Why Can’t We Be Friends?
By: Gianni | September 25th, 2007A match featuring Fiorentina and Roma is always a special one. Not just because they’re both great teams, more often than not aspiring to a top-4 finish (05-06, anyone? Towards the end there was a hatred between the two fanbases to rival a Brasil-Argentina WC final). The main reason is that these teams for most of their history have never been immensely rich, not nearly enough to rival le Milanesi, Juve, Real, London+Manchester, etc., anyway. Yet these teams have always stuck it out, and have always been two of Italy’s greatest teams. Recent history is direct proof of that: we all remember Fiorentina’s bankruptcy, forcing them to crawl back to top-flight football from serie C2.
Roma, instead, suffered a devastating year shortly after their scudetto win and excellent league finishes due to economic struggles and terribly bad luck with coaches (I lost count of how many coaches they went through that year at 7).
Today, these teams are in second and first place, respectively. Both are playing a beautiful, fast, offensive style of soccer, which just seems to stick up a middle finger at Italy’s and Italian teams’, stereotypical catenaccio tactics.
Yes, tomorrow will be an intense game; in all probability a dozen fans will have to be hospitalized before the first whistle is first blown. But this game shouldn’t be a bitter one: it should be a reminder, a celebration, of what a great team really is. Either way it goes, there is always going to be one sure winner, and that is the game of soccer.
Kuffour and Toni showed us love can exist amidst the most strained of situations, let us follow their beautiful example.
That said, let’s send them back to Rome licking their wounds.

The Previews
Okay, unless you’ve been living in a cave the past two days, or in America, you should know:
1.) Mutu declared “Totti is good, but I am better”.
Adrian. Adrian, Adrian, Adrian. What the hell is the matter with you? Dont you understand? It doesn’t matter who you are, how good you are, you just don’t say these things about Francesco Totti. I’d rant on about the pissed-off-proud-roman-looking-for-revenge factor, but…
2.) Totti isn’t playing due to a thigh injury. pheew. I think this is more of a prevention type of thing, with a disgusting schedule coming up for Roma, but either way we should take advantage of his absence.
Right, so Mirko Vucinic is playing in his spot. While you might be breathing a great big sigh of relief, remember this kid scored 19 goals at age 22. I do, however, expect a bit less creativity coming from the lone striker position. As for the actual goal-netting, Mirko shouldn’t be far off from Totti…he’s more of a center-forward than Roma’s golden boy is.
Let’s not forget about Perrotta, though. He’s missing too! Well, based on his recent attempts to *push* in a ready-made goal, and his miserable failure to do so, I’m actually wondering if this really is such a good thing…
Ok ok, jokes apart, Simone is one of the key elements of this Roma team, but Giuly has been doing all he can to make Perrotta’s absences barely noticeable, missed sitters and all.
Honestly, I think Spalletti should line up his players in front of an open goal, tell them to keep on shooting till he says so, and come back in a week or so.
You know that defensive mid we were supposed to get this summer? Well, he would have come in really useful tomorrow. Stopping Roma’s midfielders/wingers/semi-strikers in their tracks is a key element to winning this game, and it’s going to be a really tough task. Luckily, the best defense is a good offense…right?
If Montolivo finds a way around De Rossi/Aquilani, Mutu does his thing, and Pazzini pulls a Toni or two (no pressure there, buddy), we could really have a gol-fiesta coming our way.
But, on the other hand, the players could be too damn tired to even drag themselves out of the locker-room, I don’t know…I’ll compromise.
Final score: 1-1 (Ujfalusi 47, Vucinic 73)
Man of the Match: Fabio Liverani
Hey, I’d love to be in first place, but I have a feeling the teams will be content with a tie by the time it’s midway through the second half.
P.S. For the preview from Roma’s point of view, check out Chris’s always great Roma blog.

“Honestly, I think Spalletti should line up his players in front of an open goal, tell them to keep on shooting till he says so, and come back in a week or so.”
Amen, amen, amen…100x amen.
The saddest thing about it is this should be one of the most exciting games of the entire Serie A season, but both teams will be walking out of the locker room with IVs on poles and a couple guys on gurneys. Computer scheduling has got to go.

Definitely. Only in Lega Calcio can a promoted team that has single-handedly caused the greatest scandal(s) in Italian soccer have an easier schedule than the top, not to mention fair, teams.
There’s more integrity to be found in Las Vegas.

What makes Fiorentina any different than Juve? Fiorentina was initially relegated to Serie B but got their sentence lightened and they were also kicked out of the CL. If a big deal was made about Juve being cheaters, I think that we should be fair and treat Fiorentina equally

Sarrah, I understand where you’re coming from, but the thing is that you really have to be in Italy, be a Serie A fan for years before you truly understand what Juve was (is?).
Just about every team at one point or another has tried to get in the referees’ good books, or made deals with other teams, etc. (The rolexes Sensi gave to the refs a while back, Milan’s doping scandal…) but Juventus is synonymous to cheating in Serie A. You have no idea how many close championships suddenly veered in favor of Juve following a string of ridiculous calls, opponents’ goals annulled because of nonexistent offsides, multiple soft penalties for Juve, etc.
During Calciopoli, Juve was the mastermind of the operation. Some other teams merely tried to ride on the wave. I’m not saying that’s ok to do, but any other team’s wrongdoings are like comparing shoplifting to murder. They’re both wrong, but which should you get life in prison for?

Everybody brings up the refereeing, which was a big deal, but too many people forget or fail to realize what Juventus & Moggi did with the transfer market and agents put all of Lega Calcio back, not just the team’s they were playing on any given day.
What Juventus did was so much worse than Milan, Fiorentina, and Lazio. They rigged a league.
I’m still disgusted they’re in Serie A. Seeing transcripts of Moggi’s phone calls regarding transfers makes me sick.

to hell with Juve!!!!
this is going to be a very tough game but I think that Roma’s stonger bench could get us the winner, but I still expect a draw

“Juventus rigged a league” Chris & Gianni that year Juventus had 5 Italian Internationals apart of the 2006 World Cup (before Calciopoli). With arguably Buffon and Cannavaro being the two best World Cup performers in the whole tournament. We never had to buy had to buy the league to win it, Inter is still trying.

Gianni, I’ve been really impressed with Semioli — would Santana be preferred for tactical reasons, or has he been super-useful in matches I’ve missed?

That’s a good question Martha. I see Semiloi as a little bit more industrious on the pitch, he gets up and down a bit better and plays a tad more defense (though neither of those two are particularly useful on the defensive end).
Santana is capable of moments of brilliant technical play - like the move he pulled on Oddo (I believe) to set up his cross to Mutu for the equalizer in Milan.
Prandelli seems to prefer to play both of them on the right, though they do often switch sides for a few minutes with Mutu. Regardless, if Santana starts, I’d seriously doubt we’d see him for the whole game as he is still not at 100% of his fitness.

Being a die hard romanista and one the insane regulars over at Chris’ blog (even though my name isn’t Marco and i’m NOT from Montreal - about half of Chris’ demographic) I had to read your views on the game. And I liked your game preview… it should be a great great match tonight!

Fiorentina got screwed by Juventus. Della Valle was causing an uproar and wanted changes in Serie A but Moggi told him to play along or Fiorentina will be sent back down. It was obviously wrong for him to fix matches at the end of the schedule but how many games did they lose that season because Moggi wanted to quiet Della Valle? That is why we don’t hate Fiorentina as much as Juventus. Also, we pretend that Juventus just started cheating over the last few seasons which is not the case. It also didn’t start with Moggi. He took it to a new level but the Agnelli family were giving jobs and cars to referees for decades prior to Moggi’s arrival. The club’s history is tainted by cheating.
Actually I am going to rescind my statement about Della Valle. The fucker was fixing Serie C and Serie B games to get back up to Serie A. He only wanted changes because he was no longer the big fish. Fuck Fiorentina!

Good game, good game, I liked that. 2-2 was seriously the best result possible. The tackle on Vieri that caused the penalty wasn’t necessary but a Roma win would not have reflected the way the game went.
MarcoMtl, did you seriously completely change your mind about your opinion on a team and the biggest scandal in Italian soccer over the course of writing two paragraphs?
You crazy Roma fans…
It’s not hard to win Serie C and B when you’ve got a team that could compete for a UEFA Cup spot in Serie A as Fiorentina could. I’m not saying Fiorentina was clean, but it’s obvious who the real culprits were and have always been. Every team’s done something to stack the cards in their favor at one point or another (Roma Rolexes to refs), but Juve is on a whole different planet.

When I say best result, I actually meant fairest result based on how the game went, by the way.

Ya.. fair result.. Up until minute 65 I thought Fiorentina deserved to win this by a couple goal margin (even though we were up) but then the game swung the other way. It’s funny how 3 of the goals (or maybe all) were scored against the run of play. Good game! Hugs all around.. I’m not bitter about this draw because it was a fair one (unlike that pathetic throw in decision)..
Sebastian Frey is absolutely, unbelievably, inexplicably fantastic!! Best player on Fiorentina hands down.. All this talk about Mutu but Frey is just much better..

How is Frey not starting for France???
Fiorentina must be mentioned in the top teams…I’m sick of hearing Lazio…Who else loves vieri off the benchPosted from

Btalk: I do! hehe.
Frey is doubtlessly one of the top 5 goalies in the world. Doni is good, if somebody ties him to the goal posts; on a corner kick there needs to be a defibrillator close at hand for Roma fans.
Domenech is a fucking drool monkey. That’s why Frey isn’t the undisputed starter for France. This is the same guy that calls guys up based on the position of celestial bodies. But yeah, he’s one of those goalies that truly make the difference in a game, a’ la Buffon.
