We Are Like Unconquerable Road Warriors, Only the Exact Opposite
By: Ted | November 30th, 2008
What does it mean when your team can’t win (or even draw) on the road?
Does it mean they’re no good? Maybe, but they look like a pretty good team when they are playing at home.
Does it mean they have no heart? Maybe, but they’ve showed heart plenty of times in the past.
Does it mean that they’re just too young a club? Maybe, and they do have a lot of kids on the team, but they also have a lot of older veterans who have been around the block. Those guys should be able to lead the kids through hostile conditions on the road.
Does it mean they need “home cookin” to play well? Maybe, but the food in Siena is pretty close to the food in Florence, and they can’t win there either.
Does it mean their defense needs to improve? Maybe, but Frey was God-like today, and Gamberini was my man of the match.
So it must be the boys up front then? Maybe, but they sure looked good last week putting four past Udinese.
So what the hell is wrong with the club? I sure the hell don’t know.
Look, today is nothing to really panic over. We lost 1-0 to a hot, good team in a match that some commentators are calling the game of the year in Series A. No shame in losing to Roma in Rome. But this monkey on our back that is the road needs to be figured out and pronto, by the Great Man, or by the players, or by Corvino, or whomever. The Viola are starting to give off the stench of a seventh or eighth place team, and I don’t like it one bit. We are better than this and should be contending for a CL spot, but it means we have to beat some good teams, and it means we occasionally have to get a point or three away from Beautiful Florence.
Other quick thoughts from the match…
• What do you think Frey is thinking as he makes one highlight-reel save after another, only to lose 1-0 for what must seem like (to him) to be the thousandth time? “Gee that Milan shirt would feel real good right now. Or Bayern. Hell, anyone who can score an occasional goal.” God forbid.
• As I said, Gamberini was the man today. Did a great job of containing Vucinic, who scares me to death, and even had time to help out the always mediocre Per Kroldrup. Good job by him.
• A few impressive moments from Monto, but I need more. If you are going to take the next step, Ricky, to full international and replacement for Pirlo on the national team, you have to get to work soon. We can’t wait forever. Now is as good a time as any. Let’s see it.
• I hate to let my passive-aggressive, love-hate (mostly hate) relationship with Mario Santana continue to play out in these pages, but Christ. He looked pretty good for the first hour and served as a nice connector between midfield and the boys up front. For the millionth time, I thought “maybe I’ve underestimated you, you wily Argentinean.” And then, around the 65th minute (I wasn’t taking notes because I was holding my son) he gets the ball ALONE right outside the box on the right side, with Gila at the penalty spot with space. And Santana PANICS, as usual, and shots the pass a mile in front of Gila where it rolls out harmlessly for a free kick. I screamed and upset my boy, who never understands why I yell at the computer. Anyway, what’s the lesson? Mario is OK playing deep, but he turns into a twelve-year-old boy about to be kissed for the first time whenever he gets near the box. His crossing sucks. His shooting sucks. If asked to make the final pass he’ll blow it. He’s going to make me crazy before the year is out.
To be fair, My Precious Jovetic was promptly subbed in for Santana after Mario’s crap pass, and he didn’t do that much better. But I would rather the kid start over Santana at this point. Or at least play Mario in Midfield so I never have to see Almiron in a purple shirt again. He is back to playing shitty again, too.
Okay, that’s it for me. I’m exhausted. I hope you are all well. I’ll be back mid-week with news and notes on our favorite club.
Forza Viola!

Are you regretting keeping Mutu this summer?
I’m regretting Roma were even linked with him in the first place. Makes me wanna vomit. Or maybe get some drugs. Maybe Adrian can help me with that?Posted from

this away form has to stop.we’re not gonna win(not even challenge)for scudetto with this kind of performance.the potential is there,i know it,all we need is the right(winning)mentality, the mentality of a big club.its like we’re having an inferiority syndrom against big clubs (see bayern, lyon, roma etc, etc).i remember last year we were undefeated for 15 matches, and i actually believed we can challenge for scudetto, then all sorts of things happened, and we settled for 4th place.probably the new summer signings disbalanced the team,i dont know, but i hope our exit from cl will shift our focus to serie a.p.s.:asem,your comments show that you didn’t watch viola play the last two season.adi, for me,is one(if not the best)of the best trequartista playing in serie a,and before you point me to the likes of kaka.ronaldinho, del piero, ibrahimovic etc.(whose quality i dont question),i’d like to remind you that he doesnt play for inter, milan or juventus.there are moments when he’s carrying the team by himself.forza mutu, forza viola!

Haha KJ.
I don’t doubt Mutu’s skill.
Calling him the best Treq in Serie A is a bit extreme.
I just can’t stand him as a person.
Not just the drug charges. He’s a dirty player who is constantly whining, on and off the pitch.
“Roma were scared” – Hardly.Posted from

Can’t you Roma trolls stick to your own board? Brag all you want but we are still in a better position and you can’t expect Totti to bail you out every game if you really want to be any more serious of a contender than we are.

Mutu is one of the best trequartitas in serie A, no doubt.
shame of a result, but tomorrow is a new day. the question is, do you think the uefa cup is worth pursuing/will it screw up your serie a season?

I agree with Dumitru in his opinion on Adrian Mutu. His abilities can be matched with those of Ibrahimovic, Trezeguet, Kaka et al… Last year Mutu (along with Sebastien Frey) carried us into the CL. He doesn’t get the recognition he deserves because of the Chelsea debacle. And in response to Asam’s posts about Mutu as a person, he is actually quite humble; you don’t hear him talk incessantly about how he deserves the Ballon D’or ala Ibrahimovic. He has moved beyond his past drug use so don’t give us that old excuse as to why you don’t like him as a person.

My Precious Jovetic
I am highly disturbed by the degree to which this makes you sound like Gollum.
alessio — frankly, I’d rather we don’t aim for the UEFA Cup and instead give everything we have to Serie A. I think the lack of mid-week games would really help. But unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on whom you ask) we have too much pride to admit that, and we’ll keep fighting for whatever prize we can get.

Actually, I always kind of intended it to be a Gollum joke. Halfway through the season I was going to just start refering to him as “my precious” just to see if anyone noticed. Well done.

possibly more disturbing to know it’s intential
on another note, if one is to believe everything one reads it’s seems the entire viola squad is being sent away on transfers come january.
it’s quite comical

i do think osvaldo, pazzini, papa waigo will leave sooner or later.they are talented players and i dont think they will accept to be benched forever.

Corvino has been quoted as saying a “few” players will leave; he isn’t going to be backing up a truck. And Pazzini’s value will almost certainly be greater in the summer than it is now, especially for teams that are still in Europe.
Add me to the “want the UEFA Cup” crowd. Competing in Europe is important for the “progetto”, for experience and for the budget. Last year’s run demonstrated that, and the fact that we would make it in through the “back door” this time doesn’t really change the dynamic.
Keep in mind that we are talking about a “real” last 32, no bogus group stages, so the disruption of the Serie A campaign is lessened.

i think papa waigo is gone.
I think only one of the pazzini/osvaldo duo is gone, not sure which, I think I’d prefer it to be pazzini
I hope almiron is sent packing
I hope part of one of these deals involves some sort’ve defenseman coming back, but realistically we can’t expect much

Do you crouch on rocks, petting your jersey with his name on it and mumbling “my precious, my precious” under your breath, Ted? I’ll channel my inner Sam and remain disturbed, thanks.
Transfer rumors at this time of year are always amusing, and it’s only increased because we just got knocked out of the CL. I agree with slakas in that I see Papa Wagio leaving this January (I don’t think he’s even seen the pitch in the league this season), and only one of the excess strikers Osvaldo/Pazzini going. I hope it’s Osvaldo who’s gone, because I like Pazzo and Osvi has been annoying me lately. But then, of course, I think maybe it’s better for Pazzo if he leaves, seeing as even an ineffective Gilardino is keeping him on the bench. (Not, mind, that Pazzo’s made much use of his chances when he’s had them.) And I think I agree with everyone when I say I hope we see the last of Almiron’s freakishly bald head.
I don’t suppose there’s a chance we’ll get Ujfalusi back, is there? He’s not that popular at Atletico and we really could use his defensive skill…

Haha sorry for the first trolling comment, guys.
The other post was just my humble feelings, I’m not trying to be incendiary. I’m probably just bitter, though I’m kinda glad we got J. Baptista and I don’t know if that would’ve happened had we landed Mutu.As for the more serious discussion, I’d say Tank the UEFA Cup. It’s not like it’s that great of something to win. And I think you guys can still finish in the Top 4. Milan is already dipping a little bit and I think that is just a sign of things to come. Teams like Udinese and to a great extent, Napoli, in my opinion, cannot sustain the winning ways they showed early on in the season and you can see that already. What is Napoli’s record in the last few games? Not very good as I recall … I think if Fiorentina can just get everything together and build a system around getting Gila better service (horrible service over the weekend), y’all can still finish top 4. Just hoping we can too.
