Where Eagles Dare: Fiorentina-Lazio
By: Mike R | October 28th, 2012
Fiorentina host a high flying Lazio to the Franchi, as Italy sets the clocks back an hour, and Fiorentina attempt to recapture some lost momentum.
After a disappointing turn of events last week in Verona, Fiorentina found themselves on the wrong end of some refereeing decisions. The result was a 1-1 draw in which the viola maintained a steady amount of possession, and a booking spree which saw the boys from Florence missing key defender Roncaglia, and key midfielder Pizarro this week. Luckily, Montellas boys are bouyed by the return of one Alberto Aquilani, who is set to take his first Serie A appearance in purple after a long injury spell.
Lazio have had a rousing time in Serie A this season as their new manager has taken them to third place, one point behind Napoli and continued their positive streak with a narrow win against Milan last week. However their away form has been terribly inconsistent, and was proven this week when they could only manage a 1-1 draw in Greece, in which they were saved by an own goal. They nearly threw the game against Milan last week, being saved blushes only by Milan’s current terrible form.
Montella has finally called up Aquilani who will start from the bench. Savic will replace Roncaglia in defense while Olivera is set to take up Pizarro’s position. Montella has also decided to give Ljajic another chance next to JoJo who will be supported by Cuadrado, Matigo, Pasqual and Borja shoring up Gonzalo and Tomovic covering Viviano.
Petkovic has suprisingly replaced Carrizo with Bizzari in goal, covered by Konko, Biava, Dias, and Lulic who will support Ledesma, Candreva, Hernanes, and Mauri behind a slightly recuperated Klose.

The big story today is Aquliani’s return, however with a functioning midfield and a shored up defense prone to less gaping holes, we can take the three points against a scary, but not undefeatable Lazio.
FORZA VIOLA!!

Oh hell yeah. I missed every minute of it as I was “battening down the hatches” ahead of hurricane Sandy. This is a nice gift to take into the upcoming few days. Can’t wait to see ratings and highlights!

hunker down tomas, we’ll be thinking of you and everyone else on that side of the country.
Football italia agrees with the cards
Lazio went down to 10 men with Cristian Ledesma’s second yellow card for a pointless and very rough foul in midfield.
The Biancocelesti were reduced to nine, as Hernanes was shown a straight red card for scissoring Cuadrado’s ankles with a blatant foul.
they also agree that the lazio goal should’ve stood
Lazio did get the ball in the back of the net on 59 minutes with a wonderful Mauri diving header, but it was flagged offside. Replays showed it was a terrible decision from the linesman, as Juan Cuadrado was keeping him level.

There’s no “controversy” with the red cards. It’s just there to make other legit controversies (PK appeals, incorrect offside calls) sound saucier.
That said, it’s true that if it had come to a 1-1 it’s most likely to be a draw. Less likely, either a win or a loss for the home team, these two being equally probable.
But those red cards were red cards I think.

Comcast added BEin, but there were showing Inter v Bologna. Did you guys see the match on BEin? RAI italia also showed the same match.

i saw the match on beIN sports on Directv live.

lazio are claiming that Ljajic’s goal should’ve been disallowed because Jovetic was offside and screened the goalie.
they are high.
with so much else to complain about they complain about that?

-

Yeah well, if I were an angry Lazio fan I would point my finger at that particular instance.
Petković seems graceful in the statement quoted at Football Italia though?
We gifted them the first half and could not get hold of the game because Fiorentina were very aggressive and pushed high up the field. We were not at 100 per cent.
In the second half we dominated until the decisions went against us. The goal was not offside, clearly. I am told there might also have been a penalty for a Juan Cuadrado handling offence, but I don’t know. There were also some yellow cards that I did not understand. In any case, these are not alibis, as we should’ve done better.
We must not diminish the credit owed to Fiorentina for their performance, as they were much more attacking and deserved the victory. Had it not been for these incidents then they might’ve deserved it even more.

yah, according to firenzeviola, it was more a commentator than the coach who wouldn’t let it go.
I just wish officiating wasn’t a topic every, single week…

-

Absolutely lovely…. Torres has been sent off for diving…. That action is needed. Chelsea down to 9

-

Classy from Petković.

-

and Hernandez scored, his price just went up another 10M.

-

Hernandez scores again… That’s not good!

-

Chicharito wont be coming to florence guys, i doubt alex will let him go and he doesnt wanna leave.even if he did leave he’d stay in the EPL or maybe Spainish…
But a real great game to watch… Really something

-

chelsea-united was a great game… until the referee decided to ruin it by sending off torres and allowing an offside goal.

-

Chelsea-ManU was typical United favoritism… Young dives to get Ivanovic a straight red for last man. Torres dives and gets a red and the offside goal… Apparently this ref has sent off 4 guys in 3 weeks… refereeing is not only bad in Italy

-

i dont think anyone seriously considered hernandez.. he’s way too expensive

-

The Torres call was harsh but lets face it he is too well know for diving and the ref knew. Maybe if he didnt throw himself to the ground so often the call might have gone in his favour. The chicharito goal was offside but he was of the pitch and retreating, i dont know the rules but it would be a. very sharp to spot it and b. very harsh to call, the offside in that instance.
How the refs decisions can throw a game one way its crazy, soon we’ll have the tv ref like in rugby… Then no more decrepincies

-

Ooops. Back then I meant if I were a Lazio fan I wouldn’t use the goal as an alibi. There are others.
I hope the review would be on Viola Nation!
Always vastly better to leave (and start) on a high.

I don’t know what’s going on over at SBnation. we’re all ready to go and yet here we still are…

Checking in from Salzburg! It´s 0 degrees Celsius here and it´s snowing. Glad to see we picked up a big win, albeit under some controversy. I am excited to see that both Ljajic and Toni got goals, and that Aquilani picked up another assist!

-

roma v udi and napoli v chievo scoreless thru 15.
review is up

Anyone else remember when Serie A seemed to have some of the best refs in the world? Don’t know where they’re getting these jokers but it’s a peninsula wide problem. No ref is going to be perfect but it’s absurd the level of mistakes being made this far into the season.
