Was Lecce the Shipwreck of our Hopes?

By: Ted | January 11th, 2009

Today in beautiful Florence the Viola were defeated 2-1 by recently promoted Lecce, throwing the remainder of our season in doubt and leaving the club struggling for answers. Among the bad stuff that happened today:

• We got beat by an inferior team in a “must win” game at home and now face three very tough matches coming up.

• Star man Adi Mutu dislocated his elbow and could be out for a month. This is not as bad as many of us feared when we saw the injury live, as many thought he broke his arm and was done for the season. Still, it is never good to lose Adi.

• Freakishly talented keeper Bassy Frey also apparently injured himself, a prospect perhaps even scarier than losing Mutu.

• Also, Bassy grew a full beard, and now looks more grizzled and less weird. I think he looks better in the beard, frankly, but I don’t think it’s a good look for our preternaturally talented goalkeeper, if that makes sense. A grizzly beard like Frey’s belongs on a veteran catcher on a baseball team, someone who hits .250 but gets the crucial RBI when you need them. Frey is more of the eccentric genius and needs a haircut to demonstrate it. Go back to the ‘burns, Bassy!

• Village Idiot Pablo Osvaldo picked up a pointless red in the dying minutes. Not only did this ensure he would miss the game vs. the Beckhams (he would have perhaps started since Mutu is injured) but maybe messes up a potential Pazzini sale because now we need some warm bodies to start in the forward line along with Gila. I’ve been on the fence about this one, but this morning put me firmly in the “sell Osvaldo” camp. As far as I’m concerned, the bicycle kick was a hundred years ago. And get a new headband, moron.

So what about today’s game? In terms of the action on the field, I’m not actually as down about it as some of the gang that watched the match and commented on the boards. (And thanks to everyone who participated, by the way.) Here’s what I saw:

I actually thought Fiorentina played a pretty decent game. Yes, they were caught twice on the trap, and they were harshly punished for it both times. The team was coming back from a longish break and was rusty. But I think any errors today were actually tactical, and thus my beloved hero The Great Man is at least partially to blame. Let me explain.

As everyone knows Monto was out on suspension, so Prands started a defensive-looking midfield of Kuz, Melo, and Donadel. Santana (who played well today but missed another sitter) played deep and could be considered a fourth midfielder, or perhaps could be thought of as playing in the hole. Fine. Prands also started with a strait back four (although Vargas moved forward a LOT, which was a good sign) and Mutu and Gila up top. I thought this lineup was the best he could do with Monto out and certainly expected to have no problems on defense with Melo and Donadel holding.

But I think that Prandelli went into this perhaps a little bit overconfident. Understandably, however, but still overconfident. He needed the win, was playing at home, and was playing a weaker team. So instead of playing Melo and Donadel in the holding role, he played Donadel back there alone and used Melo as another attacking mid, feeding Santana, Kuz, and Mutu (before he went out.) That only left Donadel in a holding role, which would normally be okay, but Prands also had the back four play very, very high. At times it seemed as if the four of them (three when Vargas was marauding around) were almost parked at the midline.

This wasn’t a crazy plan. After all, Fiorentina dominated possession, corners, and shots. But it required timing, panache, and discipline by the back line, and after they gave up the first they had to throw men forward while Lecce could hold players back. The second probably sealed the deal, and we were done. But I at least see where Prandelli was coming from. I guess what I’m saying is that I certainly acknowledge that we were beat today, and hats off to Lecce and all that, but I don’t think the performance on the field is as bad as some thought it was.

But onto the question I asked in the title: was this match the shipwreck of our hopes? Can we now finish in a CL spot? Obviously the next few weeks will tell its tale. We’re down to sixth, sitting behind some very good teams, and have to play for a while without Mutu, maybe without Bassy, and perhaps our transfer plans are all messed up because Osvaldo left his brains in his other pair of pants.

Right now my very qualified answer is “not necessarily.” Even without Adi I think we have a shot to beat the Beckhams next week, even if their club features the single greatest player ever to put on a pair of boots, along with Pato, Kaka, Ronaldinho, and Maldini. After that things get a bit more tricky, but Series A is a tough league. That’s why we love it, and that’s what makes us so damn happy when our beloved Viola succeeds. Even if it didn’t happen today.

Funny hearing someone call using Melo and Donadel at the same time too defensive, Fiorentina fans are probably the only Serie A fans who would have that problem, but that’s what makes La Viola so awesome.

Anyway if this loss motivates us to slay the Beckhams it was a worthy sacrifice, but while I have recovered from my hopeless feeling of yesterday, my expectations remain low.

    hmph.
not sensing a lot of contrite-ness, if that’s the word:
    whaddya mean “IF?”

Today the forward commented on the game with an official statement on his website, feeling that it is necessary to express his thoughts on the game and say sorry to the team’s faithful fans.

“Yesterday was a really bad day. Not only for the team but for me especially. I am really disappointed with what happened on the pitch. I did not realise what the consequences of my actions would have been. I made a mistake with the referee and the fans,” said the striker.

Osvaldo added: “I want to make sure that people understand that I limped off the pitch because I was really hurt in that tackle, and today my ankle is very swollen. This is probably why I lost my cool, but I want to apologise if my actions offended anyone.”

I do think Osvaldo’s heart is in the right place. He’s just an idiot.

“Mutu’s situation could change our plans for the transfer window,” Prandelli told Tuttosport. “If players believe they can stay and work hard to earn a place then they are welcome to remain with us, if not, they can leave.”

For me, I always saw Melo and Donadel as two extra defenders, they always play farther back than other midfielders, whereas Kuz and Montolivo are the ones that run forward. I’m hugely impressed by Comotto who can almost act like a midfielder, he’ll run straight up the left side and deliver balls personally. I just wish Vargas would wake up and do the same thing on the right.

    ugh

ROME (AFP) – Fiorentina are counting the cost of a disastrous match against Lecce at the weekend as captain Adrian Mutu and goalkeeper Sebastien Frey could both miss Saturday’s trip to AC Milan.

Not only did Fiorentina lose 2-1 at home to their lowly rivals on Sunday but Mutu went off with an injured elbow and his replacement Pablo Osvaldo was dismissed late on.

Since then Frey has been diagnosed with damage to a knee that has previously been operated on.

Both he and Mutu are doubtful for the trip to Milan.

La Viola would have gone third had they beaten Lecce but instead find themselves a point off the top four Champions League qualifying positions.

Cristiano Lucarelli? Well, I’m sure he’d bag a few and a big, classical center forward does seem to do well in Prandelli’s system.

For political reasons I have a soft spot for Lucarelli, but that sounds like it would be Vieri part 2. Don’t we need a more well rounded player rather than a target man, considering Mutu is out?

i’m assuming goal.com can at least not f up a quote.

Pazzini has been linked with several clubs in recent weeks and is more likely to head for the exit door, but sporting director Pantaleo Corvino has now revealed that Osvaldo is also eager to leave Florence.

“I can safely say that both Pazzini and Osvaldo have demanded to move on,” the Florentines’ executive told the Corriere dello Sport. “I understand their needs and we will have to carefully assess the situation. However, our position is unchanged and everyone has to know that Fiorentina are not going to sell off their players, we are not giving them away.”

Fiorentina made a disastrous start to 2009 last weekend, as they lost 2-1 to Lecce at home and were leapfrogged by Napoli and Genoa in the standings, but Corvino is adamant that Prandelli has a solid group at his disposal.

“This squad is excellent, we have firm foundations and we can build on this to try and win our third Scudetto,” he stated. “Of course, it is a difficult objective and I do not intend to deceive our supporters, but they have to keep on dreaming, as their dreams give us strength.”

We needed Monto thats all it was. Our attack was too one dimensional with Monto gone and then Mutu injured. All we did was bring it up the flanks and cross it in, which is not really a problem, unless it is the ONLY way you attack. Lecce were happy to sit back, soak up the pressure and clear out the long crosses to the badly outnumbered Viola forwards. With Monto and Mutu we have the ability to vary play, through balls, mazy runs and one touch passing.
I was dissappointed in the defence as well, if you want to play high and play the offside trap thats fine, but it seemed as if it was the first time La Viola defence had heard the word offside. They seemed terribly out of place.
Even Frey, who I wouldn’t blame for either goal, didn’t pull off his usual incredible show stopping, game winning saves, and hes the best goalie in the world when it comes to one-on-ones, the Lecce strikers did amazing to take their time, show patience and chip it over Freys head.

Also, Melo misses a free header, and then Semioli misses an empty net.

    What a nightmare

Actually I was shocked that Frey was so far out when they were on the counter attack, he isn’t one to let attackers run over him like that.

This game reminded me very much of Fiorentina-Udinese from last season. They scored first on counter attack, then Pazzini equalized with a header, and then another counter attack and they scored again.

Ted, I think your analysis is great, but I think the greatest problem is the offensive approach that anthony mentions. I feel like I have seen far too many games where la Viola’s offense is totally one-dimensional — endless, ceaseless, repetitive crosses from teh wings that 80 perent of the time get cleared with ease. I guess it was made worse by the fact that Lecce was playing with like 111 guys packed in back, but I saw almost zero creativity out there — not from Jovetic, Osvaldo, Kuz or Santana. We need a guys who is multi-dimensional and dangerous with the ball, and that is what seems to be lacking. Instead the system we employ is as if big 6′4″ Luca Toni was out there. Comments?

    Hot off the press….

We have sold Pazzini to Sampdoria. Sampdoria loans us Bonazzoli (who I really like and is tailored made for the 4-3-3, imho) and we have an option to purchase him.

–And I never thought Ujfalusi was very fundamental for us accepting his role as a leader, perhaps, and his ability to cover as a CB. Comotto is a better RB.

How many matches did Mutu miss last year? It seemed like a lot, but maybe is seemed worse than it actually was because whenever he was out they couldn’t score.
