan, Roma, and Juve) slipped up, we would get a CL spot, just as we did last year. Now it seems as if there are ten or eleven teams that could wind up in the top four. It’s worrisome as a Viola fan but great as a follower of Italian football. And beats the shit out of the same top four in the Premiership year in, year out.

• Speaking of which, we have another (theoretically) winnable match next weekend vs. Cagliari, but chase it with a very frightening match vs. Udinese. I don’t like the looks of that one right now, even after their recent tough loss to Inter.

• Interesting article here on how Bassy Frey continues to be pissed about not being picked for the French national team. And he’s right, of course. Is there a bigger inexplicable omission in any national team anywhere than Frey not being a part of the French set-up? Baffling, at least until you remember who is running the French camp.

Speaking of Bassy, I did not know he was a practicing Buddhist, and that he was turned onto it by the great Roberto Baggio. Huh.

• As I said earlier, Steven Jovetic is my new favorite football in the world. And yes, I did bite the bullet and order the shirt. But Christ, Steven, take it easy with comments like this. I hope he was smiling when he said it.

• This last link makes me very, very nervous. The Great Man says it is “difficult” to coach in Florence. Shit. Other than the health of my family, my biggest worry is probably Prands leaving Fiorentina. Please stop saying stuff like this, my hero.

Okay, that’s it for now. I hope you are all good and had a fun weekend, which you presumably did after the win. I will be back soon with more Viola news. And hopefully a bit more good news, as this Prandelli stuff is giving me a stomach-ache.

I didn’t see the match, but this short report states that Jovetic’s work was both good and bad. It sounds like he was dangerous, and created an opportunity or two, but his finishing was “woeful.”

    Agree, disagree?

It takes someone as young looking as Jovetic to make me feel old….and I’m 21.

Looks like Pazzini is on his way out…I’m sad about this but it’s understandable, as right now he is behind Gila, Mutu, Jovetic, and Osvaldo in my mind. It’s a little worrying how we only have one real finisher right now, calling Osvaldo “inconsistent” is an understatement and Jovetic’s best asset isn’t his poaching skill either.

ahh. there’s tons of transfer talk, most of it probably out of the reporters butts.

the only rumor i saw that i believed was la viola tearing up almiron’s contract and shipping him back to juve.

that makes sense. none of the rest does so i don’t belive it.

Nolan I see Osvaldo under Pazzini in the pecking order…if one striker is leaving this january its going to be him. Give Jovetic time, remember hes only 19 and playing for his first (and hopefully only) major club, you have to give him seasons to develop, he put up a great assist for Gila on sunday and his finishing will grow in time.

Don’t slakas….we’re sick of trying to find teams that can meet his wage demands. We can cross off Monaco and Fiorentina from the list now..

    better quote for ted’s stomach:
The Viola have been playing some excellent football this season and every game at the Artemio Franchi has attracted sell-out crowds this term.

The Tuscan side want to emulate their brilliant run last season where they were given an extra push by the faithful.

Coach Cesare Prandelli has shown his appreciation to the Tifosi and thanked them for their efforts week-in, week-out.

“The fans are showing that they are great,” Prandelli told Radio Lady.

“They are always balanced with their judgements and they have always been by our side.

“I would like to thank the fans and compliment them for their efforts.

“We are a young group of players. Take Zdravko Kuzmanovic for example, he has great potential but he has to be a little more organised tactically.”

Fiorentina are joint seventh with Genoa, four points behind league leaders Inter.

    news flash lol

Gobbi knows that results away from home have slowed down the Viola’s progress in Serie A, and for this reason he is hoping that things will be different from now on in order to reach their real level.

“We are aware of our strength,” explained the former Cagliari player. “We play good football, but we must improve our performances away from home, where we don’t have the same personality which we show when we play at home.

“It’s the last step which we still have to do. The big teams are not scared of anything and play like they know when they are away from home. We must impose our game also away.”

The Tuscan side will be facing an in-form Cagliari team and it will therefore not be easy to achieve the three points.

“Especially at home, they play well,” continued Gobbi. “It will be tough, but we had an entire week to prepare ourselves and it’s something which happens to us rarely.

“There is nothing we fear in particular about Cagliari. We know them well, and their strengths are the counter attacks and the speed they have in attack.”

San Cesare saying things like that gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside, I won’t deny it.

I have a lot of affection for little Cagliari and their constant battle to avoid relegation, but we really have to win this weekend. Not only do we need the points, but we need the confidence booster before Udinese next weekend. Once again, we’re more than capable of beating them, we just… yeah, that “finishing” thing.

hmmph. ok, so i’m a stat geek, prob cuz i’m also a
degenarate gambler, but on the surface, Cagliari looks like a tough matchup.

Cag has 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses at home, with 8 goals for and 6 against, while la viola are 2, 0 and 3 on the road, 6 for, 7 against. seems to be in cags favor.

but if you go deeper, those 2 wins for cag are against chievo and bologna and they scored 5 of those 8 goals against bologna. against lazio and juve they lost and they tied a milan team that hadnt snapped out of whatever they’ve snapped out of.

I think the opportunity is there, as it was at palermo, and as it was at sienna (grr)

We Want The Three Points At Cagliari – Kuzmanovic

Fiorentina midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic is targeting full points for his side as they visit Cagliari this weekend at the Sant’Elia stadium in the twelfth matchday of Serie A.

Kuzmanovic believes that the Viola are ready for Sunday’s clash against the Rossoblu, even though it will be far from easy.

“This week we had the time to prepare for the away game against Cagliari with a sense of calmness,” explained the Serbian midfielder.

“It will not be an easy game, just like the away game at Palermo. We want to win and we shall try to express our style in the best possible way.”

Kuzmanovic then spoke about himself and his personal objectives.

“I’m fine,” he continued. “When I go on the pitch, I always try to give hundred percent, as I’m a generous player.

“I must still improve in managing myself physically during the ninety minutes and in finding the right position on the pitch. I’m still young and I can still improve.”
